After the feelings of euphoria had subsided a little when the hated Wall was demolished, it was discovered that a lot of work had to be done to make Berlin an undivided city again. Work has now been going on for more than 10 years on the S Bahn, its own city railway.

The railway, which was almost the cause of a war between the French and the Germans. Part of this rail route through the Luxembourg and Belgian Ardennes was an important connection for industry. Now it is a future connection for the high-speed line.

After years of hard work, the new fixed cross-river connection over the Oresund between Denmark and Sweden opened in 2000. This 16-kilometer combination of tunnel and bridge gives road and train traffic the opportunity to cross this busy strait.

The Tauern lift. From Salzburg, the train travels through the Gastein Valley to the Tauern Tunnel, a climb of more than 600 meters through narrow valleys, through tunnels and over viaducts. After the 8 km long tunnel, the line descends until it reaches Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia, on the banks of the Wörther See.
