It annoys me so that the Riverdale writers still haven't, ten episodes into the season, twigged to the fact that K.J. Apa simply isn't capable of portraying the unfinished, vulnerable, earnest oaf they seem to want Archie Andrews to be. It's a weakness, if not at the centre of the show, then at least prominently to the side. Apa was only three years older than the 17 year-old he's portraying when this season was filmed, but he looks and handles himself as a full-grown man, which, again, isn't the character the writers are putting on the page (regardless of the over-the-summer growth spurt commented on in the pilot). Archie, as written, can't help but make the thickheaded, rash decisions of a child, which would have been so much less frustrating to watch if Apa could tap into that oh, so recognisable juvenile obliviousness. I'm not supposed to look down on Archie; his callowness is meant to make me ache with sympathy and pit, to make me ruefully shake my head. Instead, he's just... annoying.
It also doesn't help that Apa doesn't seem to have the experience to be able to transcend the barrier of acting in an accent not his own*, making for a layer of distance that makes his performance even more of a sore thumb. The weird thing is, the rest of the show is spectacularly well cast. There are no other characters or actors out of which the writers or the editors are struggling to get a tune. Which makes it a mystery why such a misstep even managed to happen. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Apa is able to grow with the task as the show goes on, and that the producers, directors and writers discover how best to help him (and Archie) get there.
The ending was a surprise, I don't see how Archie's mother will fit in the plot and what would she add to the series! But nice to see her I guess! :)
This reminds me so much of how a long-time friend of mine threw a surprise birthday for me earlier this year in May, and I rarely get to do birthday parties. Now I wish I had seen this show and especially this episode the night it aired just so I could refer to this episode. It's also strange but cool how alike I am to this Jughead character, being the "lone-wolf" he is. I liked how he kissed her boo-boo; I thought to do the same just before he did it too, which was a sweet thing to see.
I thought this was going to be the finale, but nope, 13 more episodes.
No wonder nothing has happened so far. They took characters we love, put a murder mystery spin on it, and totally ignored the murder mystery. I don't even care who murdered Jason Blossom anymore. They all deserve to be murdered because they're all assholes. Why has no one punched Cheryl in the face yet? Why is no one shaming Chuck? Why is Betty trying to be perfect when she's not? So what if she has a "dark" side? Just embrace it and move on. I don't even know what's going on with Archie. Veronica, I like. Jughead I can relate to. Betty's mom is annoying af. She seriously has nothing better to do, it's sad.
If nothing happens next episode, I'm dropping this show. They made Archie Comics unnecessarily dark and did a poor job doing so.
Just when I think this show can't get any more ridiculous, it goes and outdoes itself.
Also, am I the only one who thinks Archie's mom looks a hell of a lot like Cheryl? So crazy.
I think this was possibly the worst episode and did absolutely nothing to further the plot line at all. I kind of feel bad that the actors had to endure this...
Why the hell would Jughead's father stick around a teenager party? Like, yeah, it was originally supposed to be his son's birthday party. But it clearly had devolved into not being that, and Jughead himself claimed no ownership over the party. Any sane adult would leave right then and there. Instead, he stuck around like a weirdo creep.
I can't decide whether Jughead looks good or weird without his hat on. He certainly looks much older.

Is Betty wearing Jugheads sweater? If not, then where would she get a sweater made so fast with her boyfriend's logo on it? Lol speaking of Jughead, woah, did you see that, Jughead actually had his hat off! Lol Of course everyone should have known that Archie was going to kiss Veronica with the way they were on the couch and of course because Archie seems to have to kiss a majority of every young female he's in contact with. He doesn't seem to like any girl much as he ends up kissing another girl within what appears to be only 1-3 days after the last girl or in some cases while he is with someone else. Why did everyone at the party listen to Cheryl when she locked the door? I would have told them both to fuck off and threw them both out! They weren't invited, and broke in, plus irritating, toss them out!
