Sharp Objects 2018

Three episodes in and what do we know about this show? She eats next to nothing, drinks vodka like there's no tomorrow yet manages to stay more sober than a teetotaler. Oh and something to do with murder of a girl or two.

you don't usually get to see three female characters so three dimensional and well acted in tv or movies. you can feel the pain in camille, the sorrow in adora and the angst in amma. you can understand what they do, even when you don't agree, you just say to yourself "okay she's doing what she's gotta do"

i really like character driven content (the leftovers is my favorite tv show ever), so i think this show is a must! also, the plot makes you want for more. it has a great soundtrack and directing (same from big little lies, which is as magnificent as sharp objects). amy adams is superb and i hope she get some awards. the rest of the cast is great as well, but amy adams is amy adams right :))

update: i was really surprised by the end. loved every second of the show!!

This looks promising! The cinematography seems impecable. Plus, we finally get to see another Gillian Flynn novel come to life.

Very dark with great visuals and soundtrack. A little slow and little long but I was not bored which says a lot considering it’s character driven with no action. Loved the roller skating shots. My honey wonders how the hell Camille carved messages on her own back… Personally, I also had trouble believing Camille would go back and let herself get poisoned knowing it was going to happen. I could understand perhaps it was a way for her to commit suicide but would’nt she want to save Amma? Camille was smartish and carrying so that did not make sense to me…

Thematically interesting and brilliantly acted, but painfully slow and far too long

Feminine in design rather than inherently feminist, the show is a portrait of tainted motherhood and corrupted sisterhood, and is best categorised as a piece of Southern Gothic horror/melodrama, half Erskine Caldwell and half Tennessee Williams, garnished with a dash of Harry Crews. More concerned with internecine inter-generational conflict, matrilineal dysfunction, and how the rotten core of small-town America can breed not just old-fashioned sexism and bigotry, but festering cyclical violence, the main focus is not on major plot points or momentous reveals, but on how the past bleeds into the present and how difficult it can be to escape from past trauma. But whilst the acting is exceptional, and the show is well directed and edited, much like the first season of Big Little Lies (also a HBO series with a female-centric point-of-view based on a novel that isn't really about the murder at its centre), it left me utterly unengaged, completely uninterested in any of the characters, and fighting interminable boredom for much of its eight hours.

Too slow. Too pretentious. Too boring. Thank god, it was 8 episodes. The show builds upto some grand supernatural plot. The ending was stupid. It's not the mother going around killing little girls because she is crazy but her sister because she wants attention. Okay. It's just a tv show. Let's move on. But how tf was her sister able to kill those girls without leaving evidences? How did she manage to put a dead body in the middle of the town without getting any attention. I loved Gillian Flynn for Gone girl, but this story wasn't any good.

I ended up looking up the ending to this show because I could not get through the episodes. I can usually handle slow burns if there is a mystery involved, but I could not with this one. The first episode catches you, but then every episode after that is so slow, I could barely stay awake. I’m a little mad that I looked up the ending, because the plot twist was good, but I should’ve just read the book.

this show is absolutely boring

How they can make a boring show like this!
like 6 episodes was just, let's go to bar, then okay let's go with the car around this crazy shitty town
and still nothing
they could make great thing but instead of that they made shit
I'm giving it 7 bc i liked the acting, But the story?
fuck it for real

Wonderful acting, a good production, but too boring: a criminal soap opera, I could not stand 2 episodes, it seems this must be a 3 or four episodes mini-series.

loading replies

It was a slow beginning...but then I could not stop watching it. A very good piece.

It's 6AM, the sun is coming up and I'm just in a state of shock after binging the entire series.
This was the bleakest, darkest and most beautiful thing I've seen since the first season of True Detective.
If Adams doesn't get an Emmy for this then there truly is no justice in the world.

Wow! This show was MIND BLOWING!
The finale left me in goosebumps. I'm not going to spoil it but there are many articles that do spoil it but also explains the ending.
I haven't read the book but will soon. The show has done justice to the book and why not, the author Gillian Flynn was 100% in on it.
This show is perfect. For mystery lovers.
Amy Adams was the right choice for the role. I don't think anyone else would have done justice to the character which was Camille. All the characters were perfect.
Ugh this damn show is perfect!
I will be re-watching it again.
THIS SHOW IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Watch the show for it's great acting, directing and screenplay. Watch this show for a mind blowing plot.

One of the best tv shows of 2018.

loading replies

This show reminds me of the first season of True Detective. Tone and pacing are quite similar, although it's not as good as TD.

3 episodes in, and still hooked.

loading replies

Could've been trimmed to 4 episodes, instead of 8, but streaming platforms need hours and hours of content, I guess.
While it had some impressively well-acted moments, they got diluted in the endless ennui of drinking and driving around.
Nonetheless, psychological issues, like emotional abuse, self-harm, complex post-traumatic stress disorder, learned helplessness, traumatic bonding etc., were presented very accurately.
To people who found it excellent, I'd recommend checking out Season 1 of The Sinner (2017), and all of the Bates Motel (2013).

Enchanted's prequel is kinda weird... isn't it?

Creepy and realistic without ghouls and goblins. Liked a lot!!! Great actors!!!

It is not a series for everyone, it has a certain psychological touch.

A good job of the cast, although and to highlight the sublime work of the three main actresses, their characters are extremely complex.

You can feel the pain and the layers of the characters, especially these three women.

Amy Adams brutal at all and demonstrating her great artistic quality, photography and sublime decorations.

Some beautiful and well-crafted dialogues, at first it may seem like a somewhat slow series if it is not customary to see slow cooking series.

The end of the series is sublime, undoubtedly one of the best miniseries of 2018 if not the best.

Super recommended series.

Halfway through and quite the worst so far I have watched, so bad ,I need to know how it ends and if the dross continues. The drinking is overplayed, the flashbacks are overplayed, the laid back attitudes of the characters are overplayed the younger girls are uN believable and badly acted. This is over indulgent on behalf of the director.

This is a deeply disturbing mystery. It is a slow reveal, taking an abundance of time to get into the lead character's head (maybe too much time) but then, when the mystery begins to coalesce, the resolve has an excruciating brutality from which you can't look away. The acting superb. The direction is cohesive. I was giving the early episodes a 7 (good) because the quality was good but the writing was belaboured, but, the last three episodes raise the series to an 8 (great) out of 10. [Mystery Drama]. Available on Amazon Prime.

Great show, wonderful to watch. Even enjoyable for someone who is not American, but European and not a native speaker.
All the roles were perfectly cast, as far as I’m concerned.like someone else that, it starts slowly and somewhat confusing but it picks up pace and you will need an elastic band to keep your hair in place, in the end. This season is highly recommendable.

Characters were GREAT! amy adams is superb… loved it!

This is the best thing I’ve ever watched. I love the way the director explores the medium, challenges our expectations. Using memory to distort time and unsettle the viewer in such an excellent way. I hope he makes more tv. I hope Amy Adams wins best actress in literally every medium possible for this

At minimum this is some of the best writing, acting and editing of the year.
