The story takes place on Terschelling, which is closed off from the rest of the Netherlands at the end of the 19th century. Sil Droeviger, a farmer in Oosterend, supplements his income for his family, consisting of his wife Jaakje and sons Jelle and Wietse, with beachcombing. One day a strong storm arises and Sil rescues a girl from a sunken Swedish dinghy, while the mother drowns. Sil takes the girl home and raises her as his own daughter. He calls her Lobke, just like their daughter who died shortly after birth.

A Swedish ship is wrecked. Little Lobke is the only one to survive this disaster. She is taken into the family of Sil and Jaakje Droeviger, who have two sons - Jelle and Wietse -. Because it is not certain whether Lobke still has parents and religion is also a problem, so Lobke's baptism still takes place after much arguing with the pastor.

Jelle and Maam are increasingly together. Lobke has the most grip on Sil; she can still go to catechism. When Jelle has sprained his ankle and cannot join in, Sil calls on Wietse. However, he wants to hand over everything to the beach warden as it should be. Sil becomes enraged and knocks his son to the ground. The next day, Wietse appears to have left. He's been to sea what he wanted. times are tough for the family.

During the Sunderum party it appears that Lobke has been dancing with Jelle all evening. He cares about her much more than as a brother. This to the great sorrow of Maam. She thought she was dancing with Jelle but turned out to have Aike in her arms. Sil looks at his son's attention to Lobke with great eye. that is not possible because he is his sister period. Quarrel is the result.

During the night distress signals from a ship are heard by Jelle. He awakens the whole neighborhood but his father hears it last. Jelle tries to save the crew by transferring a line. That works, but the islanders are shocked to see that no one is able to save Jelle from drowning. The pastor now helps Sil with his great grief. In the summer Lobke goes shopping and then suddenly Wietse is standing in front of her; if he never left.

Joy everywhere at Wietse's return. He loves Lobke and wants to get married. Lobke wants nothing more than that, but suddenly it turns out that there is a gossip going on in the village that Maam is pregnant with Jelle. On his own initiative, Wietse goes to Maam's parents to propose to marry Maam in order to avoid the family shame. That goes too far to Lobke because she only knows that Jelle was with her on the night of the party at which Maam says she was with Jelle. Under pressure, Maam tells that the child belongs to Aike. Maam marries Aike and Lobke has her Wietse. That all ends well.
