1997x01 In Search of Lawrence

  • 1997-06-06T19:00:00Z1h

In order to probe the reality behind the Lawrence of Arabia myth, and test the veracity of T E Lawrence's account of his wartime exploits in `The Seven pillars of wisdom', writer and explorer Michael Asher retraces the footsteps of Lawrence, using the same methods of transport, equipment and resources Lawrence would have used in his day. This takes Asher and his Arab companion - a Bedouin descendant of Lawrence's great tribal ally, Auda bu Tayi of the Howeitat - through the deepest deserts in the Middle East to the coast of Jordan. Along the way they find, still untouched from Lawrence's day, remnants of his work, campaigns and life, including Turkish military trains that he destroyed through his guerrilla war tactics.

The Impressionists and their circle have become the international superstars of Western painting. The works of Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh appear everywhere and are well loved by the public and academics alike. But whilst their popularity is greater than ever, it is easy to forget the revolutionary nature of the Impressionists' art. They broke away from tradition not only in their technique – by using touches of colour to capture movement and light – but in their subject matter too, depicting ordinary people at work and leisure. In this series, Tim Marlow takes us on a journey through the great art movement of the late nineteenth-century and explores some of the most beautiful paintings ever created. This collection contains all eight episodes from the Tim Marlow series: Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh.

Made to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, In Search Of Mozart is a detective story that takes us to the heart of genius. Produced with the world’s leading orchestras and musicians, the prolific composer’s story is told through a 25,000 mile journey along every route Mozart followed. In Search of Mozart traces his life through his music and extensive correspondence. From K1a to K626 (Requiem), over 80 works are featured, revealing striking parallels between the music and Mozart's own experiences. But it is the music that takes centre stage, with the jigsaw of Mozart's life fitting snugly around it. With rigorous analysis from musicologists and experts such as Jonathan Miller, Cliff Eisen, Nicholas Till, Bayan Northcott and the late Stanley Sadie, a new, vivid impression of the composer emerges. It dispels the many common myths about Mozart's genius, health, relationships, death and character, to present a new image, very different from Milos Forman's Amadeus. Narrated by Juliet Stevenson and with Mozart voiced by Samuel West, the series features interviews and performances with over 70 of the greatest exponents of Mozart's music.

This is the story of the 1974 British and Irish Lions Tour to South Africa. The team remained unbeaten throughout the Tour and were later dubbed The Invincibles. In 1974, the South African apartheid regime was under worldwide condemnation, and the country was banned from the Olympic Games and almost all international sporting events. In defiance of the developing international policy to isolate South Africa, the British and Irish Lions rugby team accepted the invitation to tour the country and play a test series against their ancient rivals, the legendary Springboks. This decision invoked a fierce reaction from the media and public, and the government disowned the team. The resulting series was one of the most violent the Lions ever played and the 22 matches produced remarkable rugby, including some of the most memorable tries in any series. After winning match after match, their captain christened them 'The Invincibles'. With footage showing Nelson Mandela's anti-apartheid movement and what life under the regime really meant for black South Africans, this film is a celebration of a remarkable rugby team and a poignant reminder of the scale of change in South Africa since that landmark tour.

In 2013 all of Norway celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Edvard Munch (1863 – 1944), one of the towering figures of modern art. This is already being hailed a "once-in-a-lifetime show" . Global interest is huge – not least as a result of one of his four The Scream paintings having recently set a public art auction record of $120 million. Many know Munch as the man who painted The Scream, but his complete works are remarkable and secure his place as one of the greatest artists to have ever lived. Munch 150 is co-hosted by the National Museum and the Munch Museum, both in Oslo. With 220 paintings on show, it brings together the greatest number of Munch's key works in one place. This event film will be going behind-the-scenes to show some of the process of putting the exhibition together — as well as providing an in-depth biography of a man who lived from the mid-19th century right through to the German occupation of Norway in the Second World War. Special guests will also offer their expert insight and knowledge to host Tim Marlow. Munch 150: A superb art exhibition and a fantastic event film.

Bold, decadent, ambitious and sometimes of questionable taste, there is no better symbol of the Eighties than the rise of the music video. With the launch of MTV in 1981, extraordinary music was suddenly matched with daring film-making in a medium that had budgets to blow and no existing rules. The Music Videos That Shaped The 80’s is a celebration of the ground-breaking music videos of the decade and the explosion of London-based talent that contributed to them. Artists including Bob Geldof, Herbie Hancock, Roger Taylor and Richie Sambora, and directors David Mallet, Russell Mulcahy and Kevin Godley, discuss some of the key videos of the period, from Queen’s ‘I Want to Break Free’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’ to The Buggles’ ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’, aptly the first ever video to be shown on MTV. Also featuring music by Bon Jovi, The Boomtown Rats, The Cure and David Bowie, this documentary reveals how the most memorable videos of the decade helped to redefine the music industry forever.

Music critics Michael Bonner, Hamish MacBain and John Aizlewood examine how Food Records helped the four-piece band - Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree - find fame with their distinctly English sound This enjoyable biography charts the rise of the band that, perhaps more than any other, came to symbolise British guitar music in the 90s. Inescapably, those execrable cliches "Britpop" and "Cool Britannia" are tossed about with impunity, but the programme's makers have at least shown some restraint in not dwelling too long on the manufactured feud with a certain Manchester group. 2016x05 Louie Spence: Taxi Driver

  • 2016-07-02T19:00:00Z1h

Mockumentary "Colourful television personality Louie Spence has been taken on as a cab driver for Harlow-based Metro Cars for a week's trial. In his new Sky 1 show Louie Spence: Taxi Driver, Louie can be seen driving around the town at the wheel of a mini cab. According to the show, the reason for the sudden change of career is that five years after his appearance in Pineapple Dance Studios he has found bookings have dried up, leaving him in need of another source of employment. To prepare for the show, Louie completed a genuine mini cab driving test and got himself a private operator's license before being offered a job at Metro Cars. The show features Louie picking up and dropping off customers, sometimes following them on to their jobs, nights out or events – including football training at Harlow Town FC, taking part in an amateur wrestling tournament and performing at a retirement home. A spokesman for the show, which was filmed in February, said: "Add in to this the potential for the odd celebrity passenger, a tempestuous and often flirtatious relationship with a radio dispatch operator and the day-to-day shenanigans of a real-life cab office and you've got a recipe for a joyous and fun mix of real-world actuality and Louie's traditional breakout happening."

ovelist, poet, social critic and above all in his own words 'an outsider', D. H. Lawrence was described by E. M. Forster as 'the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation'. Partly because of his early death, partly because of the harassment he suffered and partly because of the poverty he endured, there is a deep sense of sadness underlying his life - despite the brilliance, the enormous talent and the unwavering dedication to his wife. D. H. Lawrence's work has produced divergent and demanding reactions. There are issues in his work of gender, class and race. Much of his style and explicit content flouts aesthetic and literary norms. There is an intensity and darkness in much of Lawrence's work that challenges and provokes. Lawrence described his deepest belief in his essay Democracy as: “each man shall be spontaneously himself – each man himself, each woman herself, without any question of equality entering in at all; and that no man shall try to determine the being of any other man, or of any other woman". Deeply sensitive yet at times aggressive, intensely preoccupied with sexuality and the truths of human nature, accused of misogyny and worse, Lawrence remains a writer of incredible ability, consistently challenging literary norms and hauntingly brave in his personal, intellectual and creative life.

The inside story of a legendary night and the last perfect rave This remarkable new feature documentary takes us back to 2002 and an extraordinary moment in time, when social and cultural history reached a crossroads. The Big Beach Boutique 2 was a UK rave event, with the iconic Fatboy Slim as DJ. Forty thousand ravers were expected on the beach in Brighton that day, but more than a quarter of a million turned up, and the event made history – both good and bad. Now, 20 years on, this film tells the story of the people and the event through moving interviews (including Fatboy Slim), exhilarating archive and visual alchemy. But it’s also about hedonistic times and the last hurrah of the rave movement before it ascended from the underground to the mainstream. It also explores a darker side through the disobedience, disorganisation, danger and jeopardy around the rave – and the slightly weird turn- of-the-century pop politics in play.
