Solid mid season finale, but seriously, "one last time" going horribly wrong? Doesn't get more cliche than that.

100% They're in a alternate universe... why tell us all of that information that it may be possible and then they end up in a place they have never been before/can't recognise.

Mid season breaks - how I hate them. Anyway

The word has been spoken, there are parallel universes out there. Just speculating but that is the only way they can get away with all the continuity issues this show has had so far. And I would be OK with that approach. But I wonder why they choose to go this route in the first place because it is at the base level the same thing Abrams did with his alternate timeline. The possibillity to ignore canon and to do something new. Maybe instead of producing a post Voyager show this would make it easier for new viewers to get into the Trek universe without the necessity to know all that´s been done before. And not completely alienating the fan base. But as I said - just speculating.

And now I´m looking forward to the continuation.
