1 Group Hug, 3½ Hugs and Lots of Tears. Yawn!!
When Michael and her mom engaged in that rather rambling and unnecessarily emotional conversation, was anyone else expecting V'Kir to interrupt at any time to say "this is beyond the scope of this quorum"? Because I sure as hell was. V'Kir must have been distracted, checking his Facebook, at that time...
Also, I'm calling it: Saru and President T'Rina will be the William Riker and Deanna Troi of the future. Expect lots of bathtub scenes with bottles of champagne in future episodes.
Edited to correct "Deanna Troy" to "Deanna Troi". I'm such a lousy Star Trek fan, please forgive my poor Betazoid grammar.
The soap opera writers that have been put in charge of this ,once revered, franchise continue to distort and abuse the long and beloved history of Star Trek canon to subvert it to their own hand. In past seasons we've seen that Burnham was the reason Spock became who he was, we've lost beloved characters who have rejected everything they were before, Romulus was blown up and now we don't even have Vulcan anymore. Whatever reason these "writers" might have to do this is beyond me but it should be clear by now that it's malicious. Their ilk have destroyed 50 years of canon on Doctor Who, destroyed Star Wars and pretty much done the same to Trek. If rumors are to be believed they will soon include the Guardian of Forever and possibly deliver the final blow to Star Trek.
To the people defending this soap opera dribble... Well I don't know what to say to you. Character development, plot and the concept of coherent writing are cornerstones of anything that's good. These writers can't even keep track of events in the same episode let alone use a massive overarching storyline or how to benefit of over 50 years of worldbuilding.
It's disgraceful really what they have done and they should be ashamed of writing something that is below mediocre. But that appears to be modernday "entertainment" and by god... I hope it bites them back in their ass cause we'll all be worse off if it doesn't.
The T'Kal-in-ket event in this episode sums up the series perfectly.
It's initiated to convince with science and reason.
And ends up being all about drama and emotions.
And about Michael Burnham, of course.
WTF is this?!?
After the first Episodes I had hope that the push out of the known timeline would make this Show bareable to watch.
Sadly I have - again - been proven wrong.
Others have already pointed out, that they aren't even able to keep track of what is happening in their own show.
I try to ignore that (in addition to the Star Trek - I choose to watch it as another SciFi Show stealing certain ideas from ST, because this ain't Star Trek and it never was).
But what bugs me here is the blatant disregard of reason. What am I talking about?
Tilly is being offered 1st officer?!? TILLY?!?
She might or might not be a fine officer - we don't actually know but from what we have seen and how Saru and Michael talk about her she seems to be.
That doesn't change the fact that she basically just finished her Command Training program. Basically EVERY other officer has more experience than she does. And while it is not common to promote soley based on experience - for command functions, especially someone who has to replace the captain not just in case of death but also in case of heavy injury or other incapacitation (which happens quite frequently to ppl in Starfleet) it is a big factor.
The reasons Saru mentions are just stupid - that is part of the job, but the main functionality of a 1st officer is being able to replace the Captain - and I'd rather serve under Georgiou (yes I mean the fallen Emperor who killed and tortured ppl) than under Tilly.
And I get that the Commanders in Star Trek have always been young, so promotion times are likely shorter than in reality - but less than 2 years from Ensign to Commander? Really?!?
In reality there is usually more than a decade between those ranks.
And according to IMDB Mary Wiseman still plays ENSIGN Sylvia Tilly! That is THREE FULL RANKS under Commander!!!
They should have left the whole thing alone - since they cornered themselves here - the only person actually suited for the job and not exluded by facts like being part of the spore-drive other than Burnham was Cmdr Nhan. And they left her behind in Episode 5.
Harry Kim served 7 seasons and never got promoted. Tilly after 2 years. There is something wrong with that picture....
I also think we have to rename that show. Let‘s call it „Cry a lot Trek“... Its really hard to watch!!!!
Drinking game: take a shot every time Sonequa Martin-Green starts whispering for no reason
This feels like proper Trek. People stand around and actual have a conversation instead of talking at one another about the stakes. Strongest episode of this poor man's Trek for some time.
I'm 100% certain that Michael Burnham is clinically insane. In one scene she'll have 15 emotions.
how is michael mother still alive after 900 years?
Ok, callbacks all over the place, then they hit you with the feelz again! She acts so good I feel it when she does it for the federation so here comes the PROUD tears... Damn I love Star Trek!
Fav quote:
"Duty & joy go hand in hand,
"Duty is there so you can continue to pursue your happiness,
"And, joy is there so you have something real to fight for."
So many emotional pay-offs in this ep.: the different types of relationships and their meanings, the issues and continuing work being done around Spock's life work towards reunification, and the questioning torment Michael Burnham rightly puts herself through for choosing to break the Federation's most basic rules.... Even the small kudos between Book & Michael (Your family are seriously chronic overachievers) and Tilly & Stamets, tickle me in just the right places!
A real dopamine fest! haha
I just wish we could have heard the phrase, "Choose to live my brothers!" from Michael's Mom, and whip out that sword. hahaha
I never wtched old star Trek, only the new movies and Discovery and New Worlds... but this ep is the first this season that I felt was Star Trek. This season is so over the place and rightfully so after a jump over 930 years but it felt like we had first ep, bunch of fillers, and now we are on the track with the season... when it's already half done! I'm not a fun of any time jumps in series, time travel or not, always need a lot of eps to get back with interest.
I'm so lucky I like Micheal bc as I can see by the comments, it would be a hell ride to watch Discovery and not like her xD And I do like seeing her fight but I love the monologues they write for her like in this ep <3
7/10
"SAY YES"
A very good episode and I was emotionally charged all the way through and this is how you introduce
Absolute Candor not like they did in the absolute Garbage show named
Picard.
Star Trek Discovery is
So Awesome and so Fcuking Cool.
This is the best Trek at it's absolute Best.
Michael is totally frickin Awesome and is definitely carrying the show and I honestly can't get enough of her on screen, she is a Phenomenal Actress and definitely deserves an Emmy for her amazing performances.
This is getting pretty emotional (got wet eyes a few times) but I must admit that I like it (as long as not all episodes will be like this). Tbh it's a pretty weird show but at this point I'm simply in it for the ride :D
And all of this diplomacy and interpersonal connections is (or at least should be) really at the core of the Federation.
Honor the past, take on new challenges
"... My brother would have found it illogical to sacrifice knowledge to avoid risk." Sounds like the battle that's being fought as we speak...
So basically the Vulcans/Romulans built a webway, then Magnus The Red happened?

Just when you thought the show writers couldn't stoop any lower, they found a stronger shovel and dug deeper. One big F U to all true Star Trek fans.
