I couldn't figure out what was different about this compared to TNG and then I realized it was the emotional string instruments in the background and big speeches meant to make me emotional instead of rational which is what I loved about Star Trek growing up. I don't want an emotional drama there are plenty of shows for that but Star Trek is supposed to appeal to our rational mind and get us thinking critically about the way we view the world or deal with our interpersonal relationships. Meh. I'm out.
Well, Picard easily manages what Discovery fails at time and again - engaging characters whom I actually care about, interactions without emotional striptease... and an exciting storyline. Of course, we've seen almost everything before, Q, Guinan, the Borg, alternate realities. Who cares? I'll take this every time as long as I relate to the characters. And honestly, "Picard" is a shout back to what made the name Star Trek great, what else is there to say?
It really wouldn't be fair to judge the entire season by its first episode, so we'll just have to watch and see how things evolve further. It's good to see the old crew again for one final adventure, but above all, I'm just excited about the (even remote) prospect of seeing/hearing about Gabriel Bell/Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks).
Man come on a floating green cloud in space asks to speak to only Picard and nobody in all of star fleet thought, "hey everything about this screams borg, let's send a hologram first." Idiots, this isn't even the first time the borg did this lol.
What can I say, I’ve missed JLP and this show one episode in has me hoping for more and a plot that expands on all those teased thus far.
I go into this season with little expectations. No, let me rephrase that. I go into this season with no expectations. I am even pretending, to a certain degree, the first season doesn't exist.
They are really holding a lot of hoops up to jump through. Trying to win back the base while at the same time attracting new audiences. In an inifinte universe they always come back to the same stories and formulae. They revive old names, bring back old characters and old enemies. I'm not tickled - the episode went by and even the return of once loved characters didn't create an effect one way or the other.
How does no one in Starfleet recognize what that anomaly was? Everything screamed "Borg" from the look to the voices in the transmission. And I'm not just saying that because we know the Borg are featured in this season.
I'm sure there will be a lot of conversation this season, there always is with Star Trek. There will be those who like it and those who don't. At this point I'm neither here nor there.
Promising season opening. But we've been there before and so far Kurtzman & Co always managed to disappoint later on. So I won't hold my breath for this one either.
The best part about a season at this stage is that it's still allowed to make no sense. The painful realization follows later.
If we all agree that season 1 didn't happen, then I am willing to give this one a chance. The story with Q sounds promising, CG is obviously top notch, but did they really have to introduce this domestic violence subplot into Picard's life?
Well, not sure how this season will turn out eventually but there are some promising aspects. Borg, Q, Guinan - awesome - hopefully not just a fan service unrelated to the story. I confess, I don't understand the story yet. Eventually, the plot of this episode may turn out as BS. Like, why did the Borg need Picard above all persons? And must there always be a temporal/spatial anomaly, and a parallel universe where people dress in black in all of those new Star Trek shows? Plus, why all that stupid fighting? Seven fist fights (though I don't spot the Rock), officers fire on the bridge although their commanding officer told them not to. Is that the quintessence of Star Trek? Fighting? Call it Star Wars then.
I give this season premiere a 6/10 for the promising aspects it shows. Let's hope I'm not disappointed.
it was poop. 3/10
Once you get past the relentless pretentiousness (still) and the cliched characters, this one has plenty of interesting bits as it sets the stage for the season. I had to laugh, though, when I realized that Picard's decisions -- or lack thereof -- were the direct cause of the problems being faced. Again. At least he's consistent in that regard...
They should just have let Picard retire. Instead they stubbornly keep pulling him out of the mothballs. Too pretentious, and terribly boring. Resistance is futile, but I won't be annihilated.
:expressionless: can’t compare to Discovery series…
The storyline is very slow and boring…

Okay let's get this out the way first.
All different voices coming through together all at once through a green cloud , even I thought hm that's Borg but all the brains at starfleet didn't, then they are talking about starfleet are integrating Borg technology into their ships and I'm like yeah that's coming back to bite them in their warp engines.
Right with that being said this episode could quite possibly be the strongest episode of the hole damn show, is it Star Trek Discovery perfection no but that show is a flawless Masterpiece but this episode wasn't just one long boring exposition dump like season one was.
Surprisingly this was interesting and pretty much kicked ass and was rather tense. It definitely added something new to what we are so familiar with already. It was totally Awesome that they brought back 2 of my all time favourites from TNG
days. I will say that Romulan Lady deserves better she's lovely and where is her male partner again from season 1, how did he die. But all that being said Awesome start and I hope they don't just piss it all away like they did with season 1 which was very very disappointing and ultimately a waste of my time.
Lets just see with round 2 shall we
That Guinan excuse was idiotic, otherwise can't wait for more Q!!
It is the 25th century and people continue to use weak password, some have to tell Picard that picard-0-0-0-0 it is not a good password
A strong opener for the new season! Super advanced borg Queen... Used the same line as Picard's mother. Is that supposed to make us think it might be her or simply a tactic since his memories would have been absorbed into the collective at one point when he was assimilated.
As for Q at the end there and 'Road not taken', I'm guessing we're gonna get some alternate timeline fun!
I'm still holding out hope for a Seven x Janeway reunion at one point or another. We've established she's queer already. Now stop this nonsensical romance with Raffi and crack on.
It has a slow start but is still better and more exciting than Star Trek “So Brave” Discovery once it starts going.
4.5/10
The short version: WTF?!?
The long version: WTF did I just watch and WTF did they do to this show??? :o
I was really looking forward to S2 but so far this was just a bad, confusing mess!
I don't like the large time gap/jump between S1 and S2. It seems like we missed quite a few events and this really gets me out of the flow... :o I really liked S1 - it wasn't perfect but it was good. The final episode was a bit weak but still fine. However, this episode kinda already ruined S2 for me. I'm not sure how they'll manage to recover from this. Looking at the average rating I'm in a minority here but I really don't like the new concept. It's too focused on Picard (especially too focused on his past!), the team is split up, I cannot really relate to the characters anymore (and I really don't like that they turned Soji into some sort of barbie princess!), it starts off way too fast, and it also seems way too dark so far. Overall, it failed to impress me and I'm not really feeling the story/emotion at all so far.
I've got a bad feeling about this... It feels like S2 is to S1 what the new Star Wars movies are to the old ones (I like Rogue One, Solo, The Mandalorian, etc. but not the main movies anymore).
Maybe I'm just getting to old/bored for Star Trek though. I miss the science and realism/consistency. I remember Star Trek being much better in this regard than Star Wars (which focuses on fantasy) but it probably was never as good as in my memory.
I wish this was just a dream of Picard...
Agnes being drunk on a ship, Chris a strange captain, Soji a barbie/princes - everything is just so strange/different. And tbh it felt like a space soap opera. I was kinda just waiting for a random musical/dance scene. Maybe later in S2?
It was boring until the last 10 minutes or whatever.

That was much better than expected. Definitely a second chance for this series.
