Now this is what I've come to expect from Star Trek. Cleaner content; an epic, movie-like plot; dealing with intergalactic life...this one was fabulous.

Content Concerns:
Sex: Polygamy on an alien planet is discussed. 4/5
Nudity: Cleavage; a woman in an off-the-shoulder dress; a man wears a vest-like outfit with no undershirt. 3/5
Language: One use of the d-word. 4/5
Violence: A brawl to the death; a man is impaled and poisoned, which is slightly bloody. 3/5
Drugs: Poisoned weapons; talk of a vaccine; Picard is seen drinking what appears to be alien wine. 3/5
Frightening/Intense Scenes: The brawl to the death; emotional intensity; talk of millions dying from a disease. 3/5
Other: Talk of human evolution. 4/5

Score: 4.5/5

Some say this is a racist and misogynistic episode. Well, obviously they are black. Obviously they look like humans. Obviously they are dressed like an African or an Arabic tribe (well sort of - some say they look like MC Hammer). They are masculine. They are patriarchs. They are proud warriors. They are not comfortable with strong women. They have archaic rituals. That doesn't mean that writers wanted to say that contemporary black humans are like that. That's at least not what I derive from this scenario. I never forget that they are aliens. I never feel writers want to belittle African culture. In TOS the commanding officers represented the patriarchy and TOS's writer were fine with this. In this episode I have no doubt that Starfleet defends women rights and doesn't condone the aliens' been behavior.

The story is mediocre. The fight scene is memorable though. I was entertained. I like that there's some sort of philosophical discussion around the prime directive and moral concerning what there's to win and to loose in the fight. That's not philosophy 401 but better than most TOS episodes.

I know that this is infamously regarded as one of, if not the, worst episode of TNG. But man, it really is shitty. The idea that Starfleet would be forced to respect and play along with literal abduction is just ludicrous. Also, Yutan being held up as some kind of ideal attractive virile male is hilarious. Dude is pretty frumpy looking.

It is considered by the majority to be the worst episode of the first season. Do yourself a favour and skip it.
