This episode feels like a remnant from season one. In fact it feels more like something from the sixties. A good looking swashbuckler type that has women melting through his fingers just because he smiles at them doesn't feel much like 24th century. Then again it is only natural that you have lighter themed episodes during the course of a seasons and ones that keep the budget in check.
What makes this episode watchable are Datas attempts at understanding humor. Something that adds very much to the depth of the character. And it displays Spiner's acting talents.
Little easter egg: althought only being referred to as "The Comic" keep your eye on the Display when Data looks ar the selection. If you own the HD version as you probably won't see it on the SD.

Quite a weak story here I thought. Even in the 24th century women seem to be all too easily swept off their feet by a guy with a nice smile

TOS's Mudd meets SW's Han Solo meets Star Trek's TNG. It's that bad as it sounds.

Data literally isn't funny in this episode. It's sad they wasted the exploration of his obvious deficiencies by putting it in such a medicine episode. Even Guinan can't save this part.

There's also a very classic Star Trek problem about when it's appropriate to grant asylum and protection. There's a fugitive who's hunted on basis of an archaic alien jurisdiction. The crew must must find a clever off-ramp. It's a first in TNG (I believe) but it has countless iterations in later seasons and other installments of the franchise. This episode is particularly bad in discussing this issue, since it doesn't really knows what it wants to be: a serious episode or a comedy? Even the end that could perhaps be saved by finding a clever way out, is pure kitsch. More ridiculous than uplifting.

Data learns charisma on command from the absolute worst people. Luckily, none of it sticks.

Best thing about this episode really is, getting a glimpse of what it would have been like had they chosen Billy Campbell to play Riker.

This episode is interesting because it reminded me of, What if a Star Wars Character were in Star Trek?

A cringeworthy Han Solo ripoff. A half-baked Romeo & Juliet plot with an unremarkable surprise twist. Not a great episode.

Brent Spiner did a good job playing a humorless Data, but even that plot was kind of dumb.
