Absolutely beautiful. At the time, Trek was able to do stories that other shows couldn't (in today's TV landscape that's far less true) and this is a prime example. It works so well because Hallie Todd's adorable child-like performance, and Brent Spiner being able to play off that so well. Picard gets a great scene standing up to the Admiral, too.

Certainly made me cry, and laugh a lot at Riker's brief scene.

It's been a while since I previously saw this episode, and man-oh-man, let me tell you how I started crying when Lal walked into Troi's quarters, beginning to experience emotions, pointing to her own sternum to explain where she physically feels them.

I'm a sucker for any storyline or plot that deals with the plight of AI in the face of short-sighted humans who do not recognize their rights. This episode really triggered a lot of my sensitivities about that, about being a parent, and the development and role of emotions in a person's life.

Another brilliant episode about Datas journey towards becoming more human but also about humanity in general. It also builds up a little bit on "Measure of a Man" as it seems obvious why Starfleet wants to take control of Lal. There are so many great lines in here. I was a little bit taken aback at first about Picard's behavior towards Data at the beginning. But ultimately he comes around and, once again, stands up for Data, and Lal, as sentient beings.
The end is really heartbreaking and one of the huge differences to many of todays shows is, that you care for a character you only "met" at the beginning, while today you care not for them after a full season. At least that is true for me.
Oh, and if Lal means "beloved" isn't that the same as Imzadi ? Never noticed that before.

Who knew that Lizzie McGuire’s mom once played a robot?

As an old-school Disney Channel fan, I was surprised!

There’s a lot of this episode that is well meant but not good but this is a pretty important Data moment
