Ah, well. What's a little stabbing between friends?

Season 4 was going so well up until this point. This feels more like the sort of episode we got in the first couple of seasons, although I will say it's still above most of what we got there in quality. The problem here is that there is so little jeopardy or drama that it feels like nothing really happens. There's no great moral dilemma about Jono's situation with no real pressure for them to take him back to humankind at all.

The episode is saved somewhat by the actor for Jono, who does well with what he's given. Any threads of child abuse are cleared up by a clearly loving relationship between him and his adopted father. The banana split scene is pretty great (apart from the Data/Riker cringe worthy explanation).

Most interesting here is Captain Picard, who's definitely showing more character growth than before. Worf could have been given more to do with Jono given their near identical backgrounds.

Morally speaking Picard made the right decision. But I have to agree there never really was anything at stake here. Even three of those ships presented no danger to the Enterprise. Maybe that's the whole point of the story ? That Picard reached that decision by himself ?

If you follow Michael Pillers guide that the main characters learn something about themself throught the guests than, yes, the story works. Otherwise there isn't much in it.
