The age old question of what happens after we die? Since no one really can answer it, I find it interesting that, instead of showing us some form of heaven, they choose to have Neelix find nothing. And after struggling with the fact he discovers that living is about what happens to you in life and not what awaits you after death. I like that.

Again we see that Neelix can be so much more than comic relief (which he seldom is anyway) and that Ethan Phillips is more than capable to deliver great performances if he gets the opportunity.

A surprisingly good Neelix episode!

The episode once you've seen it can be quite boring but the ending is very emotional. Having Ensign Wildman's back story with Neelix tugged at the heartstrings

Trigger warning on the suicide front

Not bad for a Neelix episode. Since Talaxian funeral customs last a week, I think he kinda jumped the gun in ditching his faith so easily after being dead only 18 hrs.

Damn.. This episode. It almost brought me to tears. Great performance by Ethan Philips, an excellent handling of a very heavy topic and one of the times Voyager showed that even though his presence isn't always liked by us viewers that Neelix is indeed the heart of the crew.

Me: Neelix is so goofy. I wish they could find a way to give him a little emotional complexity.
Me watching "Mortal Coil": Oh geez, not like THAT.

Give him a real story and even Neelix can be a decent character. A shattered belief about what's afterlife gonna look like, is hardly an innovative topic. It's still a good topic and classic Star Trek but isn't this basically a variation of the "spider web graveyard comet people" episode from one of the first seasons? Whatever, it makes a decent episode.

Naomi is cute, though. No wonder they'll use her more often in future episodes.

Best dialogue:

Neelix: The Kazon. Species 329 [...]
Neelix: Were they assimilated?
Seven: [...] They were unworthy of assimilation.

Eat this, writers! Even the Borg think they are stupid. Seven speaks truth one again.

I love Star Trek, you always learn something, and a part about yourself you've never come to realize is possible. Hope the new series does Star Trek Justice.
