Pretty good stuff, Spock's first command is something of a disaster and makes for entertaining viewing. I'm a bit stunned at how insubordinate and bigoted the lower-rank crew all are on this show, hardly a progressive view of humanity. I really hate the endings with the entire bridge crew laughing.

I had fun with this one; it had a great story!

Why in the hell would they even consider a burial when the clock is ticking to get off the planet. That is just stupid. You don't stop trying to save the living to bury the dead, that comes afterward if there is time. I'm with Spock on this one.

Space Bigfoot that sounded like a slowed down 1950s Godzilla roar... Lololol

Spocks all like, "look I gotta work or we're all gonna die." And everyone else is like, "but you gotta take time to do a eulogy."

This episode is great.

I've enjoyed the series so far but this is the first episode I thought was great.

I think I’d heard this one had a low regard among fans, and while I didn’t hate it, it was a rather annoying story, which seemed to be more about Spock dealing with humans than anything else.

Perhaps this was innovative when it first aired, but I can't enjoy this. Plot is generic. The monster is stupid. Stage design is a paper mache and theatrical fog nightmare. Only the shuttle (and its FX plasma trace) and shuttle bay is somewhat interesting. Great picture of a quasar though. I guess that's how contemporary science imagined a quasar?

That's Spock's first command? Really? You're able to become second officer of the flagship w/o previous command experience? The Doctor and Spock arguing about the decent thing to do and how that conflicts with Spock's logic isn't great. Since Spock is such an intriguing character, this could have been told better. They also use the conflict between emotional and compassionate Kirk and strategic thinking commissioner Ferris to Illustrate the burden of command. Like the idea but that's badly told.

PS: I hate how the female yeoman serve drinks to the bridge crew. Is that a bar or something?

A lot of stuff that doesn't make sense here for me. Like, why send so many people to investigate that phenomenon ? The Story works with less people as well. They are just throw-ins to die.

And everyone is literally on Spocks case the second they crashed on that planet, which was hardly his fault. The hostility and, again, bigotry towards him are over the top. The Crew should know that he's got their best interest at (sorry) heart. Even McCoy is unusally hostile. Also, Spock was willing to sacrifice himself to save them. He's not putting himself above the rest.

I know they wanted to show that sometimes logic doesn't help. It's not the be-all, end-all of things. Neither is decision based on emotion. You have to weigh it. Which is pretty much was Spock did in the end, and what saved them.

Yes, we do get some insight into Spocks character but all in all the episode doesn't resonate with me.
