Stargate SG-1: Season 5

5x05 Red Sky

One of my favourite episodes plotwise, but the execution of their plan to fix the problem highlights a big bug-bear with the show.

We learn later that a wormhole with material in transit that is shut off early will pull power from the destination DHD to complete the trip, so they should be incapable of dumping the matter into the sun by switching off the gate at the right time. I get that it's actually the Asgard that fixes the problem, but the fact they think this was a viable solution in the first place irks me greatly.

Just another in a long line of plot-related forced moments where the gate does the thing they want against the established rules of gate physics. Like shutting off an incoming wormhole on-demand as long as the episode doesn't feature a threat following or attacking them through it.

Let me get this straight: Traveling to K'tau by stargate caused a problem in its sun. Part of developing a solution to that problem is Carter traveling back to Earth (also by stargate) and then sending more stuff back through the stargate to K'tau? Couldn't that make the problem worse? Seems dangerous.

They do realize that a fist sized amount of any element is not going to change the reaction of a star, right? No, apparently not...

The amount of MacLarenium compared to a star would be like a grain of salt to a swimming pool. Throwing in a grain of salt is not going to make the swimming pool salty. Adding MacLarenium won't stop the reaction... of course on the flip side, it would take several planets worth of plutonium to cause the effect in the first place...

All around a fairly annoying episode.
