Ruth Jones stars as a 40-something mum juggling the ups and downs of family life amid the chaos of her eccentric friends, relatives and children's fathers. Stella's world is populated by a wealth of characters including her best friend Paula (Elizabeth Berrington), who is a functioning alcoholic and funeral director. Then there’s lollipop man and youth rugby coach Alan (Steve Spiers), who has been in love with Stella since 1984 but who finds stiff competition in the form of dishy Sean (Kenny Doughty)... The brainchild of Ruth Jones, co-writer and co-star of the multi-award-winning Gavin and Stacey, Stella is a ten-episode family saga set against the backdrop of the Welsh valleys.

The only problem is, the would-be star has two left feet. Can Bobby's choreography do the trick? After the disastrous school reunion, Stella tries to forget her drunken misdemeanours and keep out of trouble by working at the undertakers, but there's nowhere to hide when she accidentally interrupts what appears to be a romantic date between Rob and Melissa. Alan has a nasty run-in with his ex-wife too, having learnt the rugby club is falling into the hands of a property development company. Never defeated, he's planning a counter-attack, albeit an ambitious one. Elsewhere, Paula and Dai's bumpy break-up takes an unexpected turn with the unhappy couple swapping traits - while Dai develops an unhealthy attachment to booze, his wife samples life as a sober singleton. (Mis)Guided by Peschman's spiritual teaching, Paula aspires to be a more generous person and offers to babysit Emma's son, only to fall off the wagon - well, the bus - and lose little Abrha on the way to his naming ceremony. Without the baby, there might not be much of a bash, but Jagadeesh's rendition of It's Not Unusual, plus the unexpected arrival of Luke's new foe, Lenny, really kick off the party.

Paula, on the other hand, doesn't believe in suffering in silence like her estranged partner, and instead expresses her feelings at the long-awaited Got to Dance auditions, giving judge and guest star Ashley Banjo a show he'll never forget. Bobby's first solo funeral also turns into a fiasco when two parties arrive at the cemetery to find only one plot, causing the funeral director to take unusual action to resolve the, ahem, grave situation. There's a rumble elsewhere in the valleys as Luke butts heads - and fists - with Lenny in the amateur boxing championship. Meanwhile, Big Alan's 'Save Our Pitch' campaign scores a vital try towards victory as Rob quibbles the morals of his property development project. Melissa, though, is willing to use any means necessary to ensure her silent partner stays schtum about his doubts.

Fight night arrives in Pontyberry and, while Lenny is prepared to play dirty, Luke is indifferent about the impending clash and more concerned about inning over Zoe. Stella isn't enthusiastic about Luke's boxing career, either, and confronts Rob for wrongfully encouraging their son, but the debate only reignites sparks between the old lovers. Alan remortgages his house in an effort to raise funds for the rugby club, although the valiant gesture could work against him if Melissa follows through on her threat to apply for sole custody of Little Alan. Paula also resorts to desperate measures to get Dai back, while Leah cries wolf to Jagadeesh about an 'affair' with Sunil. Amid the chaos, Ben bravely asks his beloved Bethan out on a date, however her answer leaves him flummoxed.

Wonders never cease in Pontyberry in the penultimate episode of the series as unlucky-in-everything Alan becomes the local Casanova. His previously untapped luck with the ladies comes in handy when his re-mortgage application gets rejected, teaming up with Aunty Brenda to raise funds for the rugby club. The pair organise a charity match and even manage to bag former Welsh international player Scott Quinnell to coach the locals. Off the pitch, Rob and Stella try to rebuild their trust in one another, but the promising reunion is cut short by the surprise return of Sean, who has some eye-opening news. While Nadine and Karl plan to expand their family, Stella's is bursting at the seams once Zoe moves in, with Lenny continuing to pester the brood. It all kicks off on game day as Emma's pent-up anger with Sunil finally explodes, and Alan reveals the identity of Melissa's 'silent business partner'.
