On the A27 in Hampshire, time is running out for road gangers Steve and Robbie. They have an epic resurfacing of a dual carriageway to carry out – but it hits the skids when the late arrival of the cone lorry needed to shut off the road is closely followed by the no-show of the tar truck.

In Essex, site manager Steve has a bold plan to build a new slip road and pedestrian subway under the busy Army & Navy roundabout. But could the million pound job be in danger of folding because of some specially moulded concrete blocks not fitting together like Lego as planned?

And in Hampshire, likely lads Mike and Russ are in a race to stop a busy country lane cut-through falling apart at the seams – and an unsuspecting motorist ending up in the hedgerow as a result.

In Buckinghamshire, lost tempers all round as night-time roadworks on the A412 take a wrong turn and site manager Tom finds himself squaring off against an angry trucker who has failed to see the “Road closed” signs.

In the Pennines, we climb Station Road, one of the steepest roads in the country. And join Andy and Richard from the Cheshire gulley clearing crew, who keep the drains free from field muck and slurry. It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it!

And in Essex, on the B179, for old hand Richard a simple pothole repair runs into trouble when his disc-cutter runs out of gas and an HGV lorry insists on squeezing through.
