[5.7/10] Pardon my language for a kids show, but when it comes to Robin and Starfire, Teen Titans needs to shit or get off the pot. I don’t mind if the show continues on as it has, with strong implications that the two have crushes on one another, but don’t really bring them to the surface because they’re shy and awkward about it. But if they’re going to bring those issues to the fore like this, they need to resolve them, just not just continue to pussyfoot around.
They definitely shouldn’t play this “Men are from Mars, women are from Tamaran” nonsense game. The tiff between the two heroes is so painfully basic and sitcommy in its treatment of romantic relationships, even teenage one. Why they need to make Starfire all stereotypically huffy about the “she’s not my girlfriend” statement, and Robin so stereotypically oblivious is beyond me.
But I might have even tolerated some of that if it was at least done as an excuse for Starfire and Robin to confess their feelings for one another. It would result in a change in the status quo, so I get why the show didn’t want to go there. But having them halfway express their feelings, and then not quite go all the way on it is just dumb.
The B-story, where Beast Boy tries to gather Cyborg’s parts is more lame comedy crud. The best you can say for it is that it’s mercifully brief. But it makes Beast Boy out to be a total idiot and Cyborg out to be someone so myopic that he can’t understand someone needing more basic instructions. Again, it oversimplifies both characters.
The one story here that I did like was the very brief C-story where Raven runs into a group of alien Lilliputians/Pikmin. It’s not much, but their imitative tone, and the way that Raven goes from being irked by them to being feted by them is an easy laugh.
Overall, this is a weaker outing that might have salvaged something from its less-than-great execution if the show at least had the stones to pull the trigger on the relationship it spends most of this episode teasing.
