2014x14 Facing Storms

  • 2014-04-03T22:00:00Z2h 10m

Their names are Qumaira, Petra, Dirk, Ulla.... They hit France throughout the autumn and winter. Behind these names hides a succession of violent storms the likes of which France has rarely experienced. The entire coastline still bears traces of it. How do we experience these storms in threatened areas of the seaside? What are the consequences for the erosion of our coasts? And what concrete solutions are there to limit the effects of wave strike? Thalassa tries to answer these questions by going to meet those who, on the coasts of Brittany, Normandy, Aquitaine or the Mediterranean, face the wrath of the sea but who would not leave their corner of the coast for anything in the world.

2014x43 Scotland, a strong nature

  • 2014-10-23T22:00:00Z2h 10m

Scotland sometimes looks like the end of the world, the "Far West" of Europe. To live in this territory is to accept the rules of the game of Nature, on the sea as well as on land. Whether on the remote Hebridean Islands, along the rugged coasts, in lochs lined with clumps of heather or at the foot of a castle hidden in the mist, Scotland is a region full of legends and stories that span the centuries. Nature is strikingly beautiful. The men who have chosen to live here claim their freedom and protect their heritage with pride, from the Scottish Sea to the North Sea.

2015x01 The Gironde estuary

  • 2015-01-01T23:00:00Z2h 10m

The Gironde estuary is the largest estuary in Western Europe. Nature is changeable and sometimes capricious: islands are born while others disappear before the gaze of its inhabitants. A different view depending on whether they live on the right bank or the left bank... This gigantic estuary is the landmark of small, unspoilt universes that are well apart. Architects have had a field day constructing unique buildings when it is not summer visitors who reinvest in troglodyte houses with breathtaking views of the Gironde. The estuary is an opportunity to meet men and women who help us discover the secrets of the place of their happiness.

16,000 km from Paris, New Caledonia offers much more than postcard landscapes. This little piece of France of the antipodes conceals real treasures. Since 2008, its lagoon has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This unspoilt setting is full of abundant nature. Turtles, sharks and dugongs live peacefully along the second longest barrier reef in the world after Australia. But for how much longer? Aware of the challenge of preserving such a legacy, men and women are fighting so that future generations can also marvel at such biodiversity.

2015x05 Greece, the new Odyssey

  • 2015-02-05T23:00:00Z2h 10m

What if the sea came to Greece's rescue? What if the sea was one of the solutions to the crisis? "The sea has a country" was an advertising slogan in the 70's! This adage is even truer today. With more than 20 million tourists last year, and a population of 11 million, Greece and its coastline are attracting more than ever. With a coastline of 15,000 kilometres, more than 9,000 islands and islets, Greece is a country where it is rare to lose sight of the sea. From the cliffs of the Corinth Canal to the herders of the Messolonghi Lagoon, from the sponge fishermen of Kalymnos, from the sailors of Samos to the shipowners of Piraeus, from the splendours of Santorini to the protected turtles of Zakhyntos, this film follows this possible rebirth along the water, this new maritime odyssey.

2015x06 Morlaix, Roscoff, Plymouth

  • 2015-02-12T23:00:00Z2h 10m

It's an invitation to sail on both sides of the Channel. On the northern Brittany side, it is a country of surprising lights, between Roscoff and the bay of Morlaix. It is also a country of sailors and farmers who never hesitate to look beyond the horizon, towards Plymouth in particular. The people who live along this green and contrasting coastline all say they are fascinated by the rhythm of the tides that reinvent the landscapes every day. On the other hand, we share the same pride, and each other's history is intimately linked.

The Seine estuary is the sea an hour from Paris, a place you think you know everything about... "In this estuary, it's nature trying to find its place alongside industries. We have to try to preserve it." A journey through this maritime campaign turns out to be a series of surprises, paradoxes, and astonishing images. For 160 kilometres, industry and commerce coexist here permanently, as best they can, with nature and historical heritage.

  • 2015-03-05T23:00:00Z2h 10m

The Camargue is the daily rendezvous of the sea and a river. The Rhône delta forms a sprawling territory. Seen from the sky, it looks like arms of land plunging into the Mediterranean, unless it's the other way around: the big blue setting out to conquer a wild yet fragile moorland. This world of land and water is a refuge for thousands of animals but it is also a haunt for travellers, nomads and adventurers in search of freedom.

Battered by the winds, scorched by the sun, these small pieces of land are difficult to access and little known to the general public; They have remained true paradises, rich in a totally preserved wild nature. Those who are lucky enough to live or work there open the doors to these islands full of mysteries...

The 2 million inhabitants of Europe's only ocean capital live in Lisbon and its surroundings to the rhythm of the tides. The sea is their salvation, whatever their age and whatever their social status.

Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world: 17,000 islands scattered between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. The inhabitants of these far-flung lands, often isolated, have always lived with and for the sea. 2016x03 Special Evening, solidarity at sea

  • 2016-02-25T23:00:00Z2h 10m

At sea, solidarity is not an empty word or a beautiful principle: it is a matter of course and very often a question of survival! This rule, long unwritten, is valid on all the seas of the world and in all circumstances. From MSF's hospital ship to offshore racing sailboats and the Rescuers at Sea - SNSM, Thalassa has chosen to dedicate an entire evening to those who live this generosity among seafarers on a daily basis.

Scientists, adventurers or tourists, they only dream of white. In France, this passion for the frozen and inhospitable worlds of the poles brings together the members of a very closed "club"! The Arctic and Antarctica have attracted and seduced very different personalities over the centuries. All of them paid with their lives, sometimes dearly, to gain access to these promised lands. Two very different worlds: in the North, the Arctic is an ocean of ice surrounded by continents, while in the South, Antarctica is a frozen continent surrounded by the sea.

Thalassa invites you to the south of France. We set off for Languedoc-Roussillon between the Pyrénées-Orientales and the gateway to the Camargue. It is a warm country where the lure of the Mediterranean has changed the landscape. On one side, the coastline bordered by its seaside resorts born 50 years ago, and on the other, a land of lagoons where small inland seas still keep secret unsuspected natural beauties. There is also a very old fishing tradition that is now endangered and chivalrous customs that are still very much alive in the heart of the Sète jousts.

With a strong character and a love of the ocean as their credo, they decided to live in this country that vibrates between the sea and the mountains. Five centuries ago, Basque fishermen went whale hunting on frail skiffs, harpoon in hand, today their heirs attack liquid mountains. Here we like to push our limits in all areas. Surfer of mythical waves, winemaker of the impossible, genius carpenter or fisherman, these women and men have chosen to bet on the energy of their native land. They symbolise the new Basque strength!

Perched on the Atlantic Ocean, 7 volcanic pebbles rise above the waves: this is the Canary archipelago shaped by nature and man. Hotspots for mass tourism for more than 50 years, these islands have become one of the most popular destinations in northern European countries. Far from the hordes of tourists and hotel bars, you will discover the hidden side of this archipelago, off the beaten track, only known by those who live in the shadow of volcanoes.

The Moon exerts a strong influence on the daily lives of humans and sets the rhythm of the lives of animals. Based on the latest scientific discoveries and technological advances with 3D images, the show allows you to travel to the four corners of the world to discover natural phenomena that are as incredible as they are mysterious. For example, once a year in Australia, some species of corals in the Great Barrier Reef lay eggs at exactly the same time. Farther on, on a beach on Christmas Island, crab females gather every year on a full moon night. In Mexico, we take a closer look at the pantagruelic feast of swordfish, which devour thousands of sardines, and then the "lunar wave" caused by the tidal heights in the Dordogne, in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, but also in India and Papua.
