I have to say, I was really impressed with this season. The ending to season 3 really didn't excite me for this forth season, but the writers have done an incredible job here and it may just be their best, or at least on par with season 2. The thing I loved most about season 2 was the dynamic and relationship between Clarke and Lexa, whereas here I feel like each and every character had a significant role in the plot and each were equally as interesting.
This season yet again focuses on what our characters are going to do to surive another world apocalypse, this time in the form of a nuclear wave going my the name of 'Praimfaya'. While the earlier part of the season was a lot of 'what are we going to do to survive' it was really the final 5ish episodes that made the season as strong as it is, some of The 100's best episodes to date are here such as the 'Hunger Games' feel episode 'Die All, Die Merrily'. An episode in which we see Octavia being a badass in a 40 minute sequence of blood and mind games. Or the emotional 'tug at your heart strings' episode 'The Other Side', which I ranked a 10/10, it hit every note for me perfectly and they couldn't have done a better job with that certain characters death. And then of course there is the finale itself, which I believe to be the shows strongest season finale to date. The finale 'Praimfaya' merges together some of the most intense and satisfying scenes I've witnessed for the show, and actually manages to leave a good handful of questions, making me extremely anticipated to see what they bring to season 5.
The biggest difference I find with season 4 compared to the rest is it didn't seem to focus on Clarke as much, which I thought was a fantastic choice because as I mentioned, it made every character's story exciting. Not that they haven't been before but having less of Clarke gave others more of a chance to develop. This greatest example of this being Octavia, a character who has had the best development since season 1, but for some reason has never clicked with me, until season 4. She's managed to become one of, if not the, strongest characters in the entire show. Every episode she was in she grew on me even more and seeing where they left her off in the finale leads me to believe she'll only get better too. Bellamy is a character I've always liked since season 1, unfortunately they did a terrible job with him in season 3 and completely butchered any development he had. Luckily however, as a fan of Bellamy I was able to find that they managed to redeem him this season and has again fallen back into my 'top 3 characters' list after bringing some of the seasons best stories and more emotional moments. I could go on and on about certain characters but I'll quickly end on Raven, again, one of my favorites the show has and I find Lindsey Morgan to portray her so well i previous seasons and it's no different here. Each scene she owns and is a joy to watch on screen.
All in all, I didn't expect much from season 4 of The 100 going into it, and while it did have some 'slower' moments I found that the stronger ones and the final 5ish episodes heavily outweighed them. With some impressive writing for the characters we love and the best finale the show has offered to us so far. I'll have to rewatch season 2 again but this could be the best season yet which was so unexpected. Very excited to see what they have in store for us in season 5.
