PCs Valentine and Casper arrest a man for being drunk-in-charge. DI Manson and Sgt Doug Wright mount a frantic search for a missing eleven-year-old boy. Sgt Ackland and PC Fletcher attend to an incident of vandalism at Harvey Wallace comprehensive. Ackland's boyfriend is knocked down in a hit-and-run incident.
Meadows leads a briefing and tells the team that the fire at Hendersons' house was an arson attack. Stuart immediately suspects a link between the fire and the hit and run that knocked down June's boyfriend Rod. After applying for the DI position, Sam is thrilled when Jack informs of her successful interview; she is the new DI and will start her new role in a month or so. June is overwhelmed when she visits Rod in hospital and accepts his earlier marriage proposal.
The team are relieved when Cheryl eventually admits to starting the fire at the Henderson’s house, but when Phil and Sam dig a little further into her past, they begin to wonder whether they have really found the Sun Hill arsonist. Elsewhere, Smithy and Lewis are called to a local market where they uncover a scam involving dodgy computer games. Lewis discovers his Gran, who he lives with, is moving to Jamaica to be with his mother, and, Sam announces to Phil and Stuart that she will be the new DI. But how will her ex-lovers take to her being their new boss?
Gina covers for an absent Lewis, and as such, is tasked with patrolling the beat with Roger. Their first case involves a man who has been assaulted and locked in the boot of his car. The chain of events leading to the attack include a rape, a grudge and a string of lies. Elsewhere, on his way into work, Lewis investigates a mugging, and Gina is horrified when she is called to court to give evidence at a hearing, and comes across a very familiar face.
Heaton is astounded when Mia tells him that the local newspaper is running with a ‘possible closure of Sun Hill’ story. Diane and Honey find a woman dead on her sofa, and when they investigate, Mickey and Jo discover that what appears to be a suicide may be a case of murder. Roger and Dan investigate an attack in a local pub, where landlord Vince Morgan suffered a head wound. His attacker is soon identified, but Roger soon begins to realise that Vince is not the honest man he thinks he is.
Zain returns from holiday, with his drugs baron girlfriend, Kristen Shaw, and her business partner gangster, Paul Haskew, in tow. He arrives back at work to find the Serious Organised Crime Agency filling the team in on a new lead in the Colombian drug deal. Realising he has to choose between his job and Kristen, he decides to sell his soul - and now there is no going back. Emma and Will investigate when a man becomes worried after he can't contact his mother. Honey is crushed when Will tells Tony that their relationship was only a bit of fun.
As the Serious Organised Crime Agency begin to question Zain's undercover role with the Colombian gang, drugs mule Eva Garcia contacts her brother, blowing the security of the safe house and putting the detective in great danger from kingpin Alvarez. Honey argues with Will about pressing him to go on holiday together, but before they can sort out their relationship, she answers an emergency call from Eva. Zain attempts to keep in the loop by providing fake information regarding planned decoy drops.
Zain protests his innocence when Paul discovers that he provided his police colleagues with information regarding the decoy drop. In order to avoid police detection, the lorry raid occurs before it reaches the docks, but Kristen struggles to trust Zain when he attempts to show her what he has given up to be with her. Despite everybody believing she is on holiday, Honey has been taken hostage, but manages to anonymously alert her colleagues where the real drop-off is occurring, much to Paul's dismay.
As Jack hands drugs kingpin Jose Alvarez over to the Serious Organised Crime Agency, it looks as if the Sun Hill team have done enough to save the station from closure, but suspicion mounts about Zain's involvement with the Colombian gang. Jack is determined to find out just how much Phil knows about Zain's undercover role, but with Kristen Shaw and Eva Garcia still missing, it takes a while before anyone notices Honey has also disappeared without trace.
Gina reports Honey as a missing person when she fails to report for work, and it's not long before her fingerprints are found at Bonham Wharf, identifying her as the second prisoner at the scene. Zain panics as the net closes on him, but Kristen remains calm and reassures him they can make a clean getaway. Heaton's wife tells him they are through, and Emma finds out just how controlling her new husband, Matt, can be after the pair have a bitter row.
The Sun Hill relief are briefed about Honey's death, and Will is embarrassed to learn her mother wants to meet him, as she has heard so much about him. Zain comes under intense questioning from the Murder Investigation Team, but manages to give Phil and Neil the slip in order to meet up with Kristen and make his escape. It's up to Jack to find him and bring him to justice, but with just about everyone on the Sun Hill relief determined to bring Honey's killer to justice, will Zain manage to evade capture?
A student at Rod's school is reluctant to talk about who wounded him with a knife, but some dogged routine work by Reg and Diane searching through CCTV footage eventually gives the team a lead, linking the incident to the disappearance of a paroled prisoner last seen stealing bandages from a chemist's shop. The sight of Gina in her glad rags prompts June to wish for early retirement - and an early wedding. Gina and Smithy search for an absconded prisoner.
Newly-promoted Sam takes on the outstanding missing-person files, and proposes a press event to stimulate new responses in the Tennant case. The relief are tasked with policing the Aldbourne Estate, which is to be redeveloped despite the objections of some residents. Tony and Reg catch a youth who has been stealing piping from one of the properties, but the developer refuses to press charges. June challenges him over the use of a derelict property as a drugs den. Smithy and Roger arrest a man for reckless driving, but he gives a false identity and is bailed. Sam and Stuart arrange a sting operation to trap him. Smithy is unimpressed when Kezia decides to spring a surprise for his birthday, and decides to end their relationship. June tells Tony and Reg that she has decided to retire.
Sam's memorial initiative on the anniversary of Amy Tennant's disappearance gives the team a lead when a friend of the family is seen stealing something from the missing child's bedroom, and a child's corpse is found buried on an allotment. Emma and Diane investigate an abandoned van and unwittingly set loose a flock of frightened sheep, which turn out to be stolen stock on the way to an illegal slaughterhouse. Matt steps up his campaign to undermine his wife's confidence.
Emma works out that abductor Shelley Fitzgerald is likely to take Amy Tennant to her childhood haunts in Brighton, after the child is captured on CCTV found by Neil and Sam. Lewis is the first to congratulate her for getting the hunt back on track, but husband Matt continues to belittle everything she does. Neil leads the team in a frantic search on the Sussex coast, where an elated James Tennant finally sets eyes on his daughter for the first time in a year. Roger and Dan bring the boyfriend of the suspected abductor in for questioning. Emma has further problems with Matt when he turns violent after a row about a holiday.
Just two days away from retirement, June breaks up a fight between an evicted tenant and a property developer, Brian Stevens, on the Aldbourne Estate, but later finds herself under attack when she and Roger investigate allegations that the developer used bribes to win the tender. The net closes in on Amy Tennant's abductor, but Neil has suspicions that the main suspect may be involved in a much bigger operation. When DAC Hobbs is seen kissing Heaton, June is left not knowing who she can trust.
Sgt Wright supervises the mass eviction of tenants from the Aldbourne Estate, and finds herself having to manage a public order situation. DC Webb traces the driver who ran Sgt Ackland off the road. She and Insp Gold present Supt Heaton with evidence of DAC Hobbs's involvement in the corrupt property development. DS Jim Carver returns to Sun Hill to discuss a case. The station is to survive the forthcoming reorganisation.
Sgt Ackland assists DS Carver on a drugs stakeout. The officers are at loggerheads over their troubled past, and soon find themselves in over their heads. The relief carries out a search of some wasteland following the discovery of a human skeleton.
Sgt Ackland and DS Carver are held hostage by drug dealers. Carver asks Ackland to take him back. Meanwhile, Sun Hill prepares Ackland's leaving party.
PCs Noble and Fletcher attend the scene of a burglary. DS Hunter and DC Masters investigate the assault of a woman running an adult webcam service. DI Nixon sees the chance to put away a villain from her past. Sgt Smith compromises a key witness to the incident. DC Webb and PCs Hinckley and Valentine are assigned to the clean-up of the Jasmine Allen Estate and uncover drug-dealing and joy-riding.
Sgt Smith attends a minor traffic incident and discovers a body in the boot of a car. DCI Meadows and DC Webb lead the manhunt for the suspect, who is armed and blames Smith for ruining his life.
DS Turner and DC Webb investigate an arson attack and suspicious death. Supt Heaton suspects an acquaintance of the deceased, a dangerous psychopath with a history of extortion, and warns his estranged wife to leave London. PCs Hinckley and Fletcher deal with a violent assault case. PCs Hollis and Stamp have to find the key witness when he flees court.
Masters and Hunter investigate the stabbing of a member of the Skens, but when evidence suggests that Hardy's cousin Dominic may be involved, he is forced to bend the rules to help his wayward relative. When it transpires that Dominic owes the victim money, Hardy begins to doubt whether or not he is playing on the right side of the fence. Meanwhile, Noble and Fletcher tail a van reported stolen earlier that morning, but during the pursuit, a young boy is knocked off his bike, and later dies of his injuries in hospital. When they uncover the identity of the driver, they discover a link to Heaton's arch enemy, Ray Moore – and when the driver later disappears, Meadows suspects foul play.
Noble and Keane answer a distress call to the home of Ray Moore and find his ten-year-old daughter, Annie, threatening a youth with a gun. Meanwhile, Heaton suspects that hit-and-run driver Paddy Morgan may have been killed by Moore's henchmen – and that his daughter may have been witness to his death. However, with no body and the only piece of usable evidence corrupted during the earlier armed stand-off, Moore threatens to evade capture again. Meanwhile, Noble and Keane deal with the theft of a pedal bike and criminal damage on a clothes mart – all the hallmarks of an initiation to a long-forgotten local cult known as the 'Canley Crew', who appear to have resurfaced.
Gold finds herself caught in an awkward situation when Peter Harris' wife Mary turns up at the station with a ransom note – claiming that Peter has been kidnapped. Forced to reveal her night of passion to Manson, suspicion immediately falls on another of Peter's lovers, who arrives the scene of the planned drop to collect the ransom money. However, Manson soon realises that the team have been duped, and it's not long before Gold realises who the kidnapper really is. Meanwhile, a youth is badly assaulted on the Larkmead estate, and with a little help from his flatmate's brother, Hardy and Valentine investigate a local youth club owner who they suspect may be responsible for dealing drugs.
Perkins and Masters investigate when a man is found badly beaten in some local woodland, but uncover a strong lead straight from the off when it appears that the perpetrator later made the 999 call which lead officers to the man's location. They discover the victim is an employee of a security firm who has details of a planned delivery of rare and valuable antiques. Meanwhile, Gold, Casper and Hollis investigate a charity scam after one of the donors suffers a heart attack during a botched burglary. However, when they discover that a broken window disguised as the point of entry was actually broken from inside the property, they realise that they may have already found their suspect.
Stuart plays a practical joke on Phil that ruins his investigation into a robbery at a nail bar. When Jack comes across the pair fighting in CID he jumps to the conclusion Phil is the guilty party and would learn more respect for the job by having a spell back on the beat in uniform. Roger is not impressed when Lewis ropes him into laborious paperwork to get some background on the mysterious skull Tash's brother Rudy discovered a few weeks ago, but his hard work discovers a link to a teenage girl who disappeared in the 1980s.
Phil squeezes back into uniform and teams up with Leela to investigate a girl accused of robbing a shop. Mia and John work together on the case of an escaped prisoner who has returned to the area seeking revenge on a local businessman, and after flirting all day, give in to temptation. Heaton denies getting into a clinch with Mia when questioned, but Mickey suspects that something is going on.
CID investigates when a gang of youths carries out a number of audacious daylight robberies, and Emma is stabbed during the undercover operation. Witness Josh makes a startling confession to Nikki, and his behaviour gives her cause for concern. Meanwhile, Mia is awkward with John following the previous night's encounter – and Mickey guesses what went on. Will and Dan arrest a member of a gang of steamers, and Terry and Mickey investigate an assault on the boy's mother. Will hears a shocking secret from Emma's past.
Unlucky in love once more, Mickey thumps Heaton for sleeping with Mia and starts packing his bags – though Jack is determined to save his protégé's career, even if it means crossing swords with the Superintendent. Mickey later investigates the death of a young woman found drowned in a swimming pool. Meanwhile, Emma finally discovers the extent of her husband's psychological bullying when Will puts her in touch with Matt's ex Nina Lloyd. She finally fights back as Matt attacks her once more, but have her deadly actions cost her career?
Heaton briefs Gina and Jo on the alleged events the night before at Emma and Matt Hinckley's home. Will is horrified to learn Matt is pressing for a charge of attempted murder against Emma, and sets out to expose the control freak's vicious bullying tendencies with help from former victim Nina Lloyd. Manson organises a raid on a crack house, with Lewis determined to track down the dealer when he escapes. Lewis enlists the help of the dealer's young runner, but the boy's mother interferes in the case and is put in danger as a result. Meanwhile, Dan takes pity on a drug addict who takes him hostage during the raid, and offers to help her by securing a place on a rehabilitation programme.
Sam, Nikki and Diane deal with a young woman who was pushed from a walkway on the Cole Lane Estate. Sam, Nikki and Smithy are then called to deal with the attempted suicide of the woman's husband. Nikki and Diane are called to a disturbance at her flat the next day, but she has disappeared without trace. Mickey deals with an assault, while Terry, Tony and Dan go undercover to trap a confidence trickster. This episode originally supposed to be broadcast in December 2006, but was cancelled when a mastertape was stolen from the filming studios in November 2006.
After the discovery of Reshna's body the previous day, Sam and Jack wait for the forensic report. They find out that Reshna was strangled before being left in the Thames. In the meantime, Roger and Lewis track down Marcus and take him in for questioning. Marcus is distraught to hear about Reshna's death and as a result, fails to answer any of Jack and Sam's questions. Diane and Mickey's questioning of an alleged mugging victim, Maggie Carpenter, leaves them confused. Smithy tells the officers to go over Maggie's statement again, as he believes her to be more of a drama queen than a victim. Emma is feeling raw after her marital difficulties boiled over into violence and shows her tough side to new recruit Beth Green, as they investigate a woman's claim her baby has been stolen. Terry and Jo lead the search for the missing baby. Jack is anxious to prove he's a worthy DCI and agrees to go undercover with Sam to get a lead on the illegal baby-selling business, but his mistake puts his inexperienced colleague in danger.
Will and Nikki investigate the suspicious death of a child protection officer on the Cheetham estate, after attending a disturbance at a family court. New recruit Beth delivers her first caution following an affray between a car salesman and a woman protesting against the dangers of 4x4 vehicles, but Dan is sure that there's more to the conflict than first meets the eye.
Nikki coaxes a potential suicide victim, Josh Carey down from a factory building and urges him to give information on the child pornography ring he has been invited to join. Reg and Phil are called to a funeral home where a valuable necklace has been taken from a corpse in a sealed coffin. Terry approaches Manson for permission to mount an undercover operation to expose the child-pornography ring that Josh Carey is involved in.
Phil's spell in uniform comes to a triumphant end when he borrows a bike to chase a mugger and recovers £15,000 in cash. The case gets more interesting when the victim admits he is being blackmailed. Heaton reassures terrified prosecution witness Martin Turnbull he will be given protection following threats from Ray Moore, only to discover the villainous ex-cop has subtler ways of intimidating people. Emma and Reg attend the scene of a road traffic accident.
Gang member Wesley Meeks is shot, and his dying words in the ambulance are the name of corrupt ex-policeman Ray Moore. Heaton struggles to find evidence linking the victim with his arch enemy, but Lewis's contacts reveal the red scorpion tag sprayed on all of Moore's properties was Wesley's handiwork. Phil's first day back in plain clothes gets off to a bad start, after he and Stuart interview a young joyrider, and follow up a report that he plans to take part in an armed robbery. Manson tells the warring DSs about a temporary switch with a Specialist Crime Directorate, and Phil can't help but gloat when he gets the secondment.
Lewis's girlfriend nurse Tash Niles is attacked in the hospital car park, raising the terrifying prospect that Ray Moore is targeting people who could testify against him. Diane encounters a pensioner who turns out to be a fan of Reg's podiatry Regflections – and clearly has other guilty secrets to hide – including what appears to be a series of robberies from the homes of other pensioners. Heaton directs a search for further evidence into Ray Moore's activities.
Diane, Will, Dan and Beth attend a road accident, where the victim is found alone in the wreck of her car, but Crime Scene Examiner Lorna Hart is convinced a second person was in the vehicle at the time of the accident. As Rudy's condition deteriorates, Tash finally agrees to testify against Ray Moore, but the case is not moving fast enough for Lewis, who takes matters into his own hands.
As Lewis's fingerprints are found all over the gun next to Ray Moore's body, the young PC heads for the station to make a statement and hand in his warrant card, while Heaton regrets losing the chance to bring his old enemy to justice. New recruit DC Grace Dasari teams up with Mickey to help a woman trace her son, who has been missing for eleven years.
Will and Dan attend to a woman who claims to have been raped – but her plight prompts Jack to reopen a cold case from twenty years previously, with help from an old colleague, DCI Roy Atherton. Emma reveals a maverick streak and puts her career on the line to help a reformed drug addict stay out of jail. Beth and Roger call to enforce an injunction in a domestic dispute and uncover a case of credit card cloning.
Sleeplessness and a taxing workload catch up with Jack, who is lucky to escape from a road accident so bizarre his colleagues begin to suspect he is losing the plot. His protégé Mickey sets out to rescue his boss's reputation and save his career. An explosion in a lock-up on an industrial estate alerts Neil to possible terrorist activity in the manor. Stuart and Grace investigate a possible connection with religious extremism.
Leela and Tony discover the body of a supermodel who had recently fronted an anti-fur campaign despite her lack of real conviction. Lorna notes that the crime scene has been arranged to resemble a shot from the film, suggesting animal rights activists may have resented her hypocrisy. Subsequent investigations reveal a host of rival male admirers with reason to kill her and Terry digs up evidence of a more sinister side to the woman's life – a porn film discovers a porn film, with footage of a missing 15-year-old runaway, at the dead woman's house. Jack prepares to testify against Zain. Stuart makes a move on a forensic examiner.
Known stalker Larry Franks emerges as prime suspect in the Cindy Statham murder case – until CCTV footage reveals the model had a furious row in a restaurant with her half-brother on the day she died. Leela reports an attack by an intruder but she is put in a compromising situation when her colleagues turn up and discover a bag of heroin in her flat. Tony tracks down a man who had been stalking the dead woman, while Jo and Stuart interview the victim's half-brother.
Terry goes undercover, hoping to arrest a supplier of illegally imported goods, but gets caught up in a pub brawl between rival football fans in which a fellow officer, Sgt. Doug Wright, is stabbed. Lewis's inside knowledge is called upon when another spate of gang violence breaks out and the new leader of the Skens appears to be settling old scores. Sam and Kezia investigate an assault victim discovered by Tony and Lewis.
Probationary PCs Sally Armstrong and Billy Rowan arrive at Sun Hill, where the team are anxious to find the man who stabbed Sgt. Doug Wright. The new recruits are puppy-walked by Nikki and Emma, and the foursome get a call to attend a disturbance at a jewellery shop. After a successful result, they are later called on to deal with a report of stone-throwing at an abandoned factory – where Billy Rowan's first day ends up turning into his last.
Fired up by the attack on her husband and the murder of Billy Rowan, Nikki is determined to nail the killer. However, the identity parade proves a disappointment when she fails to pick out Greg Farnham and has to watch as he is set free to pursue his vendetta against the police. Undeterred, Nikki and Sally trail him to a friend's house, where she learns he is in an agitated state of mind – and armed with a knife, and Wright finds herself held hostage by the killer, but ends up going all out to save his life when he locks himself in his deceased daughter's home.
After making a complaint about Gina's bullying behaviour, Emma is embarrassed to find herself working alongside the inspector on a tricky rape allegation in which the evidence does not seem to add up. CID learn of a big drugs deal being arranged in the café where Lewis's cousin works and get ready to swoop – but they are unprepared for what they find when the Sken gang turns up. Lewis and Roger attend to a young boy found collapsed with a bag of ecstasy pills in his pocket. Stuart and Jo uncover the source of the tablets, and a link to the drugs bust.
Lewis sinks deeper into trouble as his undercover operation spins out of control. Following a shoot-out with the East Street gang, he is ordered to act as courier when a hostage is exchanged for a gun the Skens are eager to get their hands on – and finds he is in danger from both sides. Back at the station, Mickey and Kezia work on a case in which explosives have gone missing from a contractor's depot. Roger voices his concern about his partner, but Heaton is too busy preparing for a sting where the Skens are due to buy explosives.
Heaton briefs the team on the Skens' plan to ambush a cash van, but Lewis alerts them to a last-minute change of plan – the stolen explosives are to be used to rescue gang leader Wayne Jackson from a prison vehicle on the courthouse run. A high-speed car chase through the London streets ensues, observed from the air by Jack until the getaway car enters a tunnel. The trail goes cold, leaving Lewis in the hands of the increasingly suspicious gangsters.
A photographer is arrested on suspicion of murdering one of his models. The discovery of a blood-soaked t-shirt at his trashed studio, and the evidence of his own pictures, suggests a second suspect may have delivered the fatal blows to the victim's head. Emma and Beth tangle with a trio of truculent young women whose troubled history of deceit and blackmail leads to violence, putting the young officers in danger. Sally and Reg attend the scene of a suspected assault.
CID officers attend the funeral of murdered supermodel Cindy Statham, only to learn that killer Larry Franks has been transferred to hospital following a suicide bid. When he makes a break for freedom, a frantic search of the building ensues and Beth is first to pick up the trail of blood. Smithy's first day as Acting Inspector goes from bad to worse when he calls in the Firearms Command to sort out a building society robbery by two bungling ex-employees.
Larry Franks withdraws his confession to the murder of supermodel Cindy Statham and Jo reopens the case, convinced they have the wrong man in custody. Crime scene photographer Rachel Inns helps her work late into the night re-examining the evidence. Mickey investigates a smash-and-grab raid on a jewellery shop and ends up arresting an old friend, Mod café owner Jerry Harper, whose daughter owns the scooter used as a getaway vehicle.
Concern grows for Jo's safety when she fails to show up for work and further study of the videotape made by Larry Franks yields vital clues to the killer's identity. A frantic search begins for the missing DC when Beth discovers the evidence Rachel was examining has been stolen from the station store – and the culprit makes a break for freedom carrying a gun and ammunition. As Diane and Will lead the search, Stuart and Grace review her casework hoping for a clue to her whereabouts.
New recruit Sergeant Callum Stone makes an instant impact at Sun Hill by subduing a violent drunk in the station, but his maverick methods instantly alarm Dan and raise Smithy's hackles. Terry, Sam and Kezia trace a series of threatening calls made to elderly women back to a single suspect, a supervisor at a kitchen fitting company, who is less than pleased to be arrested in a lift stalled between floors. Stone investigates the circumstances leading to the collapse of a woman brought in to the station by Dan and Tony.
Following a report of vandalism on a church, Terry finds himself investigating a case of assisted suicide in which conflicting evidence from the grieving family members suggests someone has something to hide. Meanwhile, Beth and Roger are called to a pet shop where the owner has been tied up and several dogs let loose, but it's Sun Hill's own bloodhound Stone who realises there is something more sinister than youthful high-jinks going on – leading to the discovery of an assault at the home of a drug addict.
DS Hunter has just come back from an injury he sustained whilst trying to help DI Nixon. A woman is robbed of her winnings on the way home from a casino, and suspicion soon falls on the barman who called her a taxi – which was driven by his friend. The case against the men grows stronger when it turns out they once before arranged transport for a woman who was attacked, so Emma is sent undercover as a casino punter – only for events to take a surprising turn. Callum and Dan are called to a domestic disturbance, and uncover infidelity and drug use.
An elderly woman with Alzheimer's goes missing with her great-granddaughter. Uniform run the case led by Smith and Stone, with Nixon and Webb covering the CID angles. Fletcher gets his first FLO case, and just as it seems he's doing well, a blood stained blanket appears nearby. The great-grandmother appears on a dual-carriageway but there is no baby in sight. Nixon works on her to find the baby, while Fletcher works on the mother, who is arrested when she claims she got rid of the child. It appears she left her daughter at St. Hugh's, but the great-grandmother did pick her up. Fletcher and Casper find the child, but Stone only acknowledges Fletcher's part in the finding of the baby, and Casper hands in his resignation when he is offered a security job in Ibiza. Meanwhile, Dasari and Hunter help Louis Dreyfuss deal with a man blackmailing his wife.
Neil is badly let down by one of his regular informants when a family jewellers is robbed of half a million pounds' worth of stock and one of the partners is shot in the course of the crime. Phil plays the knight in shining armour for casino owner's wife Monica Dreyfuss when she turns up in custody drunk and unable to pay her restaurant bill. Tony and Will are notified of a kidnapping, and Neil and Jo investigate a link to the high-value robbery from the jewellery store - leading them to suspect it being an inside job.
A worried mother reports her son missing after a night out clubbing, but finds it difficult to accept he is gay when he is found beaten and raped by Reg and Beth, following an assignation with a casual pick-up. Emma and Sally have some success persuading the troubled youngster to unburden himself and Neil jumps to the conclusion the lad's own friends may have had something to do with the attack. Neil arranges a raid on the homes of the two main suspects.
Terry investigates a loan shark accused of using strong-arm tactics to collect the extortionate repayments she demands. Stories about her employing a vicious thug to make acid attacks on the families of debtors prove all too true and Beth finds herself in danger when the ruffian is cornered. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian woman with no passport or visa is taken to hospital following a road accident but runs away before Sally and Tony can get the full story. Neil finds himself under pressure from Heaton to secure results.
Smithy picks up a lead on a drug dealer operating from a burger van and before long Sun Hill's uniform branch are mounting a raid on a cannabis farm - where Diane puts herself in great danger by ignoring Callum's orders. Back at the station, Phil and Stuart muster as much empathy and sensitivity as they can when CID are called on to sort out a love triangle and find a missing bridegroom in time for his wedding. Beth and Tony attend a domestic disturbance.
The body of missing schoolgirl Chloe Parks is found in a derelict hospital building, but Crime Scene Examiner Lorna Hart cannot confirm the cause of death. Stone is called to identify the girl's body. Suspicion immediately falls on the victim's boyfriend, who seems to be responsible for recent changes in her behaviour, but a chilling home video given to the police by a classmate changes the direction of the investigation. While Sam and Smithy investigate the circumstances leading to her death, Will acts as family liason officer.
The evidence of the videotape convinces Karen Parks her husband has been abusing their daughter. CID arrest him on suspicion of murder, but CCTV footage from an off licence provides him with a cast-iron alibi for the time of Chloe's death and he is released without charge. Will's persistence leads to a tense encounter with the family, and Callum resorts to desperate measures to ensure justice is served.
Phil's latest conquest, Monica Dreyfuss, reports a burglary at her home which has left her bruised, shaken and fearing for her life. A series of beatings on a local estate points to a vigilante campaign against trouble-making drug dealers and the case touches a nerve with Will as he struggles to get over Martin Parks' suicide. Will and Leela respond to reports of a disturbance on an estate and find two badly-beaten men in a flat used by drug dealers.
A masked kidnapper threatens to kill Monica if Phil does not return with the money Louis Dreyfuss owes his boss. He is driven to the casino to remove the ransom money from the safe - but stupidly tries to make his escape. Samantha is shocked to learn of his involvement in the case but allows her old partner to carry on with his undercover operation to the point of handing over the money - not realising Phil's philandering ways have made him more than one new enemy.
An abandoned car sends Callum and Will on the trial of a missing woman caught up in a tragic love triangle, in which jealousy has exploded into violence as the aggrieved husband stabs his rival and then threatens to kill himself. Meanwhile, a man trying to obtain his birth certificate at a registry office discovers his identity has been stolen, alerting Sally and Tony to an extensive fraud scam.
Callum briefs the relief on a spate of violent robberies that have occurred in and around the borough. Leela is shocked by Will's tactics when collaring a robbery suspect, and decides to adopt new methods of her own - but her actions do not go unnoticed by Stone. Niiki and Emma attend the scene of a domestic dispute in which a man accuses his wife of having an affair. Sally and Beth attend to the victim of an assault.
Sam investigates the background of an eastern European diplomat accused of a violent assault on a prostitute and learns he could be a murderer. The pressure is on when it emerges the suspect has full diplomatic immunity and is due to be deported within twenty-four hours. Phil and Grace interview a painter, whose valuable nude portrait of an ex-lover has been stolen. Leela accepts a post outside Sun Hill, unaware that her colleague Stone has pulled strings to ease her departure.
Stuart works fast to find the children of separated parents when CCTV footage shows the brother and sister talking to a known paedophile. However, his involvement in their disappearance soon proves to be more than meets the eye. New recruit PC Benjamin Gayle is teamed with Will to investigate an assault on a Polish building worker, and finds himself in a tight spot when the victim's colleagues cut up rough about his fish-poaching activities on the common.
Stuart impresses his Sun Hill colleagues as he makes his debut on television crime show Wanted, hoping to clear up a burglary case during which the victim, lawyer Ian Stroud, suffered a massive heart attack. The public response is overwhelming, leaving the team of Terry, Beth and Ben to pick through a mountain of false leads - including a sighting of a man once defended in court by Stroud who served eight years for a rape he did not commit.
Sally and Emma find a badly beaten woman in possession of a bag full of passports. She claims to be an asylum seeker whose political activist husband was murdered in Zimbabwe. However, when her son is abducted, a completely different story emerges and the race is on to rescue the boy from a violent and vengeful father. Gina discovers a bank robber she believed had died in a bank vault blast years ago is alive and well - and back in the country, forcing her to re-open an investigation into a twenty-year-old bank robbery.
Mickey kisses Sally - strictly in the course of his duties - as they trail bank robber Vince Murray, however, the pair are unable to prevent another robbery. Gina visits his family to find out what he's up to back in England. Meanwhile, the old lag's son, Darren proves to be a chip off the old block, staging a burglary with Ian Forrest's lad Kieran, but it's news to the youngsters that Ian was killed in the bank vault explosion while Vince survived the blast.
When three teenagers collapse after taking uncut cocaine, Diane and Sally are sent to visit the school they all attend. There they break up a fight and further investigations reveal the two girls involved are both caught up in the local drugs scene as suppliers. While they investigate a new supply of pure-grace cocaine, Grace makes a momentous decision about her career, Phil drops a bombshell on his Sun Hill colleagues, and Jo decides to take a new step in her love life.
New recruit PC Nate Roberts, a seasoned professional with an appetite for action and an eye for the ladies, joins his colleagues in crowd control outside a crack den that has been set on fire. Meanwhile, Phil clears his desk and prepares to move on, convinced none of his Sun Hill colleagues except Sam will give him a second thought. Diane is shocked to encounter an old army pal living in a squat with his girlfriend, who has been injured in the crack den fire. She and Callum investigate the pair's involvement in the fire.
A paranoid schizophrenic is the main suspect in the case of a prowler who attacked a woman and then stabbed Reg, who answered the call for help. When Callum and Grace indentify the prime suspect, Neil recognises the man as someone he arrested four years previously, and takes pity on him when it emerges he did not receive appropriate medical help at the time, and has since been victimised by neighbours on his estate.
Schizophrenic Michael Simms threatens Shelley Cooper with a knife and when the woman is later killed, Manson orders CO19 to shoot him, assuming Simms is the culprit. In the subsequent inquiry by the department of professional standards, who also subject other officers in CID to criticism, the DI's judgement is called into question by his own superior officer, and he faces the prospect that his career could be over.
Callum and Diane are called to the scene of a domestic disturbance, only to find Diane's neighbour, who has been knocked unconscious with an iron. It looks as if his wife is escaping from an abusive marriage, but all is not as it seems. Meanwhile, Smithy and Nate answer a call from a man who has been sold fake raffle tickets, but the teenage mum accused of the crime impresses the coppers enough to earn a second chance to sort out her life.
A limo driver of a fading pop star is suspected of raping a student found unconscious in an alley by Reg and Tony. Jo and Sam investigate the circumstances leading up to her rape. Elsewhere, Smithy encounters Leanne Samuels again, when he and Emma are called to disturbance at a mini market - only to learn she has lost her job after taking time off work to look after her teenage daughter's baby, and this time he's determined to make Carly see sense before Social Services take the baby away from her. Stuart prepares to makes a further appearance on a tv crime show.
Questioned for beating up schoolboy Paul Herriot, irate father Bryce Lucas admits to Ben and Mickey he did so because he had been sent a videotape of the boy sexually assaulting his daughter - a pupil at the same school. Further investigation uncovers a cycle of abuse involving the disturbed youngster, but his story doesn't quite add up and there are further shocks in store, even for Sun Hill's most worldy wise officers.
Terry and Jo investigate the serious assult of a man promoting a rock against racism concert. Heaton, anticipating trouble at the concert, has a very public run-in with the local MP, Paul Sagger, who crosses swords in a heated TV interview by fuelling tensions in the local community, in the lead-up to the rock against racism concert.
MP Paul Sagger is exposed as an antiques smuggler who owns artefacts looted from a Baghdad museum, but Manson is unsure of just how he is obtaining the valuables. Officers investigate the double-shooting at the rock against racism concert, and Grace discovers Heaton was one of the intended targets. Jo and Terry uncover a possible connection to the Bulldogs of Patriotism.
Derek Jacobs becomes prime suspect for the rock against racism shootings. Manson leads the investigation into the murder of Abdul Muntqim. The search for the gunman leads to evidence confirming that local MP Paul Sagger is directly involved in the illegal importation of artefacts - and Sagger's partner reveals how he smuggled looted goods into the country in her son's coffin. The case reaches a dramatic climax when the killer turns up unexpectedly at the station.
Stuart's driver Trevor Jones helps CID with useful information about a limousine operator who is rumoured to be supplying cocaine as part of the champagne service. Diane and Will respond to a call regarding a hijacked limousine, and Stuart investigates an assault on the driver's wife. Mickey volunteers to pose as a city banker and gather evidence against the villain, but has a few uncomfortable moments when it becomes clear his cover has been blown.
When Stuart's driver Trevor Jones and a female friend are badly beaten up, the detective sets out to link the attack to a mysterious drug dealer known only as the 'Postman'. Meanwhile, Nate and Ben answer a call to a disturbance at a cafe where a boy has had paint sprayed in his face. The assault has racial overtones and the discovery of narcotics at the scene provides a vital lead for the CID investigation.
Stuart is horrified to discover his trusted driver and friend is the mystery drug dealer the 'Postman', who plans to use him as his inside man at Sun Hill, using incriminating photos and unexplained payments into his bank account to blackmail him. Jo rumbles what is going on, but Stuart's efforts to put matters right just lead to greater danger. A drugs bust is thwarted by a tip-off, and Manson suspects a leak from within the team.
Jo and Mickey set up a sting at a crooked second hand jewelley store, after Nate and Emma receive reports of the store handling stolen goods - and get the shock of their lives when the villains ram raid the front door, determined to recover a camcorder. It transpires the camera contains film of gangster Craig Frances's girlfriend in a compromising situation with another man, and the race is on to find the lovers before Craig does. A con-man running a fake computer repair shop makes a fool of Beth and Diane.

Disgraced detective Zain Nadir is interviewed about drug trafficking in Hayesend Prison, where he is serving ten years for perverting the course of justice, after Callum and Will discover the body of a drug addict recently released from prison. He agrees to help his colleagues infiltrate the gang involved. Jack is not sure whether he can trust his mole and fears the worst when a riot breaks out just as the police move in to arrest the operation's kingpin, Zain's cellmate Jason Forbes, who makes good his escape in the confusion.
Zain gets a frosty reception at the station when Heaton secures his release from prison to help Meadows with the recapture of escaped killer Jason Forbes, and Will can't help taking a swing at the man who callously disposed of Honey's body in a bid to save his own skin. Unsurprisingly, Zain encounters hostility from several of his former colleagues. The pursuit leads to a gunpoint showdown, giving Zain a clear choice between escape and doing the right thing.
New recruit DS Max Carter joins the Sun Hill team from CO19 to investigate a tip-off about an armed cash-in-transit robbery, only to find partner DC Perkins drowning his sorrows after the informant is killed for his pains. PCs Gayle and Armstrong arrest two girls for failing to pay their cab fare, and a catastrophic train of events is unleashed when it emerges they were carrying a deadly cargo smuggled in from Ghana - and their boyfriends want it back.
Sally and Tony are taken as hostages by the gun-men and John and Gina take charge of the situation to evacuate the station when an officer is hit by a bullet. Terry sleeps off his hangover in a cell and finds himself in a waking nightmare, trapped in Sun Hill with two murder suspects, two drug mules in a bad way and a pair of reckless maniacs threatening to kill if they don't get their girlfriends back.
