Kingston Wheelers lay claim to arguably the busiest and most active club in the country, with over 600 members taking part in daily social rides or every competitive event on the cycling calendar. Founded by 6 cyclists in a Kingston cafe back in 1924, the club has grown into a true cycling community. The Kingston Wheelers are hugely active in the cycling community as a whole, hosting many open events from Hill Climbs to road races. Any time you head out into the Surrey lanes you can be sure of seeing a few of their light blue and white jerseys.
Ripcor are not your traditional club in one sense, although the club still have traditional values. Riding for the love of it. Enjoying the exercise and the guilt free beer and cake that it brings. To join the club you should have 3 things. A sense of humour. A burst of speed, to the bar. And a bike. The club is also founded to raise money and awareness for the PACE centre. a school for children with motor disorders such as Cerebral Palsy. To date they have collectively cycled over 30,000 miles and helped raise over £500,000.
Ravensthorpe Cycling Club was founded in 1891, making it one of the oldest in the whole of the UK. It seems fitting then that they’re also the home of one cycling’s oldest living legends, Brian Robinson. Brain still joins the club every Saturday on his e-bike to traverse the beautiful hills of West Yorkshire. The club currently has 150 members and hosts ride on Wednesdays, Saturday, and Sunday. As well as it’s fiercely competitive weekly roller racing league.
Back in the 1930’s racing on the road was illegal. Club founders Percy Stallard and Syd Thompson decided they wouldn’t be told they can’t race their bikes on UK roads any longer. In protest to the National Cyclists Union they founded the Wolverhampton Racing Cycling Club, as the name suggests its purpose was to road race. The first race organised was Llangollen to Wolverhampton, won by club teammate C. J Anslow. Percy and the club can be considered the proud fathers of the modern day British Road race scene.
Maurice Burton set up De Ver Cycling Club in the late 1980’s alongside his shop based in Streatham, London. Maurice was the first black British Champion. Such was the racial prejudice in the sport at the time he was booed as he crossed the line. In spite of inspiring his team to a British record in the team pursuit a year later Maurice was not even considered for that event when the squad was selected for the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Maurice’s vision was to increase the accessibility of the sport to all sections of the community irrespective of race, gender or background. Team De Ver Cycling Club has achieved Maurice’s dream. It has gained a reputation of being an inclusive and welcoming club for everyone whatever their level of ability.
Abergavenny road club are winners of the Welsh Cycling Club of the year 3 years in a row from 2013 to 2015. Since starting with 12 members in 1979 they have developed a cycling community committed to bringing the best out of everyone. They have produced a number of elite riders including World Champions like Becky James and Jess Allen. Steve Lane won Welsh coach of the year in 2013 for his outstanding work with the clubs youth. The club is flourishing every year and now boasts over 300 active members who all enjoy the fantastic routes around the Brecon Beacons.
