The Crossing: Season 1

1x01 Pilot

Judging from the pilot alone, which is dangerously unreliable, this series shows real promise. It maintains a careful, even tone which doesn't broadcast future intentions by pre-defining the good vs. bad sides and, indeed, hints that it may actually evolve into a thoughtful exploration of the allegorical themes ... human migration, refugees, government secrecy and malfeasance, and the complicated nature of human ethics. Steve Zhan -- generally a comic actor -- plays it more or less straight as the highly likable local sheriff trying to establish a relationship with Homeland Security investigating a truly bizarre and heartbreaking local event. The "refugees" who survived the titular Crossing are seemingly benign and sympathetic, although they are complex and possibly unpredictable in very human ways. There's nothing intentionally vague or confusing about the plot events as they are depicted and, yet, we're left at the end of the pilot with no sense of certainty as to where this is all going. I'm looking forward to watching the story unfold.

Interesting concept; great start. I'm fully on board for the ride to see where this is going.

Not a bad pilot episode. Athough so far the plot has been a bit predictable, it is nevertheless interesting to see how the future and present collides.
