I'm really disappointed with this. The TV promos looked so promising. Then I discovered it is a North American remake of one of my Top Twenty Favourite TV series, the British (ITV) SCOTT & BAILEY. Both pluses, so my expectations were high. But this series just isn't making a successful transition across the pond. S & B is a brilliant police procedural that is imbedded in the British police structure which has no semblance to the North American police ranking and investigative structure. S & B revolves around the personalities, relationships and behaviours of three strong women, brilliant in their jobs, played by three exceptional actresses. Although the casting for this remake has potential, the performances are rushed, ragged and not allowed to breath and the interpersonal brusqueness between the layers of command which would make sense in it's British culture don't translate to professional expectations in our culture (especially Canadian normative relational values). So far, the North American rewrite has failed in cultural adaptation, in developing characters that the actresses could grow into and to whom we could become attached, or in adapting the plot lines to fit the realities of our policing, communities and personalities. After watching the first episode I give this series a 4 (bad) out of 10, but, I will continue to watch (and support this Canadian production), and reconsider my rating if it gets better. [Crime Procedural Drama]
After finishing the first season, my rating is a 5 (meh) out of 10, although the last episode (S1 E10) was a 7 (good) out of 10. The directing of this series never allowed the characters to breath and become fully embodied although it is the quality of the acting that is to credit for the rise in my rating.
But, really, if you haven't done so already, give yourself a treat and watch the original, SCOTT & BAILEY.
Well, the first episode ist almost a total copycat of the first episode of Scott & Bailey. Married guy with children.... Let's see how it will progress.
