Amazing Amazing Acting across the board. The plot and characters is so moving and powerful that it reminds me of The Wire. James and Maggie were Fantastic.. there best work ever. Definitely needs more following.
Can't wait for the next season.

The best way that I can describe this show is that it is a more mature and advanced version of The Wire. While that show certainly had higher highs this show was consistently good from beginning to end and actually got better from one season to the next. And unlike The Wire it knew when its ending was and was able to finish the final season appropriately. The backdrop and the stories are fantastic. The finale..... one of the top 5 in the history of television. I loved it and will miss it terribly.

This is another masterpiece from the hands of David Simon. As always you get a lovely and very evocative description of the context in which the plot is laid out. The acting is great and the series raises serious questions about prostitution, porn and the HIV AIDS epidemic in a very thoughtful way that points to the problems of these issues without being overtly moralistic about it. The series is highly recommended if you are interested in these topics, in the 70's or 80's and if you like the works of David Simon.

Everyone already discussed the great writing, acting, etc., but it also has a fantastic collection of soundtracks. Gonna miss this show when it's over.

I went into this series knowing very little. I knew it was a period piece, set in the 70's. It had James Franco, and it was set in NYC. Everything else I learned as I went. The initial "hit" of the show was seeing how much was centered on prostitution. Halfway through the season I made the connection that one of the creators also worked on The Wire and Treme. Once this connection was made, I really started to see similarities in written dialog among groups. Overall, I really enjoyed it. The show had a way of making the viewer connected to the characters. The characters lived their lifes, and it unfolded in a way that didn't seem scripted. It just progressed forward. There was no bad guy they were trying to chase, or stop. Rather, they were just living. It's because of this, that I look forward to the next season.

oh.

P.S

Maggie Gyllenhaal. You nailed this role. That wig ..

A really good show that cannot be binge watched. You have to watch one episode and take a few days until you watch another as this is not easy viewing. The episodes are dense and long so when you sit down you better grab your coffee and a light snack cause it’s gonna be a ride for sure.

Take The Wire, add a dash of Deadwood, a hint of The Sopranos and mix it with Taxi Driver, and you have The Deuce.

That's a rather simplistic way of summarising the series but it's practically correct.

I put this show off for years because I feared more than anything that it would merely be a 70s retro fetishistic event, but after a few episodes the 70s window dressing vanishes and you're simply living besides these character's lives. By Season 2 and 3, the scope broadens to encompass the golden age of porn and the efforts to gentrify midtown Manhattan, and much like The Wire you realise, as cliched as it sounds, that, true to its title, you're not watching a show about characters but a show where the city (and in this case, a certain time in the history of the city) is the character. It almost felt criminal that it had to end and not continue on for another two seasons ago and evaluate crime and crime-fighting in New York City into the 1990s and 2000s. I wish this show, even with new characters, could have gone on longer.

I still do not understand why Lori committed suicide.

The writing and characters are very good (lots of character development), however it would have benefited from taking place in LA much like the films Hardcore, Boogie Nights and 8mm. The setting of NYC isn't very interesting. The cast is good. Will be following the show.
