[4.4/10] Sigh. Here we go again. Let’s focus on the good stuff.
The Kevin/Andre story is pretty okay! Something about Andre pretending he can’t see, and Kevin totally calling his bluff, is pretty amusing. It’s the usual bits with the guys messing with one another, but for once it feels deserved on both sides. Of all things, Andre having to see Rafi’s “BDE” feels like some good karmic comeuppance.
But man, even Rafi felt off in this one. Maybe I’m just getting inured to the same schtick over and over again, and Jason Mantzoukas can still make things funny with his delivery alone. Still, Rafi’s material might be getting dumber, if that’s even possible.
Which leads to the doldrums. Why we need to trot Bobby Lee out to play a mentally disabled person is beyond me. The character is insulting, unfunny, and the old kung fu movie fight with Rafi is just garbage.
The same goes for Jenny’s story about having to make lo mein for Ellie’s class after lying to her for years about it being homemade rather than store bought. It’s another generic sitcom plot, but has at least some mileage from Jenny struggling with the problem. But then, Jenny implausibly uses pot as a spice and somehow doesn't realize, and of course the elementary school kids instantly react as if they’re on LSD. It’s cheesy, cartoony nonsense.
But the true nadir of the episode is Pete developing a fetish for his girlfriend having seizures during sex which....I just don’t know what to do with. I guess him getting a seizure himself thanks to Rafi’s “mints” is some comeuppance, but it’s more broad, crass-for-crass-sake humor has nothing clever about it.
Overall, maybe the show is getting worse in its later seasons, or maybe I’m just losing my patience with it.
