Great show, great acting performances, I'll miss it.
A fantastic different show.
One of the most amazing shows I've ever seen.
Really good if you don't focus on "What Happened".
great ending. Not at all what I expected but great none the less. One of my top 10 shows of all time.
Put simply, one of the finest TV shows ever made, up there with The Wire and Breaking Bad. The Leftovers is far more than its mystery, it's about its characters and how they react to this new world and the changes brought before them. It's not about delving into ideas of why the event happened, it's about people that were already broken before it, and how disaster brought that into the light. I don't want to get too much into what makes the show great, because that would be spoiling it. You just need to know that if you want to go into The Leftovers hoping to have a Lost style mystery, in the hopes that everything will be revealed in time, then you should probably alter your expectations or watch Lost again. This is about the people, and that's what makes it truly great.
The Leftovers will make you laugh, it will make you cry (oh boy, will it make you cry) and it will make you happy that someone even attempted to make a show so bold, ambitious and complete, that you will never forget. It was criminally underwatched when it was airing, but now you can watch the whole thing. Do yourself a favour and watch every minute of this masterpiece.
What a beautiful mindfuck!!!! Love it!!!!

I've enjoyed it so far. I am really hoping they don't pull a "Lost" because the show has a lot of potential. The variations of piano music played throughout the episode is extremely well done. Liv Tyler is surprisingly good as well.
In love with this show :orange_heart:
Great series. One of the few in the last couple of years. I have the feeling that the quality of tv shows has been declining for some years. And seeing one of the excellent ones ending is pretty sad.
I loved its mood and spiritual creativity from the beginning and it got better from season to season. Honestly I didn't expect it to come to such a great ending but I was pleasantly surprised and loved the last couple of episodes. I loved the characters and felt with them.
The fact that there are a many negative comments here is a sign of quality with a show like that. It's not for everyone. But if you're brave enough to let the show's confusion and themes of uncertainty into your brain you'll be rewarded.
Yup a bit messy even for a pilot.
I'll give a go one or two episodes more
I watched the first season when it aired, and thought it was a muddled mess, but based on the recommendation of friends I gave it another try, and I'm so glad I did. Season 2 the show really starts to find its footing, and pace. Another commenter mentioned the "trendy ending that doesn't answer any questions"; to that I have to say what more questions could you possibly want answered? I thought the "ending was BRILLIANT".
The entire show is about the extremes that humans will go to assign meaning to random events. There is no providence, there is no master plan, there is no destiny, and if you believe otherwise, then yes, you WILL be disappointed in this series. In the end this show is about the human mind and how it is so very fragile and so fallible; yet it shapes the world around us, and more importantly shapes those around us. We must be careful with sharing our beliefs, because they are contagious, yet in the end my amount to nothing.
One of the best shows I've ever seen! It's completely different from everything else I've watched, hard to describe. You might need to give it some time to get into it. Especially season 2 and 3 are outstanding. And the soundtrack, amazing!
If it wasn't the best show I have ever watched.
It's definitely the best Tv Show I have ever seen !! It's fascinating bu also confused, many feelings about this Tv Show. The actors are really great, they are really convincing. Thank you HBO, Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta !!!
À SLAP !! Very good show !
The. Best. Show. Ever. Made.
One of the greatest shows ever made. It's a shame that people need to be spoonfed subtext and themes to understand the point of the show.
Best show and best soundtrack ever.
What a trash series! I don't believe I just watched three entire seasons, just to finish without a decent explanation! A completely lost of time.
Heartbreaking, brilliantly acted, directed, scored and written show about loss and living.
The second series is top top quality. I really do not understand all the negative comments about this show, the acting is really good, the story interesting, the narrative compelling, I can't find a negative. It should be a criminal offence if HBO do not make at least one more series, to wrap it up.
i'm curious why this is so highly rated...? i watched it a few years ago and was like "whatever, i guess it's got some emotion-inducing stuff." but then i rewatched and felt myself cringing at the fact that i wasn't cringing the first time i watched this lol. maybe max richter's original compositions for the show distracted me (though they were way overused)
i'm especially confused as to why the episode "international assassin" is the highest rated episode of the series on IMDB?? that's the episode that gave me the most eyerolls for non-religious related reasons lmao, even my first watch through
i've watched a lot of tv, and i enjoy most of it because i can find genuine enjoyment out of "bad tv" too. but this just gave me too much second-hand embarrassment. i mean, the promo posters alone..
i do see where some people might get enjoyment from watching the show, so no judgement or whatever
I just started season 3. Was expecting a turn for the better. Had suspicions as early as season 2 that this was going to be a crappy religious sham story. This better not going to be some Christian savior BS show. We will have judgement day at the end of the show. 7 episodes to go.
Seriously what did I just watch.. can't believe people are recommending it to those who liked Lost.
The only thing good about this was the actors, they did an amazing job, especially the protagonist.
The premise is interesting but it only manages to keep you engaged for the first episode, other than that the plot is all over the place, just a bunch of crazy people doing crazy things, and the pacing is terrible.
This must be one of the most intense and intriguing series I have ever watched. Season 1 punches you in the face emotionally with the portrayal of the loses that the 98% leftovers feel in the wake of the departed. And the remaining two seasons tells a very intriguing story that is nicely wrapped up in season 3. There are many unanswered questions but that is true of many great novels and this is what The Leftovers is most easily compared to. The acting is wonderful with Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon easily taking the prize for the most compelling acting. Its just a completely wonderful series.
Very Bad Beginning,
mediocre middle,
the worst ending i have ever seen - skipped through half the finale...
Save your time and watch something else...
overrated show and colossal waste of time. Folks say serial finale was the best, but I'd say it was the worst ever. Even worst than infamous Lost..
I'm not sure I agree with all the 10s. Thought I'd find something far more compelling than what I got. It's not bad by any means and I enjoyed the show all the way through. Does it answer all the questions you have? Not really. But some of the answers don't really matter anyway and I didn't really care about them anyhow
But it's still not something I would really care to watch or recommend particularly. It's a love story at its core. Almost everything else is merely set dressing even if it's quite compelling. The mystery pulls you through but ultimately, I don't think I liked some of the characters enough to care about what they wanted or went through. Especially in the first season, almost every character is decidedly unlikeable and even by the final season, some of them remain quite selfish and arrogant. I don't mind the ending but the off-screen resolutions to most of the characters felt throwaway. I wish we'd got more at the end with everyone involved rather than just two of the characters cause even if they're unlikeable, I was still compelled to see their journeys
Not sure I liked this show as much as everyone else did but you don't have to believe me
i like the story and the twists but the soundtracks are the worst
This show was fun to watch. I sometimes think of watching it again.
Fantastic storytelling, gripping performances, fascinating concept. When I first read this show's description, I thought it was just going to be a generic show similar to the likes of 'The Returned' and other shows that deal with people disappearing/returning unexpectedly. These presumptions put me off watching this show for far too long. Now that I've finished it, I only wish I had watched it immediately after hearing about it.
I'll admit, I was a bit iffy about season 1. I spent most of the season tuning in and out, as I found Laurie's story to be annoying and I didn't like what was going on with Tom either. I was also trying to make up my mind if I liked what the show was trying to do or not. The stuff with Patty following Kevin around was weird at first and I wasn't a fan, but eventually, I started to really enjoy it. But once we got to the end of the season and then on to season 2... I just couldn't stop watching. Season 2 is easily one of the best seasons of television I've ever seen, it's fantastic. Season 3 I felt was a bit of a letdown at times, but overall was still very good, and the finale was as good as we were ever gonna get for this show, answering just the right amount of questions while leaving us pondering over others.
The performances in this show really cannot be applauded enough, especially the performance from Carrie Coon as Nora Durst. The characters in this show are all flawed and deeply complex, and their stories are almost all beautifully told. The direction in this show is also fantastic, and the use of music as an emotive tool is some of the best I've ever experienced. There were times where music would play and it would get me hyped up, and others where the music on its own almost brought tears to my eyes.
This show definitely has its issues. There are some low points with certain characters getting more screentime than I'd have liked (mainly during the first season), but overall, I cannot recommend this show enough. It's not the usual crap, and it does what it does very well. Episode 8 of season 2 is such a bizarre, bold episode, and it might be one of my favourite hours of TV ever. This show takes lots of risks, and I believe that those risks pay off well for the most part. The show's length is also perfect. There are so many shows that go on and on, season after season, and they diminish in quality as they go on. Networks enjoy milking the popular series to get all they can out of them. The Leftovers does not have this issue, and it ends at a perfect point. It's neither too long nor too short. It's not daunting for a new viewer to approach, because the seasons aren't overly long, and there's only 3 to get through. Yet at the same time, you don't have to worry about getting attached to the show only for it to end/be cancelled after it just gets going.
Season 1: 7.5/10
Season 2: 9.5/10
Season 3: 8.5/10
Overall: 9/10
WORTH WATCHING! STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!
This is possibly the best show I’ve ever seen in terms of cinematography, soundtrack, narrative, writing and character development. Not a light show at all, The Leftovers explores human fragility and the overcoming of grief. The plot of the show is the mystery surrounding the great disappearance - the vanishing of 2% of the worlds population. However, this is not the focus of the story. Very Hegelian in its ending, the show explores the various ways through which humans try and often fail to overcome trauma through the use of a small town of characters.
Season 1 is a bit of a rough start. Clearly the show-writers were trying to find their feet and an interesting premise is undermined by a mismatched thread of plot lines that leave you wanting more. Stick with it though. Season 2 is a remarkable improvement and Season 3 is the only season of a show to-date that I have given a 10/10. Ending a tv show is difficult - just look at Game of Thrones - but it is even more difficult when that show centres around a mystery. As Lindelof found out with Lost, a show needs to have a satisfying enough ending that the viewer is doesn’t want more answers but also is not left with an anti-climax. The Leftovers deals with the ending impeccably and this alone places it among the greatest of TV shows ever made.
An all-timer show, tears are still streaming down my face as I type this out. Never before has a TV show forced me to confront the concept of faith as much as this. Absolutely amazing stuff here.
I understood nothing of this show, I like some of the conversations, I do not agree with the assumption that no way can get better and even if the show comes down on religious extremism they end up doing the opposite in the third season.
Considering that the show starts with the trope of "a part of the population goes missing" and it develops from there, I can't really say after watching all 3 seasons that I don't know how they go missing, why they go missing and even if they are dead. The third season was the weirder of them all to me. And besides the ending, all characters end up a fuck up and by that I mean they don't get better at all.
The conversations and talks about grief got me interested, the character development is nice, and acting is really good. Especially Matt who made such a poor job with as a Doctor Who protagonist and the main villain of Thor 2.
And the religious aspect of the show got really confusing because I can't say if it is all real, if they are hallucinating it all or that whatever.
Huge let down, looked a really good series but it's far from it.
One of the best shows I have ever seen
Man I'm so chilled for this coming back.
Like almost every good, deep and thoughtful show it takes time and patience to have an emotional impect.
You people have no attention span.
This is a show that feels like a fever dream.
The Leftovers is one of HBO's best works from its wonderful introduction (first season) to the exploration of the loss and humanity of its characters, a series that takes risks with a different proposal. Unclassifiable and undervalued.
<>.
(david Foster Wallace)
definitely the best show ive ever seen
Should of been a blockbuster series but it's just a huge blockbuster flop.
I just finished season one of three, and have been told season 2 is better yet. This story, from the creators of LOST, is a slow burn, so commit to the long haul. Before I began watching, I read the viewers feedback comments, and the best advice was, forget about what happened, or the why or how of it. Those who wanted those questions answered hated the series, those who invested in the story curve of the characters, and how they chose to repond, discover the appeal of the series, and gave it rave reviews. I settled in to giving it an 8.5 out of 10, with a 10 for the penultimate episode (1.9) and a 9.5 for the season finale. What I enjoyed was the performances. This has a stellar cast, with some promising newcomers. Carrie Coon was a new name to me, but attracked awards for her work in the series.
Until the episode "International Assassin" I hadn't decided where to sit with this show. It was certainly "different" in a not annoying or tacky way, but I felt the inspiration perhaps too on the nose. And here I find my empty derivative floosy opinion spiraling away on the quiet poignant poise of putting something so sweetly on your nose.
Un petit chef d'œuvre cette série ! Le thème musical est un bijou. Bravo encore à HBO
Underrated series. This is just amazing. Season 2 is a blast!
To those on the fence, and those who have given up hope. This show has many lessons for you. It takes patience, but pays in dividends.
This show has the best soundtrack of any show I've ever watched, whoever is in charge of selecting music for the episodes needs a huge raise! Every single episode has at least one great song (not including either season 1 or 2's themes, both fantastic) per episode!
Probably one of the best shows I have ever watched. And can't believe I took this long to watch it
Very annoying color grading. The layer of mystery in plot is sometimes too much and it becomes cringy christian-show like. Anyway it's a very interesing show. Worth watching, I think
My favourite show of all time.
I love the first episode. I think this show has a lot of promise.
really enjoying this, its a change from the usual formula most shows follow i just hope hbo doesnt bin it because of the "boring as hell crowd"
There are many fine actors in this show which was the reason we started watching it. But it is so dismal. Waiting for something, anything, to happen and nothing does. Will watch the final episode this week and that might be the last for us.
People need to give this show a chance, but of course that won't happen. I just hope HBO does.
it's like a christian twin peaks
This is an incredible show, and my current favorite of the ones airing right now.
Who don't knows what will be left behind will never get true plot of the show. It's not about what is said, it's about it isn't. The whole world is the Remnant (or leftovers in a dog bag), only on the Guilt Remnant the caos make sense.
Wow, this show is just the pits
Re-watching this series and knowing how it ends, it’s more appropriate, perhaps, to describe how I recall feeling after first watching this episode air...or even how I imagine first-time-viewers may feel heading towards the series finale. So I’ll leave this Weldon Keys poem:
—
No butler, no second maid, no blood upon the stair.
No eccentric aunt, no gardener, no family friend
Smiling among the bric-a-brac and murder.
Only a suburban house with the front door open
And a dog barking at a squirrel, and the cars Passing.
The corpse quite dead. The wife in Florida.
Consider the clues: the potato masher in a vase,
The torn photograph of a Wesleyan basketball team,
Scattered with check stubs in the hall;
The unsent fan letter to Shirley Temple,
The Hoover button on the lapel of the deceased,
The note: “To be killed this way is quite all right with me.”
Small wonder that the case remains unsolved,
Or that the sleuth, Le Roux, is now incurably insane,
And sits alone in a white room in a white gown,
Screaming that all the world is mad, that clues
Lead nowhere, or to walls so high their tops
cannot be seen;
Screaming all day of war, screaming that
nothing can be solved.” –– Weldon Keys
S02E08 – “International Assassin” -- When it first aired on HBO just a few years ago, this episode was immediately praised by its modest — yet fervent — fans & critics alike. Touted as the best hour of The Leftovers, which is no small achievement given the tightrope walk the narrative’s format had to perfectly navigate. Of course with the gift of hindsight, it’s easy to look back at this episode as “just par for the course,” since every episode of the final (3rd) season doubled down on this one’s morally nuanced & fearlessly unconventional approach to storytelling. But “International Assassin” shouldn’t be retroactively re-graded just because the final season of this criminally-underrated TV series served up nothing but curvebusters. In fact, The Leftovers was always special, and I have no doubt that future audiences find this stellar series and share my sentiment; while Season 01 proved to be a worthy meditation on how our society faces — or in some cases aggressively avoids facing — grief, trauma, loss, and isolation, Season 02 takes off with such a drastically advanced setting & tone that it almost leaves viewers whiplashed (in the best way), where it breaks through the ceiling and into lower earth orbit with S02E08...and everything that follows in the remaining Season 02 and all of Season 03 is nothing short of auteur television. While the world was so caught up in Breaking Bad’s ending, or Game of Thrones best seasons — a little series called The Leftovers left an indelible mark on television history, one that deserves to be mentioned among the likes of The Wire, The Americans, and Deadwood.
Considering the high ratings of some reviewers - I persisted.
But a messy plot (albeit with strong sub-stories) combined with the trendy ending that doesn't answer any questions means I won't be investing more time in this series. Disappointing.
I slogged through the first season, but couldn’t go farther, being constantly triggered by the apparent inability of the writers to have a line without “f_____”
Fuck yes, HBO renewed The Leftovers for a 2nd season!
The writing and performances were top notch. The choice of songs were brilliant as well. The score by Max Richter is terrific which is a huge plus. The show is about how the characters are dealing with the unexplainable tragedy rather than how it happened or why. So if you're interested only in how or why, then you'll be disappointed or even frustrated. If you want a character driven show and watch how these people are doing, you'll love this. Easily the best new drama of this year IMO. So glad it's coming back next year.
I didn't got the story at all, it just seemed all really messy.
I love the show so far ,though too gloomy sometimes ! The acting "Justin Theroux" is superb in my opinion , also the story lines are entertaining and well written.
Epic Show with an amazing finale
At first I thought that was Leighton Meester, but it's someone else!
Boring as hell! I'll give it a couple more episodes to redeem itself, then it will be a farewell.
I gave this show a shot, after 2 episodes it failed to hook me.. maybe it gets better but i don't see why i should force myself in to it
I found the pilot icky enough to decide not to watch any more.
Suffered through all 3 seasons - should've given up after the 2nd or 3rd episode in season 1. A part of my life I'll never get back!
Such a poorly paced show which seems pointless. I doubt the world would ever react that way, and those GR guys would get punched a whole lot more!!!
Boring as hell
just let the mystery be
Another waste of time. The storyline was all over the place making it difficult to follow. Truth be told, I had my doubts, and I should have followed them.
I have seen two episodes and I don't understand where the plot is going, I'll stick for a few more just because I'm intrigued.
dont know why this show is getting so much hate...2 episodes in I am really enjoying...yes it is weird but cant wait to see where the storyline goes

Heh its from the creator of Lost.. So without even watching it I know it's gonna suck ! Don't wanna see another show only filled with flashbacks and cliffhangers but no good story.

words cannot describe how much i love this show, it's perfect in every single way, and it had a fantastic ending
