The spirit of Christmas is evoked in this special edition of the magic show which conjures up nostalgic images as a backdrop for illusions, including one featuring Debbie McGee in Beauty and the Beast.

1986 Christmas Show - Special guests: Harry Blackstone Jr., Ronn Lucas, Antonio Diavolo, Ron Moody, Pamela Armstring, Anita Dobson, Gorden Kaye, Desmond Lynam, Ruth Madoc, Gary Wilmot

This show won the Golden Rose of Montreux award for TV light entertainment. Its big finale was a circus-themed production number complete with elephant, horse, human cannonball, clowns and dancers. And Daniels sings... The guests are juggling troupe Air Jazz, the Twycross Chimps, and Tom Noddy, who does startling things with soap bubbles: The Lovely Debbie McGee is also present, but not as prominently as she would later be.

The show opens with Paul having fun with broadcasters Michael Buerk, Adam Rafael, Richard Whitmore and John Craven, complete with milk maid, Debbie McGee. The Korean Brave Seamen Troupe are next up to entertain with an incredible display of strength and balance. Then it's over to a cute car wash for some levitation before the second guest act is introduced. Paul Daniels was well known for bringing unusual, international performers to Britain during his television heyday, and whilst Philippe Genty's sombre clown marionette routine is certainly original and begins intriguingly, it ultimately leaves one wishing there was more to it. Next guest, Argentine magician Rene Lavand, although speaking very little English, very proudly proclaims, "It can't be made slower...." and quite rightly too as despite being one handed, shows complete mastery of the card deck, even having his own slick shuffling technique. The final illusion is left to the host, where he disappears a pantomime horse, with a twist!

[Tina Lenert - Mime Artist / Marcus Heavy Weight Juggler] Paul begins with an illusion whereby he provides alternative sources for various utilities, and in 'Under Laboratory Conditions' he appears to link two card frames, with close scrutiny. The first of his guest acts this week is the charming and original Tina Lenert, who combines magic and mime. At the 'Ballyhoo Corner' Paul displays more card wizardry, before introducing the second of tonight's guests, Marcus. In ancient Greek or Roman attire he manipulates steel balls and missiles which Paul assures the audience are extremely heavy, and hit the studio floor with a satisfying thud. Paul's finale is an amusing routine where he chomps his way through a range of comestibles and seems to teleport a fiver. They are still around of course, but the references to pound notes will raise a smile for those who remember.

[Hans Moretti / Johnny Paul Vegas Table Top Magic] Paul begins with a Chinese anecdote that leads to some rope and silk tricks. In 'Under Laboratory Conditions' he demonstrates the illusion of telekinesis. The first of this week's guests is Johnny Paul, a Las Vegas 'table top' magician full of gags, who Paul clearly admired. Members of the audience are then conned out of a prize teddy bear in 'Ballyhoo Corner', leading into the second guest, old favourite, Hans Moretti, who demonstrates mastery of the sword. The final illusion this week sees Paul appearing to turn back time.

[Billy McComb / Crazy Monroe / Katja Nick / Jack Grossman] Paul begins by filling a vase with smoke, in the tradition of Chinese magicians. This leads into an interview with Chung Ling Soo's aide, Jack Grossman, and they talk about the revered magician and the circumstances regarding his tragic death. Crazy Monroe is introduced next, and he displays some seemingly impossible balancing feats. Paul's next trick is to choose which glasses of water have been polluted under the watchful eye of an audience member 'Under Laboratory Conditions.' Another of Paul's favourites, Billy McComb, is up next, and he has fun with holes. The curiosity at 'Ballyhoo Corner' this week is Germany's Katja Nick, who has the ability to speak and sing backwards! Returning to the theme at the beginning of the show, and with the help of Jack Grossman who was with Chung Ling Soo the night he died, Paul respectfully re enacts the illusion of catching a bullet.

[Jean-Claude / Trevor Brooking / Omar Pasha] In Derren Brown-esque fashion, Paul identifies audience members by their handshakes after going through a lengthy, humorous blindfolding process. This week's 'Under Laboratory Conditions' experiment involves twins picking out cards from seemingly ordinary mixed decks. Then it's time for the first guest act this week, in which Jean-Claude displays incredible balancing skills with footballs, aided by two amusing little soccer players! He also more than meets a light-hearted challenge from English footballing legend Trevor Brooking. With "The Lovely Debbie McGee" providing assistance in nurse uniform, Paul's 'Ballyhoo Corner' trick is little more than a sight gag, where an audience member ages before your very eyes! Tonight's second guest act is Omar Pasha. Using black art with visually stunning effect, he performs many illusions to a beautiful 'Bolero' soundtrack. Paul finishes the show by passing through a huge china mug stacked pyramid, having debunked the obvious 'identical twins' explanation.

The last of the present series in which Paul entertains in his own special fashion and introduces his international guests. From America Lance Burton, the current world champion of manipulation, and ventriloquist Carl Garray with an act of surprises. Special guest appearance by Eric Bristow.

[Norm Nielsen / Bernie Winters / Samson - Strongman] This episode starts with Paul generating plenty of laughter with an audience member and a couple of unpredictable beer bottles. In the 'Under Laboratory Conditions' slot, some plasticine is sliced without any physical contact, and then tonight's first guest, strongman Samson, is introduced. When he's not thumping nails into wood with his bare hand or pulling them out with his teeth, he is able to hold his own in a tug of war with several men pulling at him from both sides. Paul narrates a story about three bears whilst performing a rope trick, before Norm Nielsen takes to the stage. This magician is absolutely superb and it's stunning to see him produce what seems like infinite amounts of cards and coins out of nowhere during his spectacular routine. Back to the host again for the final illusion, where a volunteer's watch is destroyed only to be restored again, with the help of a Saint Bernard dog that turns out to be Schnorbitz belonging to Bernie Winters!

[George Schlick / Richard Stilgoe / Geoff Hoyle] Paul starts the show with his usual mirth, appearing to pass a flaming poker through someone's arm. This week's 'Bunco Booth' section involves a nobbled bike of the type seen at fetes, and then it's back to the host, this time performing a trick with some old magic props from his collection. A character named Mr. Sniff continually sabotages Paul's 'Triple Trunk Mystery' before tonight's guest act, George Schlick, is introduced. A very clever and technically superb performance is provided by the ventriloquist, and then it's time for the final illusion. An apparently random Scrabble word created by broadcaster, lyricist, knight and all round wordsmith, Richard Stilgoe is reproduced on what was a blank blackboard, as audience members look on.

[Bob Munden - Fast Draw / Sylvia Théron - Balancing] Paul begins the show with some basic magic tricks but with his usual jovial banter added in. Next, he manages to synchronise watches 'Under Laboratory Conditions' before the first guest act, Sylvia Théron shows off her excellent balancing skills. In a gambling saloon setting, the host talks about the circumstances regarding the death of Wild Bill Hicock, with a card trick to suit. The second guest act, fast draw expert, Bob Munden is introduced and displays his extraordinary speed with a pistol. A couple from the audience are subjected to an enjoyable final illusion from the host, involving a lethal blade.

[The Segura Family - Acrobats / Max Maven / Norman Collier] Paul starts the show with a couple of tricks - a petal becomes an egg and baby toys swap their noises. The first guest act is introduced, and they are the Segura family demonstrating their remarkable acrobatics. In the 'Bunco Booth' section a lady is challenged to a light-hearted game of strip poker. The Dracula-esque Max Maven is the second guest act tonight and in his performance he appears to state which randomly chosen cities two audience members are thinking of. Back to the host for the show's finale where he generates plenty of laughter as volunteers become part of an omelette production line! Norman 'faulty microphone' Collier makes a very welcome but unfortunately all too short appearance.

This week Paul attempts the most sensational vanishing trick of his career and introduces his special guests from Germany: the celebrated showman illusionist Hans Moretti featuring a death-defying escape on a burning rope, and his son Peter Moretti presenting archery like you have never seen before. With The Super Tells.

This week Paul demonstrates how a magician copes with an accident, takes things easy in a magical way for the last show of the series and introduces his special guests. From Great Britain Ron Dart playing darts as you have never seen before. From the USA Avner the Eccentric with his one-man Vaudeville show.

In the first of ten programmes Paul Daniels inaugurates his travelling magic show and arrives at Longleat to perform magic fit for a stately home in the presence of the Marquess of Bath, and from Antiques Roadshow, Hilary Kay. He also introduces the remarkable skills of his studio guests. From the USA: Jim Mather, catching arrows out of the air with his bare hand. From Cuba: Doris and Mario with their elegant balancing skills.

Paul Daniels accompanies Anneka Rice to investigate witchcraft and things that go bump in the night in the appropriate settings of Glastonbury Tor and Wookey Hole. He also introduces, from America, his studio guests: The popular ventriloquial comedy team, Willie Tyler and Lester, and playing music like you have never heard before, Artis the Spoonman.

[Johnny Paul / The Bauers / Arthur Lintgen / Sir Georg Solti] This episode opens with the host performing illusions with trainers and laces. He then introduces the first of tonight's guest acts, The Bauer Family. Their incredible balancing routine on fifty feet high poles has to be performed outside of the BBC television centre. Astonishingly, they use no safety equipment of any kind. Paul returns for an impressive illusion in his 'House Of Cards' segment before bringing on his favourite magician, Johnny Paul. As expected, Mr. Paul delivers admirably, with some superb cup and ball tricks. The next part of the show sees Doctor Arthur Lintgen displaying his unique skill in identifying classical music pieces simply by examining a record groove! Sir Georg and Lady Solti look on with delighted bemusement. Paul finishes the show at Merlin's Cave, Cornwall, for some entertainment based around the King Arthur legend.

[Penelope Keith / The Olympiads / Paul Potassy] Paul starts off the show with a simple but jovial trick before providing more amusement in his weekly 'House Of Cards' section. Germany's The Olympiads are then introduced, and they display their astounding feats of strength and balance. Paul greets British favourite, Penelope Keith, who takes part in an illusion aided by the host's son, Paul Jnr. The third guest tonight is the great Hungarian magician, Paul Potassy, who puts his own unique spin on silks and razor blade magic. At the Royal Crescent Of Bath, Paul puts on an astonishing end to the programme as he appears to teleport Debbie McGee from a trunk on the ground to a hot air balloon.

[Ian McCaskill / Airjazz / Frank Rains - Talk Simultaneously] Paul's opening trick is a no frills affair but it's enjoyable nonetheless seeing a face from the past, weatherman Ian McCaskill. The first guest act is the American trio, Airjazz, who combine unicycling and juggling. The host performs a super trick in this week's 'House Of Cards' slot, with his usual witty banter before telling a story based around the crockery 'Willow' pattern, with a nice little illusion, The second guest, Frank Rains, is then introduced. His amusing act involves a unique skill of speaking simultaneously with others. The host then rounds off the show with an impressive trick where he makes The Lovely Debbie McGee disappear.

[Sinekos Family - Acrobats / Ricky Jay - Card Throwing] With the help of audience members, Paul amuses with a couple of close up magic tricks. The first guest act is then introduced - the very enthusiastic, Czech Sinekos family. Displaying superb balancing skills, they even manage to involve the host in their act! Paul temporarily severs an audience member's arm for his next illusion, before former Guinness World Record holder, Ricky Jay takes to the stage. His card throwing skills are truly remarkable and he also adds great comedy to his routine. The final illusion is left to the host, where he recreates the legendary Indian rope trick in the open air.

Paul Daniels, in the company of his special guests Dame Vera Lynn and Wynford Vaughan Thomas, travels to the Cabinet War Rooms in Whitehall to present a special magic tribute to Sir Winston Churchill, and introduces his remarkable studio guests from the USA: Danuta, the spider goddess with her thrilling aerial display and Meir Yedid bringing a new meaning to 'sleight-of-hand'. Special guest appearance by ballet star Graham Fletcher.

Somewhere in England, Paul Daniels has hidden the most valuable, most special object imaginable. Will the studio audience, aided by special guest star Anneka Rice, be able to find it by the end of this evening's programme ?
