Still loving every moment.
Adore how they also decided to build it up between Beth and Townes rather than rushing into it too quickly. Also liking the mother/daughter dynamics here. In the beginning I was a bit worried Alma would only support her because she saw some personal gain, but she's actually trying to understand some of Beth's world, aka chess. Albeit poorly. Neither of them ever really had much of the other's role in their life, I believe they're really putting in an effort.
Great moment with the "Now you know what it feels like to lose." She needed that.
Really enjoying the cinematography and direction on this show. It isn't afraid to let quiet moments sit and it's so effective.
7.5/10 - It's getting better every episode.
"Beth Harmon."
"Shit."
That was priceless xD
But yeah, I also wouldn't like to loose many Elo rating points to a low Elo player :D (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system)
I love Alma and Beth’s dynamic! They are a cute small family!! Alma is supporting of her even tho she doesn’t understand much of chess (she reminded me of my mom always supporting me through out my career even tho she didn’t understand or knew about the subject) and together they are living their best lives with a little of luxury!! The only thing that’s a red flag is Alma letting her drink, but since Alma doesn’t know about her addiction pill probably she thinks it’s just a sip of vodka or just one beer.
«And it was the board I noticed first. It’s an entire world of just 64 squares. I feel... safe in it. I can control it, I can dominate it. And It’s predictable. So, if I get hurt, I only have myself to blame».

«...fu la scacchiera a colpirmi. Esiste tutto un mondo in quelle 64 case. Mi sento... sicura lì. Posso controllarlo, posso dominarlo. Ed è prevedibile. So che se mi faccio male è solo colpa mia».
Just keeps getting better and better. Really loving the mother/daughter bonding on this one! Favourite new series!
This show is so beautifully shot (and Anya Taylor-Joy's skin immaculate). The closeups on this show are fantastic, as is the period architecture and set dressing. Oh yeah, the characters and their relationships, the writing, and acting are also great. But really, it's such a gorgeous show, and it really makes the case for 4K and HDR. I love rooting for Beth and watching her experience the twists and turns. Oh, and bisexual loverboy?! Ridiculously attractive. Just obscene, really.
This is what I've been waiting for, Beth's loss.
Another intense episode and new changes in Beth's life. She starts to build a stronger relationship with her adoptive mother, who gets more supportive of Beth and it seems that she really cares about her and is not in it for the money. Beth has a long winning streak and becomes a sort of a celebrity with interviews to the local and national press, though she stays rather distanced and independent. She is even invited to the girls' club which rejected her earlier, though she does not feel at home among girls her age and quickly escapes the party with a stolen alcohol bottle. Alcohol starts to play important role in her life, as she is introduced to it by her adoptive mother who seems to be an addict. The most important thing about this episode is that Beth loses for the first time, to Benny Watts who criticized her play the day before the game, and the failure leaves Beth shattered, as her whole identity lies in her being a good chess player, and now she feels worthless having lost that. She does not even want to speak to Townes to whom she reconnected during the tournament. The event makes her a bit closer to her adoptive mother, though, as Beth opens up to her about the fateful game and speaks about her feelings. This final game with Benny was very emotional as I was hoping to the last moment that maybe she would be able to come up with some idea of how to beat him, so it was a bit surprising that she lost after all ( I don't play chess and I haven't read the novel the show is based on, so I had no idea where it was going).
I can't take Benny seriously in that getup. Hopefully he becomes less of a caricature in future episodes.

That one travelling shot when Beth arrives at Las Vegas was incredible! I'm so impressed with the cinematography!
