Great episode!!! The games were amazing and that ending... I figured it would happen eventually but not here and now! In the short time Alma was Beth’s mother, they really bonded and she left a lasting impression on her. I really liked the relationship between them, so sad it was cut abruptly

Sad ending I'm a bit dissapointed that Alma never
talked with Beth about her daughter, she was only mentioned once.

Oh no, Alma! that was so heartbreaking!!!
Alma wasn’t the “perfect” mom and they didn’t have a traditional mother-daughter relationship, but she loved her and supported her so much!!! I loved when Beth used to tell her all about a game and even tho Alma didn’t understand it she would always listen and care.

Absolutely insane. The way they characterize the Russian as some cold robot-like player who shows no personal thought for his moves is amazing. And of course Beth’s mom dying in Mexico City was super unexpected . I cannot wait to see where Beth goes from here.

00:02:45 — That has got to be the most beautifully lit and shot phallice in all of the art of cinema. And it's still used to comedic effect!

So many great one-off shots in this episode. I think the director's intention was to have Anya in as many picturesque shots and settings as possible, and Iove it.

Oh, Alice! Gut punch us right at the end.

I had a feeling we would lose Alma at some point but was expecting a long drawn out illness not a sudden passing like that. Really brutal and can see how it might make Beth lean even more into bad habits and living purely for the game.
Also fuck Austin.

A very sad turn of events for Beth as she loses a chess match to Borgov (whom she had always feared facing in the game) and her adoptive mother at the same day. They build a good team and the adoptive mother really supported Beth in her chess career, as e.g. earlier in the episode when she encourages Beth to take some rest before the matches instead of constant studying and preparing. Beth will surely miss her mother's emotional support and since it is the second time when she lost a close one, it is all the more crushing, particularly as it happened on the same day as the fateful match with Borgov. The adoptive father, who abandoned the family soon after Beth was adopted, does not care for her at all and leaves her to her own devices. Beth is again alone in the world as at the beginning of the story.
