What happens after Beth lost her mother: - Harry Beltik calls her and offers her some chess practice, brings a lot of chess books and they train together and discuss games. Soon he moves into Beth's house and they have a strange relationship as Beltik is sort of shy and awkward around Beth, though the eventually become lovers; however as he discovers that he cannot teach Beth much and the relationship between them is not going anywhere, he moves out, leaving Beth with an apt diagnosis of her condition, as he states she is too obsessed with chess to the point of madness. I am not sure what was Beltik's plan, was he intending only to teach Beth and help her or was he hoping that they would become a couple? His remark about fixing his teeth suggests the latter. - she meets her high scholl colleague from the Apple Pi group, and she is already married with a small child, which is in stark contrast to Beth's solitary life. - Beth continues to shop in the same place where she stole her first chess magazine and it turns out the shopkeeper knew about her magazine theft all along ;) - On the tournament, Beth finally beats Benny Watts, though she loses money to him the night before, playing speed chess. I am not sure how this differs from "real" chess apart from being much faster as the name suggests. Benny offers her tuition before her match against Borgov, and at first Beth is reluctant to accept, but eventually agrees. He also points out that she has problems with addictions, but Beth again tries to brush that comment away. I wonder how their co-operation is going to work.
