The Rook 2019

If you've read the book(s), don't approach this show expecting a direct adaptation. A few characters have been redefined, but moreover it's missing the wry humor that makes the source material so endearing. Having said that, it still beats most "average people with powers" shows. You'll only find it boring if you don't like the pacing of British television.

If you did enjoy this, I recommend Syfy's sadly truncated Alphas and neatly-concluded Haven.

It's an intriguing premise. But I feel like it could've been a whole lot better. And I don't mean that in a bad way. It was still good and enjoyable but should've been better. The main storyline was underwhelming, honestly. Myfanwy wakes up with no memory and finds out she's apart of the Checquy, a secret agency that deals with people with unique abilities yet that's barely focused on, what they exist to do. Myfanwy is the main character and attempting to find out what happened to her is the whole point of the show, I get it. I just think what the Checquy do should've been shown and utilized more instead of being on the back burner which shouldn't have been the case.

The Rook is kinda cool, but it's greatest power, and Eva's powers, is to put us to sleep, and bore us to death.

This was a very British spin on people with powers. Beyond the base supernatural principal, it really plays like a spy or political mystery. The casting is excellent as are the performances. The working out of who is wearing white hats or black hats is all part of the puzzle and perspectives shift throughout. I give this series a 7 (a good mystery) out of 10. [SciFi Mystery]

Pretty good series, too bad it ended after just the first season. There is a proper ending, so dont discard it just coz it got cancelled. Starz has been good at cancelling quality series and let utter crap continue on; this is one of those. Of course its another series about people with special abilities, but this is not Marvel or DC - give it a chance.

It's a little bit X-men and a little bit Jason Bourne. Overall it was quite good. Keeps you guessing till the end what is happening and why. Sadly it was also cancelled and we'll never get to see where this show could have gone.

I'd say this about covers 10% of the book, and only barely. Pacing is pretty flat for the first 2-3 episodes, followed by a complete departure from the book and subsequent love triangle (quadrangle?), illegal slave auctions, and a some EVA's on the run, oh and Olivia Munn that just kind of plays Olivia Munn as a drunk obsessed with a dude she met at work. Ehhhh.

Ah what a shame, this had promise, but failed to deliver.

It wasn’t awful, and I watched the whole season intrigued to where it would lead. But, it didn’t go far.

It was a kind of crime and espionage show, with a hint of sci-fi. I enjoyed most of the characters and their abilities, but it hardly touched on the subject.

It just lacked something unfortunately.

If there’s a season 2, I won’t watch it.

It’s still ok to watch, just don’t expect anything to wow you.

I’m disappointed for the actors in honesty, 99% of them played their parts well, considering the lack of anything particularly going on.

I didn’t enjoy the lead actress portrayal of the character, she came across a bit lame and boring. Some of the other characters parts were weak too, but the actors seemed to play their parts with far more strength. Maybe, it’s how she was directed to play the character, but she did bore me.

Again, it’s a shame, I think it could have been a good show :(

Wow that was incredible waste of 8 hours. Don’t bother with this show. Looks like it’s cancelled after 1 season. They spent 6 episodes building the story then ended it. So dumb. Save yourself the 8 hours. If you really want to invest time, read the book. A lot of reviews are saying the book is much better.

Overall boring most of the time. Could have been a lot better.

The show was okay, but the end felt a bit rushed. All the mystery created by Myfanwy's amnesia was simply solved by turning episode seven into a flashback episode. That was sloppy writing. I don't know if the show was supposed to have more episodes and that was their way to take a shortcut.

Still a lot of nice plot ideas I wished they took the time to explore in detail. Could have been a start for a great longer running show.
