Funny episode with a good plot but it's indeed a bit all over the place. Also it seems like there were more 3D sorta effects, like we would see later in the movie (and I guess later seasons but never got that far).

Weak even on a post-classic Simpsons scale. You have three acts that have almost nothing to do with one another (Duff World Record Attempt, Marge vs. Sugar, and Angry Sugar-free Springfield respectively), more on-the-nose and overexplained humor than you can shake a stick at, and Homer at in that obnoxious characterization that removed all humanity from the character. Somewhere buried in the crap is an interesting idea about exploring the unseen but omnipresent role sugar plays in our lives, but it's a lost in a sea of cartoony sequences and deus ex machina plot developments. Ben Stiller phones in an entirely wasted guest appearance as the sugar company CEO, and the involvement of Apu, Mr. Burns, and for some reason Count Chocula doesn't liven the proceedings either. As "Marge takes up a cause" episodes go, this one pales in comparison to episodes like "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge" that have the same basic beats, but much better comedy, commentary, and character.

(Though I will admit, I did get a kick out of the running gag of Homer's workshopped "Erin Brockovich" puns.)

Kinda scary that this still applies today - over 30 years later - but as an episode it's kinda mid.

A couple of funny jokes, but it mostly fails at delivering its message that you should cut back on sugar to be healthier (especially if you like in america, where it's injected into everything imaginable).
