A great Icelandic police procedural series that highlighted the dilapidated individuals in an institution that is supposed to provide protection and justice to victims of crime.
I was sure you guys would be more and more attached to this series because each episode was getting more mysterious. However, when the series had two episodes remaining, the series became predictable.
A solid, well acted Nordic Noir mystery. It would appear to be a miniseries since the title refers to the specific case (which is all but resolved by the end - Petur is presumed dead but you never know, I guess), which is a shame because the dynamic between Kata and Arnar by the end (certainly with what they went through in the final) felt like a good springboard for further investigations together. I also feel like Arnar's storyline with his sister was left somewhat unresolved; will she leave her controlling husband? There was also never a clear answer as to Arnar's alienation but reading between the lines, I am guessing his family belonged to a homophobic religious sect and so once Arnar came out he was basically rejected.
I'd be pleased to see it come back with a whole new mystery but they'd need to improve the quality and intrigue/novelty of the case for it to have legs in the long term.
I have a few things to say about this series.
1) It was definitely enjoyable - the storyline was old but good and completely watchable
and now for something completely different (a few annoyances for me - but maybe not for you)
2) Either the dialogue was poorly translated from Icelandic to English or the dialogue itself was just bad - I'm guessing it was mostly the translation (American phrasing and idioms were just bad)
3) It felt like the American/English voice actors kept putting word emphasis in the weirdest places
4) The main character Kata is a horrible detective and maybe even not a very smart human being. Her deductions and decision making were just bad most of the time. As a detective, her character should have been fired long ago. On the other hand this might have simply been the most realistic portrayal of a real live human being doing her job as a detective.
Don't jump down my throat for items 2 thru 4 as I'm probably just in a bad enough mood today to feel the need to mention my annoyances with this show.
Aside from that, I'll most likely watch season 2 if it is made.
