The X-Files: Season 3

3x23 Wetwired

Season 3 started off incredibly strong for me but slowly lost its way ever so slightly. "Wetwired" represents a revival of everything I loved about the season. The combination of mythology elements with Monster-of-the-Week is done in a seamless fashion and not only does it push the mythology forward, it enhances the MoTW itself. The presence of both X and Cigarette Smoking Man are pivotal moments in the episode that never feel out of context within the confines of the story told here . It is a tale of paranoia, deception and manipulation (core themes of the show) and this episode pulls it off beautifully. It's funny, intense, dramatic and an absolute blast from start to finish.

A number of silly moments with a side of not following up on events transpiring during the episode, but it's still interesting. All the episodes that end with no conclusion, which is almost all of them, result in a cumulative feeling of fatigue and dissatisfaction. Intentional vagueness doesn't equate to intrigue. With hindsight, it seems that there was no plan or answers. Wing it for the best at the moment appears to be the modus operandi (for this and so many other projects). This typed, I did enjoy the twist at the close.

Was it some type of a series inside joke to ensure they only include clips of "dead bodies" that are clearly alive?

Scully is affected by television broadcasts and threatens to shoot Mulder. Who is it that's manipulating the cable television signals? I'm not certain but you can bet that the Cigarette-Smoking Man is in on the conspiracy somehow.

Secondary characters in this episode: CSM, X, Lone Gunmen

Pretty good episode. The fears of manipulating messages hidden in TV broadcast was executed nicely. And the last scene hehe.. This is getting interesting.
