Brilliant.. Absolutely brilliant episode of Cancer Man
And that’s why the Bills never won the Super Bowl!
"Cigarette?"
"No, thank you, sir. I never touch them."
The showrunners missed a grand opportunity to tap Bill Murray to portray the younger version of the Cigarette Smoking Man. What a shame.
"Communism is, without a doubt, the most heinous personification of evil mankind has ever confronted." This episode is a regular laugh riot. Oh, boy howdy.
This assignment, should you choose to accept it... Wow, really? You went there? What a rascal. You sure did. They done did Forrest Gumped the The X-Files. Yee-haw! Giddy up, pardner! We done got roped into a ro-de-o!
"I can kill you whenever I want... but not today."
Oopsie! The much later acceptance letter refers to the title of Take A Chance, CSM's original story, not Second Chance. Hmm. Sounds like a conspiracy! Well, they did change the ending.
I wonder what the point of this episode was, if there was one. What percentage of showrunners have no idea what's happening?
I feel conflicted about this episode. On one paw, it seems like a filler episode to allow the main actors to go on a vacation. It also seems like something of a tasteless retconning of tragic events in service of a filler episode. On the other paw, it may shed light on what's become the most mysterious character in The X-Files. May, as the narrator of sorts may be unreliable. On the third paw and descending to the 39th step, shedding too much light on shadow oft exposes foibles. We don't know Jack.
It just comes across as sad. S. A. D.
Now this is the kind of episode I love. CSM always fascinated me, learning more about his past is fantastic.
One of the best episodes! Learn about cancer man! Definitely on my top 10 of this series!
Solid cancer man origin story.
I didn't remember much about this episode, and now I'm doing a rewatch...
WTF was that? And how can this be so highly regarded?
In this tale, we find out that the Cigarette-Smoking Man was the assassin of JFK, MLK, a co-conspirator in the murder of the first captured alien, and other assorted bad things. It's preposterous and I don't know what it does to add any intensity to the X-Files "conspiracy", but it is pretty entertaining. Scully and Mulder only appear in voice.
Secondary characters in this episode: CSM, Deep Throat, Lone Gunmen
Probaby one of my favourite episodes. I love retrospective stories.
