Oh my garsh. Almost from the start, the dumbness lulled and then slapped me, awakening me from the state in which I had been transfixed. How? Why? Is it possible for writers to be this bad? For content to be executed in this embarrassing a manner? This episode exists. What does it mean? Aliens. The stupidification of the world continues! There's no hope.
Aside: The black oil eye effect, which in prior episode looked interesting, appears to be done differently here to significantly* less effect (pun intended).

After an intense opening, this episode continues on a wild pace. Mulder is captured and placed in a prison near Tunguska in Siberian Russia where workers are forced to dig up alien rocks that contain black oil worms. The workers are also experimented on, regularly dosed with black oil. It's an intense cliffhanger with Mulder (and others) pinned down on tables with chicken wire as the black oil is drained out onto his face.
