Ironically this episode has been written by a Cigarette Smoking man himself. Good job!
While somewhat entertaining, this episode fell flat because it doesn't matter. It explained nothing and added nothing. The episode was a whole bunch of nothing. As I'm revisiting this series from a different and more experienced perspective, I find it baffling that the show became as popular as it did. I think there's a conspiracy behind that.
This typed, I appreciate that The Smoking Man wrote the episode. Perhaps he should've been allowed to craft all of the mythos. This is better written than prior entries. It has nice pacing and a noir feel... and it's all about a McGuffin. If I wasn't so soured on the mythos, I would've enjoyed this more.
I increased the rating for this episode when considering it a standalone, instead of as part of a larger story.
Cigarette Smoking Man promises Scully that he has the cure for cancer, check that, all human disease, which he will reveal to her if she helps him. CSM is somehow very charming and Scully seems really vulnerable as she falls for his deception.
Secondary characters in this episode: Cigarette Smoking Man
Scully is so fkn stupid she just sucks the life out of the show
Amazing episode!! So much cool stuff: all the main characters in the game going hard! full on conspiracy stuff, with perfect suspenseful atmosphere (no wonder they even allowed themselves to rip off Cape Fear’s score! ;). This is what the best of The X-Files is all about, baby. XD
This one's more of a filler to me, just to fill the void for anyone curious about the relation between Smoking Man and Skully, in which is only professional

Clever wordplay in the title, "en ami" means "as a friend" in French, but reads as "enemy" in English.
