In this first episode, the team get straight to work. If they are to save lives, every second is vital for the trauma doctors in their search for clues. For a motor cyclist whose foot is mangled in a car accident, the team have to check every part of his body and the wreckage for clues to other injuries so that they can make the correct diagnosis. London’s Air Ambulance doctors race to stabilize a 19-year-old woman after she is hit by a van, and the team’s investigation reveals a potential spine injury with grave consequences. Weak, nauseous and pale, an elderly woman’s confusion makes the hunt for clues to her illness difficult. After a series of tests, the team finally make an unexpected diagnosis. After a 45-year-old cyclist with a head injury is rushed in by helicopter, the patient’s memory loss provides the team with a vital clue to his condition.

This week, the team carefully manoeuvre a 23-year-old man, who has fallen three storeys, out of a tight space and rush him to hospital. Internal bleeding could prove fatal and a damaged spine may leave him paralysed for life. The air ambulance team also races to stabilise an elderly man who has been hit by a skip lorry. His injuries are so serious that the accident may become the subject of a criminal investigation. Elsewhere, a young woman with a family history of aneurysms is experiencing dizziness. This could have potentially fatal consequences, but a series of diagnostic tests only deepens the mystery. Finally, paramedics race to King’s Cross railway station to revive a man suffering from a cardiac arrest, in the knowledge that every minute of their journey counts.

Prepared for multiple casualties, the medics attend a crash involving several vehicles. One driver is suspiciously unconscious, although his body shows no signs of trauma. Elsewhere, a pedestrian is struck by a car and the trauma team perform a series of tests to establish the cause of his amnesia. Response time is always critical for the trauma staff – never more so than when paramedics rush to a reported shooting incident. This time, however, it turns out to be a hoax. Also this week, a hospital transport worker eventually regains consciousness, but the cause of his symptoms remains a mystery. Finally, when a man collapses in the street, the staff of the Physician Response Unit look for any clues to his condition. It could be anything from a pulled muscle to a full-blown heart attack, and prompt diagnosis will be crucial.
