A French village and its inhabitants go through the ups and (mainly) downs of the occupation by the German army from 1940 to 1945. The village doctor is assigned as mayor, and confronted with the challenges, dilemmas, and contradictory demands and situations. At the same time, there is a lot of personal interactions with a number of interesting characters.
Raymond helps his brother-in-law
Antoine to escape. In hiding, Antoine
meets Claude, a drama college student
who's also on the run. Chassagne,
Villeneuve's new mayor and an
unashamed collaborator, is wounded in
an attack. Suzanne's husband, whom she
hasn't seen for 3 years, escapes from the
Antoine and Claude meet other young
people hiding in the forest. But how will
they survive the cold in the mountains
without any food? The Communists, led
by Suzanne and Marcel, ambush a
German truck, but the operation goes
wrong. Marguerite, the new singing
teacher, lies about her husband..
Claude, Antoine and their comrades
discuss joining the Resistance. Despite
the danger, Daniel, now in Moissey with
Sarah, Gustave and Tequiero, decides to
shelter Ezechiel, wounded in the shoulder
from firing on Chassagne. Humiliated by
Heinrich, Chassagne swears revenge..
Life in hiding is increasingly difficult.
Antoine tries to rally the troops, but morale
is low. Unsettled by Heinrich's pain,
Hortense takes a big risk to find him
morphine. Marguerite asks Beriot to help
her join the Resistance..
Marcel is stopped during a routine control.
In Moissey, the Milice arrest Sarah and
Ezechiel. Gustave and Tequiero manage
to hide in a cupboard and Daniel was out.
During an interrogation, Josephine
throws herself out of the window to protect
her brother Antoine..
Raymond is depressed after Josephine's
death, and Antoine can't accept the idea
of losing his sister. Daniel, still in hiding,
makes plans to escape...
Plans are being made to help Marcel, Raoul and Anselme to escape. When he
discovers Hortense has been lying,
Heinrich throws her out. She takes refuge
with Daniel in their old house, where she
finds Gustave and Tequiero, starving and
abandoned. Jean loses his job as chief of
Antoine and Raymond manage to free the
prisoners. They all go into hiding except
Marcel who didn't manage to escape.
Marguerite falls out with Lucienne when
she discovers Lucienne's secret. Daniel
gets permission to leave the hideout to try
and free his brother...
Arrested and tortured by the Milice,
Daniel is then imprisoned with Marcel.
Antoine and Marie rehearse the play
they'll perform on November 11th, but
when Antoine finds out about Marie's
affair with Raymond, he decides to
change the plans and organise a
Resistance march in Villeneuve..
11th November 1943. The Resistance
fighters wait for the signal to march.
Chassagne senses that something is
going on and tries to warn the police and
the Germans. When the Resistance
fighters eventually manage to surround
Villeneuve, a feeling of liberation infects
the whole town..
There is great excitement in the hideout
after the march, but reprisals are swift to
follow in Villeneuve, and there are
numerous arrests. Heinrich takes the
opportunity to take revenge on
Chassagne who is arrested. Beriot, back
from Lyon, learns all about it from
Marguerite and Lucienne...
Interrogated by Marchetti, Marguerite
reveals the hideout to protect Lucienne.
Antoine and his men have to flee.
Marchetti wants to act swiftly, but the sub-
prefect prefers to let the Germans deal
