[5.6/10] While it’s pleasant enough to have the voice the Brave and the Bold version of Batman around, this one didn’t do much for me. In fact, I think I mildly chuckled once through the whole thing, and that was at some cheap semen jokes, so, you know.
But I don’t know. I’m absolutely not against shows about terrible people, but sometimes I wonder why I watch these severe assholes. The jerks on Arrested Development are cartoony enough with enough of Michael as a straight man that it hits funnier notes. The awful people on IASIP are too outlandish to take seriously and small time enough that it works. But this, I have to say, is almost too real in how awful everyone is.
Selina meeting with Mattix about not running was kind of cringe-y, but not really ha-ha funny, though Jonah is usually good for some amusement. (His decription of himself as “AAA awesome” was a nice touch.) Selina being ready to fire everyone for Diedrich Bader and then resigning herself to Dan was kind of an odd direction to go. Amy campaigning for Campaign Manager and then half-assing the being nice to people was funnier as a concept than in action. And there was something almost too mean-spirited about everyone making fun of Mike having to do sperm donations for IVF with his wife. Gary soldiering through his soldier issues pathetically was kind of sweet and sad in the way his character normally is.
Again, I just don’t know. How long can you keep watching a show where you keep hoping everyone gets some kind of karmic comeuppance for being such jerks? I have no connection to these characters beyond Gary and Mike and, god help me, a little bit Jonah. There’s so few redeeming qualities for anyone on this show, and while that is very bold in its way, it makes it hard to want to follow their continuing adventures.
