[8.1/10] I really enjoy Minna, the former Swedish Prime Minister, because she has this deadpan honesty that makes her the perfect foil to Selina. The way she inadvertently reveals Selina’s feelings on gun control and unintentionally makes her do the jobs announcement is great. Just her presence and reaction to all the craziness from the Veep and her entourage are the best satire of the ridiculous that goes on.
The bit with Selina sleeping with her personal trainer, Ray (Christopher Meloni!) is a little odd, but I like the idea that it’s Dan’s way of keeping her from sleeping with her ex-husband, which always causes problems. And it creates some funny moments with the rest of the group finding out.
Caroline has also slowly but surely become a ringer for the show. Her punching the protestor who tries to assault her mom, regretting it because she abhors violence, becoming the inadvertent poster child for the gun lobby and red staters everywhere, and hating how Dan’s using her to appeal to voters because of that is all really strong stuff.
Otherwise, there’s just some good scattered bits, like Jonah’s doublecross with Mike, Gary’s pseudo-crush on Ray, and Ben’s caustic wit to keep up the humor. Oddly enough, this feels like an Amy episode to some degree, with her not really getting many great lines, but you feel for her as she’s been passed over for Dan and realizing that (oh god) Selina is the closest thing she has to a best friend.
Overall, it’s a much tighter, funnier, and denser half hour of TV than some of the other eps this season. A real winner.
