Vikings: Season 5

5x20 Ragnarok

For all its faults in the last episodes/seasons Vikings still knows how to perfectly film a huge battle.

Great Ending to A Weak Season! this episode reminds us of the great days of this series, loved the last scene that was similar to Ragnar's two seasons ago when he was setting with his Sword❤ I hope the final season will be good enough for this Great Series!

So nostalgic. Sad that in order for an episode to be really exciting, Floki's storyline cannot be a part of it…

Another great battle. One thing to be said about Ivar, he's the best strategist there is on this show.

Again a little issue with temporality. How much time passed between the moment Ivar decided to build fortifications and the attack ? The armies were already walking to Kattegat, so that much construction was very fast.
How nice also for Lagertha and co to arrive at the minute the battle is finished...

Still not sure what to make of Freydis, she literally built Ivar. She's the one that turned his inferiority complex into a god complex, that gave him justification for all his madness. So what ? Did she actually believe it ? Or just ignored his insanity until it affected her personally ? Did she really never saw it as a possibility that he might turn against her ? She seemed smarter than that.

And here's Ivar, deserting the battle to kill a woman. How brave. How godly.

No Floki in this final episode. His whole storyline was really useless.
As was Magnus.

It was a great conclusion to the season. Bjorn finally has Kattegat, that was a long time coming.

I was so scared for Bjørn during the battle. And when he speaks to them all... I got goosebumps. That sheer despair.

And the sword scene between Lagertha and Bjørn — so emotional.

I suppose it was obvious what would happen to Freydis but I really hoped Ivar would face some judgement. But of course, his story must go on.

“You were between life and death. What did that teach you?”
”The only thing that I have learned is that life is about suffering. There is no escape from it. That’s the truth. What’s important is how we deal with suffering. How we deal with the truth.”

many seasons later, Bjorn is finally king. It is lovely to see the parallel with the first episode. I am not going to deny it.

That final scene had a certain Dexter the Lumberjack vibe.
I wonder if that show still has some historical background or the showrunners are making stuff up as they go. As little historical lore about the real Ivar the Boneless has survived the ages there is nothing in it that describes him as a megalomaniac tyrant with a god complex.
