Before even delving into the show, I had high expectations, both because ABC's done such a decent job of impressing me this fall season (see: the continually-good How to Get Away with Murder, and new hit Quantico) and because the teaser trailer for the series greatly intrigued me. Naturally, I was nervous, because when you have high expectations, it's all too easy to be let down. I must say, though, Wicked City didn't really disappoint. I love the "flashback" atmosphere; different time settings have always been fascinating to me, in the sense that you could experience a time beyond your years, whether in the past or in the future. More than that, I love how dark and edgy this show already is.
With serial murders being the focus, "dark and edgy" is to be expected, of course. But the extent of that darkness, that edginess, is what surprised me, I think. In just the first episode, you witness the sick pleasures of the main characters, but in less of the "glance then look away" fashion that most other shows—that don't have the freedom that premium-channel and Netflix shows do—normally follow. The bondage and roleplay scene comes to mind.
Watching the first episode, I also realized that the show is much more dimensional than I'd originally thought and offers the perspectives and stories of characters I'd assumed, from watching the promo, would only be in the background. And to think, that was just the pilot, probably only a taste and a glimpse of the thrills to come.
ETA: Sad to see the show go. I was genuinely excited to see what the show-runners and actors had in store for the audience, and I would've liked to at least see the remainder of the first season even after its cancellation.
Is this a failed remake of Underbelly ? https://trakt.tv/shows/underbelly
I know it's canceled, but since this was suppose to be a seasonal anthology.
Should i bother watching it (did season 1 have a proper ending) or should i just skip it ?
p.s. please only answer after all episodes have aired :)
All episodes will be shown weekly on TVNZ on demand, Episode 5 was shown Dec 2.
I really enjoyed the first three episodes. Sucks that they cancelled this effective immediately.
