I understand the complaints about Charles character being annoying, but it's pretty much goes in line with the different ways we perceive life at different ages. He's practically a "boomer" here, that's all. A bit clueless and naive, but he did have some challenges and lost trust in life a bit, so he's trying to go for the safe bets and that's understandable. And considering social status difference, Quinn is more suitable for him, if you think about it. And Liza shouldn't be in a relationship where she'd feel inferior after everything she achieved on her own.
So, I think that Liza staying alone could be a great message to end the series with. She has her daughter, she has a partner in work, and they trust each other completely. And she has Maggie. She can totally live unbound - happily, without compromises. Pretty inspiring, I think. Three episodes to go, I'm curious to see how they've wrapped this.
