For our poll to determine the 100 greatest American films, we surveyed 62 film critics from around the world. This time, we received responses from 177 – from every continent except Antarctica. Some are newspaper or magazine reviewers, others write primarily for websites; academics and cinema curators are well-represented too. For the purposes of this poll we have decided that a list of the greatest films of the 21st Century should include the year 2000, even though we recognise that there was no ‘Year Zero’ and that 2001 is mathematically the start of the century. Not only did we all celebrate the turn of the millennium on 31 December 1999, but the year 2000 was a landmark in global cinema, and, in particular, saw the emergence of new classics from Asia like nothing we had ever seen before.

For about as long as there have been movies, there have been special effects. That’s no exaggeration: The medium was only a few years old when people began finding ways to toy with the reality of what the motion-picture camera was capturing, creating tricks from quirks in photographic science. A century later, the technology has drastically evolved, but the function remains the same: to make the audience believe the unbelievable. Not that it’s all about fooling us. Yes, some of the best effects blur the line between reality and fantasy. Others simply show us something so cool—so wild or imaginative or beautiful—that we accept the new reality they create, even when we know it’s all make believe. So what makes a special effect special? Maybe it comes down to the effect.

Summer, of course, is the unofficial special effects season, and to commemorate the winding down of Hollywood’s annual parade of CGI-heavy blockbusters, The A.V. Club has picked the highlights from a whole history of cinematic illusion, from the Méliès “trick films” of the early 20th century to the superhero phenomena of today. Note that this is not a list of the most advanced effects work, because as anyone who’s sat through an X-Men movie can attest, even the most state-of-the-art spectacles can look shockingly lousy. Furthermore, not all once-remarkable effects achievements have retained their luster, which is why some of the biggest box office hits of all time are absent from our rundown. (Sorry Titanic stans.) Consider this, instead, a chronological cataloguing of the movies that still dazzle and amaze and disgust us; whether achieved through purely physical/organic means, through the digital magic available at a mouse click, or through something as simple as a cut, the effects within them hold a monopoly on our imaginations.

This is a list of 300 historical movies listed in chronological order, from prehistoric times to 1901. Many of the dates are approximate.

From the coming of sound to the 1960s, the musical was central to Hollywood production. Exhibiting – often in spectacular fashion – the remarkable resources of the Hollywood studios, musicals came to epitomise the very idea of 'light entertainment'. Films like Top Hat and 42nd Street, Meet Me in St. Louis and On the Town, Singin' in the Rain and Oklahoma!, West Side Story and The Sound of Music were hugely popular, yet were commonly regarded by cultural commentators as trivial and escapist. It was the 1970s before serious study of the Hollywood musical began to change critical attitudes and foster an interest in musical films produced in other cultures. Hollywood musicals have become less common, but the genre persists and both academic interest in and fond nostalgia for the musical shows no signs of abating.

100 Film Musicals provides a stimulating overview of the genre's development, its major themes and the critical debates it has provoked. While centred on the dominant Hollywood tradition, 100 Film Musicals includes films from countries that often tried to emulate the Hollywood style, like Britain and Germany, as well as from very different cultures like India, Egypt and Japan. Jim Hillier and Douglas Pye also discuss post-1960s films from many different sources which adapt and reflect on the conventions of the genre, including recent examples such as Moulin Rouge! and High School Musical, demonstrating that the genre is still very much alive.

From the Short Cuts book Fantasy Cinema: Impossible Worlds on Screen.

quote:
Often dismissed as simple escapist tales of sword and sorcery, fantasy is one of the fundamental impulses in filmmaking, a source of some of the most vivid and memorable films ever made that reaches far beyond the confines of a single genre. As well as some of the major genres, stylistic approaches and exponents of cinematic fantasy - from Georges Méliè̀s, Walt Disney, and Andrei Tarkovsky to contemporary fantasists such as Terry Gilliam and Peter Jackson - this volume focuses on fantasy's social function with case studies including The Thief of Baghdad (1924), Excalibur (1981), the Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-03), and Bruce Almighty (2003). Taking in the popular and the experimental, subversive desires and reactionary dreams, this book is an accessible introduction to one of the vital energies in cinema. The Short Cuts series is a comprehensive list of introductory texts covering the full spectrum of Film Studies, specifically designed for building an individually-styled library for all students and enthusiasts of cinema and popular culture.

Three films are considered lost:
- La cigale et la fourmi (1897)
- La caverne maudite (1898)

100 Documentary Films is the first book to offer concise and authoritative individual critical commentaries on some of the key documentary films - from the Lumière brothers and the beginnings of cinema through to recent films such as Bowling for Columbine and When the Levees Broke - and is global in perspective. Many different types of documentary are discussed, as well as films by major documentary directors, including Robert Flaherty, Humphrey Jennings, Jean Rouch, Dziga Vertov, Errol Morris, Nick Broomfield and Michael Moore. Each entry provides concise critical analysis, while frequent cross reference to other films featured helps to place films in their historical and aesthetic contexts.

Building on and bringing up to date the material presented in the first installment of Directory of World Cinema: Japan, this volume continues the exploration of the enduring classics, cult favorites, and contemporary blockbusters of Japanese cinema with new contributions from leading critics and film scholars. Among the additions to this volume are in-depth treatments of two previously unexplored genres—youth cinema and films depicting lower-class settings—considered alongside discussions of popular narrative forms, including J-Horror, samurai cinema, anime, and the Japanese New Wave.

Accompanying the critical essays in this volume are more than 150 new film reviews, complemented by full-color film stills, and significantly expanded references for further study. From the Golden Age to the film festival favorites of today, Directory of World Cinema: Japan 2 completes this comprehensive treatment of a consistently fascinating national cinema.

The list is based on the contents of the Book, sorted by chapters:

  • Film of the Year
  • Alternative Japan
  • Anime / Animation
  • Chambara / Samurai Cinema
  • Contemporary Blockbusters
  • J-Horror / Japanese Horror
  • Jidai-geki / Period Drama

The 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films list serves as a companion to the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? 1,000 Greatest Films of all time list which, - by its nature - tends to have very few films from the 21st century in it. The 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films list attempts to highlight and honour this century's most critically revered films and act as a sort of 'resting bay' for many great films that are likely to be included in the 1,000 Greatest Films list sooner or later.

Horror is one of the most readily dismissed genres from critics and film buffs, yet is, arguably, the genre with the most avid and steadfast niche following and remains popular with the general public. With horror films aiming to terrify, spook, shock, disturb, repulse, amuse, entertain and more, it's no wonder the genre is so varied, divisive and controversial.

With so many people ignoring or simply not understanding horror, many great films slip under the radar and are relatively unknown to an audience outside of hardcore horror fans. In order to counteract this and bring awareness to the greatness of the genre, this list was created.

Compiled using 2,614 lists taken from various critics/polls/magazines/books/websites/forums/horror fans, They Shoot Zombies, Don't They? is intended to be the ultimate canonical top 1000 horror list. Spanning several decades, countries and sub-genres, and using lists from a wide range of people and publications, the resulting list is quite a diverse spread and representation of the best of horror.

The top 300 best silent era films are based on the votes on the silentera.com website. The list is not limited to features exclusively. True silent films (like City Lights) not made in the default silent cinema timeline (1891-1929) are also accepted. Films receiving votes must still exist somewhere and in some viewable form. We limit the list to films that were produced to be silent films exclusively (synchronized music tracks are acceptable, but part-talkies and talkies that have only survived as silents are out).

The title here should be "The Big Film Noir-ish List" but I leave it as is for easy searching.

Film Noir is not a genre, rather it was a movement. The last true film in that movement was "Touch of Evil" in 1958. This list includes Film Noir, Neo-Noir, Post-Modernist Neo-Noir, and other films that were informed - either in theme or form - by the Film Noir movement.

If your favorite didn't make the list, feel free to comment so I can add them to the list.

Establishing the best anime movies can be tricky. After all, despite now being one of the most ubiquitous cultural properties of the 21st century, anime, thanks to over a century’s worth of the medium’s evolution and reinvention, is especially difficult to define. From the five-minute shorts of Oten Shimokawa in 1917, to the feature-length animations produced during World War II, to the pioneering production cycles of Tezuka in the ’60s and the auteurist innovations of the likes of Miyazaki and many others towards the latter half of the last century, anime has morphed through countless phases. Amateur efforts, nationalist propaganda fodder, niche cultural export turned eventual global phenomenon: Each iteration conforms to the shape of the times in which it was produced. Television expanded the medium during the 1960s, birthing many of the essential genres and subgenres that we know today and forming the impetus for the anime industry’s inextricable relationship to advertising and merchandising from the 1970s onward. The arrival of home video catapulted anime to its commercial and aesthetic apex, fanning outward from island nation of Nippon to the far shores of North America and back, before again being revolutionized by the unprecedented accessibility of the world wide web throughout the ’90s and early aughts. Anime film owes much to the evolving means of production and distribution throughout the late 20th century, the breadth and audacity of the medium’s content widening and contracting along with its running time to cater to the emerging palettes of audiences both new and old, at home and abroad. But where does one begin to tackle the aesthetic and historical precedent that anime film has left on pop culture and global entertainment in the last century?

This list is an attempt to do just that: to create a primer of 100 of the most influential and essential films that Japanese animation has produced, and to offer a thorough aesthetic, technical and historical breakdown of why these film matter. With that aim in mind, Paste is proud to enlist the curatorial talents of Jason DeMarco, on-air creative director of Adult Swim and co-creator of Toonami, whose unique role in anime’s emerging popularity in the West has helped to hone this list. Given the shared evolution between anime film and television and the aforementioned significance of the home video revolution, this list includes not only traditional features but also original video animations made for home video (OVAs) and anthology films— with the stipulation of each entry having at some point premiered in theaters. It is our hope that in creating this list we have created an entry point for both the expert and the layperson to trace the rich history of anime’s legacy on both film and popular culture, and to offer newcomers a comprehensive guide through to learn, rediscover, and explore the fullness that the genre of Japanese animation has to offer now and into the future.

Over 1,000 films are listed in this visually arresting, full-color celebration of the silver screen. Film personalities, including actors, directors, cinematographers, and animators, write about their favorite films from a variety of angles. Martin Scorsese, Nicole Kidman, and Nick Hornby are among those who weigh in. Writers are matched to suitable (or sometimes surprising) themes and genres within the wider subject of how films can alter the course of a life. Movie stills and posters, trivia, and top-ten lists make this a book that can be dipped into or read from cover to cover. Great screen moments — endings, beginnings, kisses, death scenes — are given special spreads. The eclectic approach speaks to fans of big Hollywood blockbusters and factoid-reciting film geeks alike.

Thanks to all who’ve made this a very popular list, in spite of glitches causing dozens of fans to suddenly disappear :(

A big welcome to the land of cinematic wonders!

I’ve aimed for a rounded overview to include not only personal favourites but popular hits and international award winners, animé landmarks, avant-
garde films, the New Wave, erotic “pink films” and the great classics that are still the glory of world cinema.

Much of silent cinema before the 1930s has been lost, its Benshi narrators displaced but good finally to have the landmark film Souls on the Road on Mubi. In the 20s directors were able to learn their trade through prolific practice, aware of and encorporating developments in both the Soviet Union and the West… and then, what a wealth of wonders! Older masters: the unequalled aesthetic refinement of Mizoguchi, the charm of Shimizu, the quiet observational wisdom of Ozu, the tragically curtailed promise of Yamanaka, the balanced restraint of Naruse, the muscular humanism of Kurosawa… Then, a new generation from the late 50s, in full swing in the sexually freer 60s: the idealism of Kobayashi, the political bite of Oshima, the earthy subversion of Imamura, the cool of Suzuki and Masumura. the avant-garde Terayama.. So many to explore: Yoshida, Ichikawa Kon, Teshigahara, Shinoda, Wakamatsu, Kumai, the documentaries of Ogawa and Hara, the stop motion master Kawamoto, the blood soaked Fukasaku.. the rise of animé, with the international success of Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki’s beautiful flights of fancy, the spiky Tsukamoto, the popular appeal of Kitano, the prolific shocker Miike.. up to the present with Koreeda, Naomi Kawase, Sono, Kurosawa Kiyoshi… oh and i almost went without mentioning Samurai and Godzilla.

In response to the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest American movies, film scholar Jonathan Rosenbaum took the AFI to task for what he saw as a product "symptomatic of an increasingly dumbed-down film culture that continues to outflank our shrinking expectations." Of course, any list of this kind (including Sight and Sound’s decennial roster and the Village Voice Film Critic’s Poll from a few years back) is not without its blind spots. Participants are often forced to pick a select group of favorites and make a number of concessions ("Well, if I want Antonioni to make it into the collective top 10, I’d better hedge my bets with L’Avventura instead of my personal favorite Zabriskie Point."). Consequently, underdogs and obscure gems have little chance of being represented on a composite list that’s typically unveiled with little-to-no "justification for any of its titles" (to borrow again from Rosenbaum). Rather than present a list that looks like everyone else’s, Slant Magazine has decided to do something a little different. While you will find many popular classics and critical favorites on our list of 100 Essential Films, our goal was to mix things up a bit. This list should not be construed as a definitive "greatest films" package, but as an alternative compiled by a group of kinky film-lovers wanting to give serious critical thought to neglected, forgotten and misunderstood gems. We aimed for the kind of list where post-Cahiers Orson Welles could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with a pre-pastiche Brian De Palma; where it’s understood that Hitchcock, Dreyer, Ford, and Ozu created masterpieces besides film school staples like Vertigo, The Passion of Joan of Arc, The Searchers, and Tokyo Story; and where the postmodern irony of Douglas Sirk’s Imitation of Life is allowed space next to its modern-day equivalent: Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls (gasp!). Because space was tight, documentaries, shorts and animated films were not eligible. Additionally, we limited directors to no more than one spot on the list.

It seems like the Arrowverse has come to an end. As all the shows have been ended or cancelled. It's been a ride. For me Arrowverse died when Arrow ended. It also died when Flash ended.
Thank You

PS. If you are new. Skip Stargirl and Superman & Lois. They are not really part of this. I would also skip Black Lightning
Arrowverse viewing order:

[The list is more or less uppdated now, but I'm thinking of making separate lists for "Pre-Crisis" and for "Post-Crisis" and keep this one as "Arrowverse" ]

This is the simplified list for easy viewing order for Arrowverse!

  • Includes:
    • Arrow
    • Flash
    • Vixen
    • Supergirl
    • DC's Legends of Tomorrow
    • Freedom Fighters: The Ray
    • Constantine: City of Demons
    • Batwoman
    • Black Lightning

Webisodes (you can find most of these videos at YouTube or at CWtv website):

  • Blood Rush - between Arrow S2E05 and S2E06.
  • Chronicles of Cisco - between Flash S2E17 and S2E18.
  • Superhero Fight Club 1.0 - is a promo for the final episodes of Arrow S3 and Flash S1 (arrives after Flash S1E18)
  • Superhero Fight Club 2.0 - is more or less a promo for Supergirl joining CW. (arrives before Flash season 3)
  • Constantine - watch before Season 1 of Constantine:
    • Modern Mystery: Tales of the Dark Arts - Who is John Constantine?
    • Ravenscar Institute Patient Debrief
  • Stretched Scenes:
    • The Flash - Stretched Scene #1 : Flash S4E06
    • The Flash - Stretched Scene #2 : Flash S4E07
    • The Flash - Stretched Scene #3 : Flash S4E09 (there's also a deleted scene for this episode)

Constantine has a cameo in Arrow S4E05. I do recommend you to watch this series, but there's no must. But he might get back into the Arrowverse one day. (and I also would recommend to watch it in this order: 1, 6, 2-5, 7-13. Episode 6 was shot to air as the second episode of the series)

I have added Supergirl Season 1 before the crossover episode to the list. You can watch it basically whenever you want, as long as you watch it before Flash S2E18 or after Flash S2E18 (I personally prefer to watch it before Flash episode, but both ways work). Also S1E04 and S1E05 were aired ouut of original order. Episode 5 should be viewed before episode 4

Constantine: City of Demons: So it appears that Constantine: City of Demons is not a continuation of the Constantine series and so it is not included in Arrowverse. Instead it's in the same universe as Justice League Dark (so it's in DC Animated Universe). But for now I'm going to leave it in the list, as it still explains things like "Newcastle" and etc. But they may get connected, as Constantine will becomes a regular on DC: Legends next season. So we will wait and see.

Upcoming:

There will be a Arrow spin-off series following Mia (Katherine McNamara) also Canaries Laurel Lance and Dinah Drake will be part of the spin-off.

"ALL-TIME" 100 Movies is a compilation by Time magazine featuring 100 of the best films released between March 3, 1923 (when the first issue of Time was published) and early 2005 (when the list was compiled). The list was compiled by critics Richard Schickel and Richard Corliss and generated significant attention, receiving 7.8 million hits in its first week alone.

AFI's 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time

The very first edition of AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies is a list of the 100 greatest American films of all time.

In 1998, AFI invited more than 1,500 leaders from across the American film community – screenwriters, directors, actors, producers, cinematographers, editors, executives, film historians and critics among them – to choose from a list of 400 nominated films compiled by AFI and select the 100 greatest American movies.

Every year there are a huge number of movies that fly right under the radar of the average movie fan. movies that are great but just not that well known.

There are plenty of movie gems out there and hopefully this list will help you find some.

Feel free to submit new movies in the comments below.

This list contains movies/documentaries and short films. The list was originally created on IMDb. http://goo.gl/gHles

From http://www.timeout.com/london/film/best-horror-films.

"Time Out proudly presents the 100 best horror movies, as chosen by those who write in, direct, star in and celebrate the genre. We polled well over 100 horror enthusiasts – including big names like Roger Corman, Guillermo del Toro, Simon Pegg, Clive Barker and Alice Cooper, and horror legends like Coffin Joe, Kim Newman and Tom Six – and came up with a definitive top 100 list."

UPDATE (2017): The source list has actually been updated last year - 9 movies were replaced by other picks. I'm including the new entries at the bottom of the list (rank 101+), while leaving the ousted entries intact. This preserves the list as it originally was in 2014, but lets you see the new entries too. The new picks are certainly deserving, but they're mostly more mainstream movies that a horror fan will likely have already seen - personally, I think the removed movies were more fun to discover.

Movies removed in 2016:
-The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)
-Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)
-The Black Cat (1934)
-Daughters of Darkness (1971)
-Inferno (1980)
-Threads (1984)
-Cronos (1993)
-I Walked with a Zombie (1943)
-Flesh for Frankenstein (1973)

Movies added in 2016 (highest ranked to lowest):
-Lake Mungo (2008)
-The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
-Aliens (1986)
-Ginger Snaps (2000)
-Session 9 (2001)
-The Unknown (1927)
-Scream (1996)
-It Follows (2014)
-Babadook (2014)

The Werewolf Sub-Genre has always been a rather bland one for us. Aside from a few standout titles being stellar, we've found that most Werewolf flicks tend to underwhelm us. A lot of them just aren't that good. Growing up in a time when An American Werewolf in London and The Howling set the bar on Werewolf movies at a crazy high level probably has a lot to do with it though. They spoiled us.

When done right though, Werewolf movies have an unbridled ferocity about them, and they make us identify with the plight of those doomed to change into bloodthirsty monsters by the light of the moon... or fear the ones who do so simply because they can.

For the first 6 movies in the list:

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Werewolf flick, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For our money, An American Werewolf in London and The Howling are probably the best of them, but then again they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the Werewolf Sub-Genre, so just enjoy them all!

For the remaining:

Below are the rest of our 30 Best Werewolf flicks, and of course, a few Honorable Mentions thrown in for good measure. Keep in mind that no "Best of" list is ever perfect, but merely a solid starting point for anyone looking to watch some great flicks.

The last 6 being "Honorable Mentions".

A FEAST OF FRIGHTFUL FLICKS WAITING TO BE REDISCOVERED

As the leading name in the world of horror, Fangoria magazine has been the source of information for fans of fright flicks for more than twenty years—covering feature films, video games, comic books, collectibles, and all aspects of horror entertainment. Working closely with Fangoria’s experts, including Editor in Chief Anthony Timpone, Adam Lukeman has compiled a must-have guide for casual horror fans and hardcore horror junkies with Fangoria’s 101 Best Horror Films You’ve Never Seen.

103

This idea began, as all great ideas do these days, as a discussion over the Twitter wires. At first the question was this: "What is the best horror film of the last ten years?"

I received dozens of great responses, but was distracted by an entertainingly civil argument with several people over whether or not Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth qualifies as a horror film. (I say it does, which is kind of a spoiler. Let's just say Pan's Labyrinth made my Top 10.) So with the assistance of the Twitter gallery (and the inestimable help of my pal @williambgoss), I offer a completely subjective (yet hopefully intelligent) list.

Someone recently asked us if we could recommend any Haunted House or Supernatural movies along the lines of 1408, The Shining, or Rose Red for them to watch, which got us to thinking that we should just make a list of the 30 or so of the best Haunted House flicks that we've seen.

Then we got to thinking about what qualifies a movie as a "Haunted House" movie? Well, a house that is haunted by a spirit of entity is the main thing, but you could stretch the definition to include plenty of other settings & plots as well; technically, Alien (1979) could be considered a Haunted House movie, at least insofar as its mechanics are concerned. The Evil Dead is technically a Haunted House movie too... but then again, it's really more of a possession flick, right?

We will try to keep this list as “Pure” as possible, but keep in mind that some movies can easily fit into two or more sub-genres, so there will be a certain amount of flexibility about it.

For the first 6 movies in the list:

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Haunted House flick, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For us, Session 9 is the best of them, but they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the Haunted House Sub-Genre.

For the remaining:

Below are the rest of our 30 Best Haunted House flicks, and of course, a few Honorable Mentions thrown in for good measure. Keep in mind that no "Best of" list is ever perfect, but merely a solid starting point for anyone looking to watch some great flicks.

The last 6 being "Honorable Mentions".
