Now, I’ll concede, despite having a decent interest in Skinamarink prior to watching, I was pretty apprehensive within the first ten minutes or so. It’s very experimental in its execution, offering a very jarring experience from a cinematography standpoint as well as aurally. Shots are often focused on the walls, ceilings and floors of the home for half the film or more, while the remaining half are seemingly from the perspective of the children. There are titles and subtitles included as a part of the film itself, further enhancing the unconventional approach it takes while otherwise having the potential to be found-footage.
My point being, I’ve always had a preference for coherent, comprehensive stories and characters that I can follow in the films I watch. I’m not much a fan of artistic and/or experimental works by default, which isn’t to say they’re poor products or I hate them or anything. It just remains my preference. So I had a somewhat abrasive reaction at first, but I was intrigued enough to persevere. And I have to say, it was truly worth it.
Skinamarink is honestly horrifying. That is, if you can get into what the film is offering. I’ve seen an exceptionally mixed reception toward the film, with many echoing my sentiments of aversion to experimental cinema while others praise the film’s atmosphere and execution all around.
I honestly appreciate that the film stems from what stands as modern internet horror, rather than “conventional” Hollywood horror stories that haven’t quite tapped into that market as of yet. Esoteric and cosmic, independent and analog, and ultimately experimental in their own right, viral videos like Kane Pixels’ Backrooms series, or My house walk-through, No Through Road, etc. Skinamarink plays with a tremendous deal of current horror intrigues, analog aesthetics and cerebral voids and loops.
It also very powerfully evokes childhood fears, stoking the inherent Nyctophobia we’ve all experienced at one developmental point or another, as well as offering what I feel to be honest adolescent dialogue to the point of being gut-wrenching, though the script has led to much debate in that regard. Some complain that the behavior of the protagonists comes across as unrealistic, which I personally feel mixed on, but ultimately I wasn’t distracted or bothered by their characteristics.
The story is not a step-by-step open book, which can be a considerable turn-off to potential viewers, and I completely understand and relate with that. Stories are what I want out of cinema, when you boil everything down, and generally if I have to look up the film’s synopsis on Wikipedia after the credits, I tap out. But the sequence of events in Skinamarink can be followed enough through being invested in the imagery and the characters themselves. The imagery and sound design can be pretty offputting and intense, however, screaming unconventionality while being completely fucking unnerving.
The film does have its share of jump-scares, though there are plenty of other tools at play to invoke fear and anxiety in the viewer. I will say though, I’ve always struggled to think of examples of jump-scares being done well, and I think Skinamarink might be the first one to come to mind on that front going forward. But make of that what you will.
In closing, Skinamarink is a tough sell for the common movie fan, and may even be a tough one for horror fanatics like myself. But I think it really just boils down to compatibility; you might like and appreciate what it’s doing, or it’s just not your thing. And either side is completely fine.
It’s not one I’ll need to rewatch any time soon, but I’m definitely glad to have seen it at all, and the film will be remaining in my library.

Some of the best animation I've ever seen, astonishingly, and an absolutely perfect finale to a series that has been in my heart for years.
The soundtrack is fantastic, I'm eager to get my hands on it when finally released, and I really appreciated the script taking itself seriously while also being (for the most part) very tasteful in its humor. I adore how silly the show was as it began and how exceptionally intriguing it was as it ended.

The Venture Bros. is my favorite show. The day I heard it was canceled, I was crushed. The day I heard it was being concluded with a feature film, I swelled with hope, but it was diluted with worry, I'll concede. Far too many shows end unsatisfactorily, and that ends up more or less tainting the whole series. (It's impossible to rewatch Game of Thrones without remembering how it all ends, innit?)
I'll say this: This finale wasn't what I was hoping for. I struggled trying to avoid that sentiment, but that's just what it is.
However, it's not necessarily a disappointment in itself. I know that having to end Venture Bros. this way wasn't what Hammer and McCulloch wanted either, but they had questions they needed to answer and they did what they could to do so.
We ascertain the origins of Hank and Dean's birth, along with the truth of the Monarch's relation to Rusty Venture. But in all honesty, a lot of the plot feels shoehorned in. New characters and events that are related to these mysteries but honestly aren't ultimately all that necessary given how it all concludes, a "villain" that doesn't really matter or go anywhere, whose motivations are sloppy and resolved underwhelmingly, and just fills in to explain a loose end, etc.
On my part, I'd been dreaming of it all ending with Jonas Venture's decapitated head being thawed by the OSI and going rogue, trying to force his way back into an immortalized existence and destroying anyone in his way, hero and villain alike. Cementing him as the ultimate antagonist to the series, as had been otherwise implied as each season progressed. Something to bring Rusty and the Monarch together to stop him and finally push past their traumatic childhoods. I personally feel that that would've been a much more satisfying ending to it all. But c'est la vie.
In spite of a direction I wouldn't have chosen, I can write my own fanfiction about how I would've done it all day, but the series has ended. And I can look at it and feel it's resolved enough, even if I'll always have a handful of loose ends I'll be daydreaming of. And who knows? Maybe down the line, someone somewhere with the means could get the resources to run one more season or something.
In conclusion: Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart is an ending if it has to be. I wanted more, the creators wanted more, but they did a good job regardless.
It will remain in my library warmly.

The monster designs are this film's chief asset, exceptional concepts and pretty excellent execution on that front, and production in a few other places is pretty decent too. But beyond that, the films falls short in pretty much every other way. The script is mediocre and rife with cliches, performances are mixed from okay to awful. Didn't realize it'd be a found-footage film, which makes the score and sound cues all the more egregious. Overall, aside from exceptional designs, Frankenstein's Army just ends up being incredibly amateur. I honestly think with a little better direction, they could have made something much more notable. It will not be remaining in my library. That's my piece.
Honestly, if There are Monsters was just uploaded to YouTube as an independent thing with a few tweaks to editing and dialogue, I think it'd be a helluva lot more praised and well-known given today's climate of horror ARGs and whatnot.
It's definitely amateur, the score is unnecessary and cheap, the editing is very shoddy in some places, and a fair amount of the script is weak in lines and particular characters being unrealistic as hell.
But beyond that, I think there's actually a pretty decent story to be found, and while the effects are pretty standard "Liquify Tool" shots, they're pulled off better than you'd expect. The "scare timing", if there is such a thing, seems pretty adept when it comes to how quickly or slowly these shots and events hit you. I also very much like the little details of "they're not people" activity, I appreciate those aspects being given the attention they deserve without being thrown in your face obnoxiously.
Overall, it's a 6 to me, but it's a neat little treat that's not to be revered necessarily, just appreciated if you can accept its flaws. It will be remaining in my library. That's my piece.
Very impressed. Seems almost predictable at surface value, but twists are, pun unintended, tastefully done. I also found the humor to hit far more often than not, a drier comedy that had me laughing much more than once. The film is beautiful at times as well, complemented strongly by an exceptional score.
