Anatomy of a Fall

Too many kids with short attention spans spouting off nonsense in here to handle. For everyone else, this is a must watch and you already know this.

The Big Hit

You can't handle the truth.

Boiler Room

I've always had a soft spot for this film and it still does not disappoint. There are some great performances here.

Lisa Frankenstein

This feels like a dark comedy plucked from a different era and it works in that respect. A few misses here and there yet comes together nicely in the end.

Raw Deal

This has to be one of my least favorite Arnold films that came out in the 80s. I put this on once in a blue moon to see if my opinion changes and it rarely does.

There are some funny scenes here but the film really falls flat in most parts. The supporting actors offer a great range of interesting interactions and should be familiar faces for most.

The cake scene is most likely the strangest and the most memorable moment of the film.

The Zone of Interest

I'm very sad to see people cannot sit through a film such as this. What is not seen is much more powerful than what is.

Ricochet

With Russell Mulcahy directing and Steven E De Souza writing you know you're in for a treat. Some of the dialogue is out of this world.

Lithgow plays a perfect psycho pursuing Washington after his initial arrest. That opening scene is not what you'd be expecting and sets the tone for the entire film. Some interesting folks show up as supporting cast throughout the film.

Mary Ellen Trainor played reporter Gail Wallens, a character she also played in Die Hard (1988).

This was an interesting ride and somewhat difficult to source for one reason or another.

The Ambulance

Seeing Eric Roberts mullet take on a leading role is the star of the show. A funny mix of thriller and comedy starring a great, diverse cast. Mullet is actually employed at Marvel Comics with Stan Lee making a full appearance here. The acting is over the top and the scenarios are outrageous. James Earl Jones' death scene is something to witness!

The Temp

A b-grade 90s thriller starring Timothy Hutton and Lara Flynn Boyle from Twin Peaks fails to ignite the screen. This temp has higher aspirations and isn't afraid to do anything to move up in this company. You'll keep watching as you don't know what's coming up next. While fun it's not something you'll be coming back to.

Shattered

Ah yes the 1990s era of Hitchcock influenced thrillers were all the rage. This one is quite unplausible but fun nonetheless. Bob Hoskins plays a pet store owning private investigator in a role that stands out for me. There are lots of twists and turns that make it a fun ride filled with thrills and chills. Try not to delve much deeper on this one and turn your reasoning brain off.

Rampage

To watch the 1987 or 1992 cut? The choices in the latter make it a more blunt film with some key character building moments cut out. Regardless, this is the more interesting aspect of the film rather than the film itself. Watching both in order was interesting to experience what Friedkin was thinking at the time.

The Guardian

You'd never know this was directed by William Friedkin once you watch this.

The feeling of b-grade material is all over this one which isn't a bad thing. There are some strange and crazy decisions being made that will stick in your mind after seeing this. Apparently Sam Raimi was initially attached and I could certainly see that connection here.

The last 15 minutes really ramps up considering the rather dull storyline. Not many will be coming back to see this one again.

Spader and Lowe have great chemistry in this. 90's underground LA never looked so interesting.

Mesmerizing film with so much to unpack. This is something that certainly warrants another viewing. Blanchett steals the show of course. I can see the content not working for a mainstream audience but for those who wish more from a film this one delivers.

Less Than Zero

Still a potent look at life in a microcosm of 80's life in LA.

RDJ plays a role that's a little too close to life at this point; cinéma vérité? Perhaps so.

Spader does what he does best by playing a dirtbag. Jami Gertz is an interesting sight in this one providing something different in this trio of friends.

The soundtrack provided by Rick Rubin is an amazing selection for the time and one of the most memorable points of the entire film.

Bret Easton Ellis's work brought to life and I can't complain. Give it a shot.

Blood & Flesh: The Reel Life & Ghastly Death of Al Adamson

Super interesting documentary documenting the work of Al Adamson along with a great slice of the film industry at the time. The last 1/4 of the film becomes very dark with everything surrounding his death. Life is stranger than fiction as they say.

This packs a lot into one film. Action, sabotage, infiltration, ptsd, dog fights and political intrigue to touch on certain aspects. I was entertained but I can see a modern audience passing this one over. Watching the Russian threat from this era is always interesting to see all these years later.

Come True

There is a lot to like about this film but the ending unravels it all. A simple ending cut of 10 seconds would do nicely.

The Night House

This film builds a good amount of amtosphere but ruins it with lame jump scares and a third act that destroys everything that was built up. Rebecca Hall's acting does stand out given the material she has to work with.

Natural Born Killers

You sure don't see them like this anymore. Hyperactive editing done at its best with a strong message in tow. Still holds up and feels really fresh given the glut of medicore film output these days. Tommy Lee Jones is still a favorite of mine in this madhouse of a film.

The Little Things

There are some very interesting moments and themes throughout the film but it becomes undone with strange directorial aspects. I commend the darker choices here in the protagonists that you would rarely see given the actors in this film. Leto plays up his role nicely while Malek feels a bit off in this one. A middle of the road film you don't often see being made these days.

Ferrari

Great performances all around here based on a dark year in the history of Ferrari both professionally and personally. While Driver commands a great interpretation of the aging Ferrari, Cruz shines as his wife. This is one of Michael Mann's better recent films and worth a watch.

Fubar II

You could lump this in as a Christmas film and I'd be fine with this. 8 years later we catch up with the continuing story and it still has lots of laughs among other things.

The Glickenhaus magic is still here and you should be entertained visually.

I do wonder why Walken decided to take this role although it's not uncommon for him in this period of his career.

The Soldier

I can see this being a guilty pleasure for some. The plot is downright ludicrous and that's part of the charm. Glickenhaus delivers on the action and practical effects given the time period. Seeing the Berlin Wall and a stunt that involves it is something you'll never see again.

Keep an eye out for a most unexpected appearance of Klaus Kinski.

Warning

An anthology film that has something to say at certain points.

As usual I came in blind and was pleasantly surprised with a few of the stories. At least this one made you think here and there; this is all one can ask for for this genre of film.

When Evil Lurks

There are a few interesting scenes here but not enough to carry the film. As of this comment Rotten Tomatoes sits at a 97% critics rating and 81% audience score. This is actually more interesting than the film itself.

Fubar

Black humor at its finest. Those that only see the surface are missing the spectacular undertones of a film that you do not see replicated at all in current film. After many years since my initial viewing this still delivers the goods.

Shakedown

You come for the gritty New York setting, car chases, crazy dialogue and even a courtroom drama. I was pleasantly caught off guard with all the varied scenes in this film.

The Artifice Girl

Pleasantly surprised with the presentation of this film. A straight up dialogue driven work incorporating artificial intelligence and ethics. This is a great first effort by the director, I'm interested to see what comes next.
