Halo: 2x08 Halo

Aw, man.. "Leave them wanting more" is fair, but that was borderline cruel. :joy: At least there'll be more sci-fi coming my way next month, but this one and Foundation couldn't get here soon enough.

The build-up of the season was good but I wish we knew more about these mysteries by now.

I generally dislike musicals and this one was no different, but at least it was entertaining here and there, especially seeing Pike showing his hand in front of the crew... And the Klingons in the end!

Another treat of an episode. Robert Wisdom playing yet another duplicitous character brought back memories of Burn Notice. His interactions with Dr. Joseph seemed just ok at first but the ramping up was very good. Now it remains to be seen if there'll be any real drawback.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: 2x07 Those Old Scientists

Having started this journey with Lower Decks and even Prodigy before Discovery and Strange New Worlds, I couldn't be happier with the payoff, and this episode was the cherry on top. I knew exactly what I was getting with Jack Quaid and he didn't disappoint, but to see Tawny as Mariner in the flesh was something I never knew how much I needed.

Everything I Know About Love

I think it hurts it a bit that it focuses so much more on Maggie, but luckily Emma makes the most of the spotlight. It reminds me of Single Drunk Female every now and then, especially when the protagonist makes it a bit too difficult to cheer her on, but we can all manage it.

Very good, funny most of the time, a few good emotive scenes... I'm only unsure if it should have been centered on Tommy as much as it was. Maybe they could have done something closer to Stranger Than Fiction to give us more than just questioninig what is real and make it truly great.

Now that would have been an interesting iteration of Super Sentai/Power Rangers. :joy:

Too bad that the story itself was poor, but the concept might have worked.

(S05E09) I kinda hope deputy Farr gets to do something until the end because so far he only got a bullet. :joy:

oh no

Everything else kinda went about as I expected, though Munch's redemption was one big exception. Roy couldn't simply die, but having him suffer the wrong end of two of the greatest weapons of the system he thought himself immune to (while judging others) was deliciously twisted.

I don't know if I felt invested in as many characters as the previous season but on the other hand maybe having some earnest characters could be a good way to reinvent the show, so even though this season felt very different than those 4, I enjoyed it.

I think I should feel bad for Joe but I really don't, though I felt bad for the puppet versions when Dot was telling the story.

Munch being the unlikely hero of this episode wasn't exactly a surprise after the whole "hand" thing but that moment was great.

I kinda hope deputy Farr gets to do something until the end because so far he only got a bullet. :joy:

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: 1x05 A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers

Finally some Grover time to shine, and he did it brilliatly (though I don't know if he'll crack the case right away). The evolving dynamics between Annabeth and Percy continue to pay off as well, perhaps a little too fast but that's the pacing established from the start.

Too bad we didn't get that much Timothy Omundson but at least Adam Copeland got to have some funny scenes - I think I've only seen those from him back in Haven.

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities: Season 1

Good showing. From all the different styles and types of story presented, I think only 'The Viewing' didn't really grab my attention. 'Lot 36' and 'The Autopsy' stood out but the other ones have merits as well.

It has great concepts but somehow it doesn't develop them as well as it could have been.

The Marshes side story is good enough but I dunno about Hunter because he prevents us from really feeling sorry about the absurdities that they have to endure to showcase how the Campbells aren't even at the bottom. And then there's the couple, which starts off well somehow in a situation where it could have easily come off as Adam taking advantage, but then the twist didn't feel earned so I thought it was too abrupt to have Chloe give in so fast and so completely. That could have worked if this was only satire but I think they really needed us to see a loss for both of them at that point and I didn't feel that way, so the payoff wasn't that good.

Very good overall, way above the commonplace dog story - largely because of the dog's POV actually driving the story forward, and the rest is up to Milo and the references sprinkled in thtoughout. Though a few hiccups leave it somewhere below greatness, namely the subplot with the grandparents right after one of the most overused tropes. At that point only the dog and the child have interesting reactions to offer as the rest is just meant to (successfully, in more ways than one) upset the viewer. The solution to that conflict having to be handed to Denny (since it was built to be unsurmountable) is the cherry on top. At least they finish it well enough not to leave a sour taste and Enzo's story has a nice ending.

I couldn't be happier that S2 is already in the works because it can't get here soon enough - provided it's not used as a tax write-off until then... Almost lost Pantheon like that, with precious few sci-fi being made as it is.

For All Mankind: 4x06 Leningrad

The story developed so well that it made it irrelevant, but it was funny that they needed to make it so no one had considered bringing the asteroid to Earth rather than Mars up until that moment. :joy: But, geez, did it payoff with all the mixed emotions of that scene.

The reference in passing to the strike on the Moon finally came back into play in a great way, and to have Ed of all people being a catalyst when everything was already set to explode was the cherry on top. And now I wonder if Miles will become some sort of mob boss, after all it's technically the prohibition era on Happy Valley and he just kneecapped his predecessor.

Danielle might have had cancer if she had to hold that in for longer. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I'm glad for the Danny resolution, I guess there was no point to him without Karen and his brother... I'm sad for his family though.

For once I have to agree with the Eagle News guy, if discovering new riches on the Moon didn't help poor people on Earth with more opportunities, it's unlikely that this new discovery would do the trick. But then again, I bet he wouldn't agree with the necessary steps to make sure everyone benefits from exploring the asteroid...

Great short season comedy. Good story, strong cast, not a dull episode.

Terminator: Dark Fate

Pretty good action/sci-fi in its own right, and a good showing from the cast. The main thing working against it is the weight of the franchise, and even though they did a good job with the remixes, it's increasingly hard to keep on messing with timelines and get it right.

The Call of the Wild

Great cast, lukewarm story development. They could have done much better. The CGI completely takes me out of the scene sometimes because it draws too much attention.

I really wanted this to be better, if nothing else for Cara Gee and Omar Sy, I always enjoy seeing them.

For All Mankind: 4x02 Have a Nice Sol

Huh, I look forward to see what will come of Kelly and Aleida's project. We haven't seen Dev yet this season, so either that's going to come into play or they'll go to someone else willing to invest.

Miles' storyline seems to give us a POV we haven't really had so far, so that could be interesting. It's funny that I noticed the Tom Parker thing right away but it was only when Ed was giving the BS "we do this for a purpose" speech to Danielle that I realized that they were fully aware of all the problems. That could be a segue to that headline about a workers strike on the Moon.

I wonder what the story in Russia is gonna be, are they skipping over Yeltsin and having hard-liners taking over? Has NATO still expanded and/or the game of spheres of influence still went on to create friction? The story has been very quiet on addressing Africa and the rest of the Americas...

Beacon 23: 1x02 Wreckers

Seeing Lena back in a sci-fi show after so many years was admitedly the main pull for me to start this, but this second episode was quite good in setting up different players for this story.

I wonder if we'll see Katoa, hum, Jaeden back for more episodes. He wasn't my favorite when he appeared on Killjoys but he grew into that role, so I'd like to see if this character has more to it.

:sob: They're all fractured but wholes.

I'm gonna miss this gang, especially the first 2 seasons, that was something really special.

I don't think I've fully processed just how sad Cliff's ending was, with or without comparisons. Rita at least had a sense of outgrowing and overcoming her younger self's problems, but Cliff got to his complete arc with the bittersweet Six Feet Under image of his grandson's future sorta repeating his mistakes and Clara dying a slow death, so yeah, that stings a bit.

The only mention of Dorothy was about the house being empty, that was disappointing. She and Danny deserved at least an update on what they're up to.

Victor, Larry and K had great endings in their own way.

Rouge's ending was the best one. No notes.

Huh, I never thought Roderick would react that way. I guess "Aunt Mad" really is pulling all the strings.

I'm more inclined to think that they killed their boss now, but it's all still up in the air. Roderick's wife would be a good candidate too, as Mad might have grown tired of her interfering, or even in an accident.

Wow, that was bittersweet, but a little more on the sad side. I'm still digesting it but damn, it's great when shows outdo themselves and reach beyond the genre like that. I'm torn with how unfinished some storylines feel but I always thought it was gonna end like that, because there's always something new on the horizon and that's what a real slice of life should be like.

And who knows, maybe this isn't the last we've seen of these horrible and incredibly human characters. :grinning:
