Gran Turismo

Of course a movie about racing follows some kind of formula. Of course everything was very cliche and of course we saw all the beats we expect. The underdog, the mentor, the unsupportive parents, the love story, the road to victory, the setbacks, everything.
But also of course I reacted to all the beats how I was supposed to, so there's that.

From a technical view the movie was quite enjoyable for me: Lots of interestting camera work during the races and also the visualization of the gaming aspects had some nice touches. Maybe a bit too long overall but I guess that's how AAA-movies are made today. Not great, not terrible but definetly one of the better "video game movies".

I don't know the source material but judging by the fact that both the novel and screenplay where written by Otessa Moshfegh, who is also listed as a producer, I guess the movie is pretty much whatever the creative vision was. I liked the first two thirds and also the twist, but the ending just didn't click with me. I also really enjoyed how authentic 60s the movie felt. The looks, the aspect ratio, grain, etc. Great camera work overall.

Echt – Unsere Jugend

Growing up in the late 90s and early 00s you have heard of echt. While being a few years to young to really anticipate the hype at the time it's really interesting to get to see it now. What makes this documentary especially great is the fact that it's not only being narrated (and directed) by echt's singer Kim Frank but it also has A LOT of authentic behind the scenes material, since the band carried a video camera. If you ever listened to "Weinst du?" or "Du trägst keine Liebe in dir" you might wanna watch this.

Modern Family: 11x13 Paris

Again, a really good episode. I think I'll Just have to rewatch the whole thing over and over once I'm done. I do not want this to end.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Seeing it the first time after 15 years really took its toll for me. I still liked the visual style and the songs but most of the characters didn't click with me anymore.

Happy Death Day

A fun groundhog-day-version of the classic slasher. While it didn't keep me on the edge of my seat the whole time it never failed to show new fun ideas to re-live the day and the death.

The Little Mermaid

This could have been a great movie if they cut the length and put that money in visual effects. I really wanted to like it but so many things just looked so cheap :(

Forbidden World

I think the only thing i really liked about this movie were the practical effects. While the nudity could have been visually pleasing it's context (or lack thereof) just made me feel uncomfortable.

Offline: Are You Ready for the Next Level?

What I expected was some cringy gaming-themed coming of age comedy. What I got was a really entertaining piece of film. While in no way on a Hollywood level you can feel that this was made by someone to whom it was important to portrait the aspects of video and role playing games in a way that's relatable and lovable. Of course you have some dorky moments and cliches but in the end I'd really recommend this to anyone who ever had a phase in their youth where the game (really, any game) was more important than the next day at school.

Go watch it on netflix if you can: https://www.netflix.com/de-en/title/80162197

There are only a few movies that disgustingly shock me as deeply as the fascinate me. Der goldene Handschuh is one of them. Bravo.

5 Centimeters per Second

While visually still very impressive I don't like it as much as I liked it 10 years ago. Maybe because anime developed a lot since then, maybe because I developed a lot since then, I don't know. I still like it, but it has definitely lost some of its impact on me over the years.

I think this might be the frist Affleck/Damon movie that just made me realize it is one, when the credits rolled. Appart from that I really liked how they managed to build tension although everyone and their mother know how the story ends. Very high production value, great (sometimes too obvious) soundtrack choices and great acting. Would recommend!

Do the Right Thing

While I can't remember why or when I this movie on my watchlist I'm happy I did so. Starting out as a fun (and we'll filmed!) comedy DTRT subtly transforms into a drama about love and hate and problems that unfortunately are as present as they were 40 years ago. It's also interesting to see Sam Jackson, Giancarlo Esposito, Martin Lawrence and John Turturro in their early days. Highly recommend!

Cocaine Bear

What did I expect of a movie about a bear doing cocaine? Is it fun? Yes. Is it gory? Yes. Could this have been a 30-40 minutes shorter and still be as entertaining? Also yes.
It feels like someone had this (great) idea but sometime during script review noticed the movie wouldn't be long enough for a full feature but would also be way too long for a short film. The cast is doing their best but somehow it just feels... too much of everything. Just how I imagine a mouthful of cocaine.

The Ice Road

While this is not great movie by any means the setting sure is unused enough (for me at least) to be entertaining and not completely foreseeable. I give it a 3 out of 5 - not great, not terrible.

Cruella

More fun to watch than I imagined. I liked the progression of the character, but I loved the presentation of cruella being a fashion rockstar.

A movie that's both morally and visually very pleasing. The revenge on the Nazis is really, really beautifully filmed. Bravo.

Every few years I like to wachh this movie and then forget about it until I spot it again in my collection. And every few years I'm amazed how good it still is. It has action, thrill, and is perfect for when the first snow starts to fall. Great recommendation!

Prince of Darkness

It might be a classic, but it doesn't really work for me. Maybe I'm not enough into supernatural demonic stuff to really appreciate it. Maybe it didn't age too well. Maybe a bit of both.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Season 1

As someone who doesn't actively follows the MCU, I REALLY liked She Hulk. It doesn't take itself too serious, is more down to earth the most super hero storys and delivers a needed chunk of female empowerment. Also, the season finale was genius.

The Forest

The idea is not so Bad, but unfortunately, basically everyone is either stupid, unlikable or has too little screentime to be mentionable. Also a lot of jump scares.

To be fair, that's about what I expected so take it with a grain of salt.

Fear Street: 1666

I don't know why but I really disliked most of the story part that was told in 1666. It might be the time period itself, or all the mysogyny and witch hunting that's going on (which is needed to have a pay off and explain the lore, etc but well). I really liked the second half(?) of the movie though. It's a nice closure to the trilogy and all in all I'm happy how it turned out. Would recommend.

Fear Street: 1994

Imho this is an okay Horror/Mystery/Thriller kind of movie. Not many jump scares which is a good thing but also a lot of build up while still maintaining a solid story on its own. I guess I liked it.

Fear Street: 1978

I really liked the spin that the second part is pretty much a classic slasher movie. I think it's my favorite of the Trilogy.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Is it a great movie? Maybe not. Is it a great sequel? Maybe even notter. But oh boy, did I have fun with this one. With the original Space Jam being the first movie I ever watched in a cinema as a kid I was fully pumped with nostalgia. In no way I expected to SJ2 to be much fun and for the first 20 or so minutes I was kinda stumped. The tech babble was a bit too much and I guess LeBron is not really that much of an actor. But the good thing is: After those first 20 or so minutes he doesn't have to, anymore. I won't spoilt anything because there was a lot that caught me of guard and I absolutely LOVED the assembly of the team.
So I guess if you liked the first movie and you're in the mood for a goofy loony movie, you might want to dust off that old tune squad shirt and move your ass to the cinema.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines

I heard a lot of great things about this movie and it was recommended more than once. When I finally got around to see it I knew why. Even though (or because?) I could only partly relate to Katie and therefore wasn't completely hooked by the story I liked all the little details and creativity sparks that were scattered all over the place. It's a fun and entertaining movie that's never boring or slow and still manages to deliver some important messages. I highly recommend it.

Nobody

When I saw the trailer for this I was pretty hyped, because sometimes I really have craving for some old fashioned fist to the face action. It looked like John Wick but starring Saul Goodman and somehow also Doc Brown!? I was not sure how well it would work since I mostly knew Bob Odenkirk from his roles in Breaking Bad where he seems rather fragile and ....old. Not quite "too old for this shit" but you know.
To my surprise this fear was wiped away pretty quick.
The movie is really fun (although quite graphic at times), had some pretty new ideas and a great pacing. If you want to see good (old) Saul kick some ass, you're in for a treat.
